Summary of the Article
The study postulates that workplace violence is a universal problem that affects many individuals at multiple levels. The authors, Park, Cho, and Hong assert that workplace violence not only has an impact on a person’s quality of life, but also has the potential to affect their emotional as well as physical wellbeing. Every occupation is affected by workplace violence; however, nurses are at a bigger risk especially of non-physical violence. Researchers believe that there is a relationship between violence and work environment. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data collected over a period of two months from nurses at a university hospital in Seoul, South Korea. The 2nd version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire was utilized to examine the potential factors related to violence. The data was computed to establish the number of nurses exposed to one of the five forms of violence over a period of twelve months. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify a commonality among work demands, trust, and justice existing at the workplace. It was established that 71% of the nurses who took part in the study reported previous exposure to at least one of the five forms of violence. The majority reported exposure to verbal abuse as well as sexual harassment. According to the data, most perpetrators of violence are patients followed closely by physicians and patients’ families. Emotional instability potential increased the risk of workplace violence. Researchers established that more attention must be given to address the high workplace violence by building trust and justice, and having the appropriate workload in the workplace. The researchers concluded that nurses exposed to increasing work demands and minimal trust and justice in their work environment are more likely to experience workplace violence. Therefore, reducing workplace violence creates a better work environment and provides the opportunity for better results.
According to the researchers Turk, Fapohunda, and Zoucha, the population of the African immigrants is one of the fastest growing populations in the United States. Nigeria is one of the most popular countries for African immigrants. It is possible that this population may face barriers, making it difficult to maintain healthy diets and activity levels after migrating to the United States. To more knowledge surrounding the African immigrant population, researchers conducted a qualitative visual ethnography study using Photovoice. The 13 participants were asked to describe their health and life experiences using photographs. The participants had to be at least 18years of age, able to read and write, and must have been an immigrant from the Nigeria to the US. Participants were provided with a digital camera and instructed to takes photos of unhealthy eating habits and physical activity that they perceived to be unhealthy over a two-week period. The participants were instructed to take photos of what they thought as healthy eating habits and physical activity. The top four photos were selected and discussed. A semi structured interview guide was used to ask the participants several questions in relation to the photos that were previously selected. Open ended questions were used by the participants to fully express their perceptions. Through data collection, four themes were identified: moderation is healthy, Nigerian lifestyles are healthy, adapting to the American way is unhealthy, and promoting healthy behaviors involves cultural consideration (Turk, Fapohunda & Zoucha, 2015).
The Problem for each article
Workplace violence has become a global problem affecting numerous individuals on multiple levels. Workplace violence not only has an effect on a person’s quality of life, but also impacts their emotional as well as physical wellbeing. All occupations are affected by workplace violence but nurses are at higher risk. Potential risk factors create avenue for workplace violence by various perpetrators (Park, Cho & Hong, 2015).
The health and wellness of African immigrants in the United States has not been examined. Few studies focus on the heath of this population, as well as the possible impact diet and physical activity can have on Nigerian immigrants to the U.S. There is little information available on their perceptions and behaviors involving eating healthy and increased physical activity.
The purpose statement for each article
According to the authors, the purpose of the article is to identify both the prevalence and perpetrators of workplace violence involving nurses. The article seeks to examine the relationship between work demands, truth, and justice within the workplace and workplace violence (Park, Cho & Hong, 2015).
The purpose of the study were to (a) explore the perceptions and practices of Nigerian immigrants regarding healthy eating and physical activity in the United States; (b) assess the influence of cultural beliefs of Nigerian immigrants on eating and physical activity; (c) describe the role that healthcare providers can play in helping to promote healthy eating and physical activity; and (d) evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of using Photovoice to collect data on the perceptions and practices of Nigerian immigrants regarding healthy eating and physical activity” (p. 16).
The hypothesis and/or
Research questions depending on the methodology used in the articles.
There is a relationship between violent occurrences and the work environment; specifically, the existence of trust and justice when such events occur and the demands of the work environment.
Because this is a qualitative study, there is no specified hypothesis. The study addresses the following questions:
What are the perceptions and practice regarding healthy eating habits and physical activity for the Nigerian population? What role do cultural beliefs play in healthy eating and physical activity? What is the role of the healthcare provider in ensuring healthy behaviors regarding eating and physical activity among the Nigerian immigrant population?
The significance of each article to nursing practice.
It is evident in this article that work place violence exists in different forms in almost every aspect of nursing. In order to reduce these patterns, awareness must be raised on workplace violence and possible contributors. The study highlights that apprentice nurses have a higher risk of experiencing violence from their colleagues and shows that it is imperative for professional nurses to get more intentional in eliminating these patterns that undermine the environment of trust and justice (Park, Cho & Hong, 2015).
As professional nurses, it is crucial to understand behavior and health beliefs associated with other cultures. Understanding these cultural behaviors and beliefs allows enhanced communication and education with culturally diverse populations, a vital element in the nursing practice and in enhancing cultural competence. Without having a cultural understanding, it becomes difficult to provide quality patient care. This study revealed that cultural context is an important aspect in promoting healthy behaviors (Turk, Fapohunda & Zoucha, 2015). In order to promote these healthy behaviors, as professional nurse we must take the time to become more culturally aware.
Details supporting whether the study is quantitative or qualitative
Used a structured technique of collecting data; in this case, the questionnaire.
Utilized numeric information for its statistical variables to form conclusive and descriptive analysis.
The authors assert that the research is a “Qualitative visual ethnography using Photovoice.” (p. 16).
In this article, photos were selected and the participants provided descriptions about their experiences regarding the photos. Participants provided descriptions through a series of questions provided during the interview.
The study involved live experiences regarding perceptions and practices relating to healthy eating habits and physical activity of the Nigerian immigrants.
