Assignment 1a

Literature Search

Due Monday, Sept 28th

NOTE:  ASSIGNMENT MUST BE TYPED (FONT SIZE 12), PRINTED (ONE SIDE ONLY), STAPLED, AND SUBMITTED AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS.

Research Problem (RP):

  • The effect of various respiratory/critical care-related interventions (including, lung recruitment maneuvers, newer modes of ventilation, inducing chemical paralysis, prone positioning and ECMO) to combat refractory hypoxemia in the treatment of mechanically ventilated patients with ARDS remain unclear and at times, controversial.

Given the research problem (RP) above, conduct a literature search as follows:

1) Locate a total of five (5) references; include at least one from each of the three specific types of references described below:

Reference 1 –      Journal Article, original research/primary source (published within last 5 years)

Reference 2 –      Journal Article, review article/secondary source (published within last 10 years)

Reference 3 –      Journal Article, meta-analysis/secondary source (published within last 10 years)

2)   List the complete information for each reference, according to the American   Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style used in the Respiratory Care literature (refer to the Resources folder on Bb and/or additional resources identified during class)

NOTE:  Find appropriate journal abbreviation @ http://ulrichsweb.serialssolutions.com/

3)   For each reference, indicate how you located it (e.g. through a computer search of a particular database such as PubMed or another library database, through the bibliography of another source, by browsing the internet, etc.).

Note:  no searches via Google or Google Scholar; you much utilize a database that is health science-based).

4)   Write (in your own words) a short (one or two paragraphs) description/summary (aka: “annotation”) of the information found in each of these references.

5)   Provide a list of the “key words” used in your database search

6)  Include a copy of the first page (only) of the original publication for each of the five references.

7)  Be prepared to discuss your topic findings in class next week.

8)   Formulate a potential research question (RQ)

9)  Complete a “PICO” worksheet to help refine your RQ
