Steve Smith is a restaurant owner who wants to spend his $10,000 to modernize his restaurant by adapting it more closely to the preferences of his repeat customers

Problem I – (50 points)

Steve Smith is a restaurant owner who wants to spend his $10,000 to modernize his restaurant by adapting it more closely to the preferences of his repeat customers. Keeping track of his customers’ likes and dislikes. Information such as where they like to sit, what they like to eat, when they normally arrive at the restaurant are all items of interest to him, since he believes that in this way he can better serve his customers. Steve has asked you to develop a system for him that will help make his customers happy while increasing his business.

You have heard what Steve had to say about his customers. There are certainly more preferences that he can keep track of.

Develop a problem definition for Steve…

Next define each area.

Be sure to include ‘several possibilities and not just the minimum’: (10pts. per section)

Perfect Pizza wants to install a system to record orders for pizza and chicken wings. When regular customers call Perfect Pizza on the phone, they are asked their phone number. When the number is typed into a computer, the name, address, and last order date is automatically brought up on the screen. Once the order is taken, the total, including tax and delivery, is calculated. Then the order is given to the cook. A receipt is printed. Occasionally, special offers (coupons) are printed so the customer can get a discount. Drivers who make deliveries give customers a copy of the receipt and a coupon (if any). Weekly totals are kept for comparison with last year’s performance. A summary of business activities for taking an order at Perfect Pizza is as follows:

Considering the breadth of possible topics, draft a topic proposal on two food-related subjects of interest to you. Keep in mind that you will be spending the rest of the quarter researching and writing about one of them.

Exploratory Project #1 (EP-1)

Rough drafts (2 topics) due Wednesday by midnight, Week 3

Final draft (1 topic) due Sunday by midnight, Week 3*

100 points

Assignment:

Considering the breadth of possible topics, draft a topic proposal on two food-related subjects of interest to you. Keep in mind that you will be spending the rest of the quarter researching and writing about one of them. This exercise should help you determine which course of action is best. Please note that I am asking you to draft two proposals for peer-review, but you will only submit one for the final paper.

Audience:

As you write this proposal, write to an audience of University faculty who are planning to support ten research projects. Write persuasively about the plan for your research and the impact it will have on the local/DU community.

Guidelines:

When writing your proposals, consider the key features of a successful topic proposal (Bullock’s “Topic ProposalsPreview the document” for more detailed explanation of elements 1–4):

  1. Concise discussion of the subject, including relevant facts and background information from quality sources
  2. Clear statement of your intended food-related focus
  3. Rationale for choosing the subject
  4. Discussion of key resources (titles of books, articles, etc.)

Additionally, each proposal should

  • Identify your research questions
  • Define key concepts or terms that relate to your topic
  • List who you might interview on the topic (include names and titles of individuals)
  • Identify some questions you might ask the DU community in a survey of students
  • Indicate how your work will impact the public and identify its primary audience (e.g., the DU community, residents of Denver food deserts, parents of DPS students)
  • Identify at least two sources of material on each subject (i.e., a book title, a government website, a specific magazine, or a disciplinary database)

Requirements:

  • Approximately 2–3 pages for each proposal, typed and double-spaced in Times New Roman 12-point font
  • Draft of BOTH proposals due Wednesday of Week 3
  • Final draft of ONE PROPOSAL due Sunday of Week 3
  • Post your final topic proposal to Canvas Assignment EP-1 by midnight on Sunday of Week 3.

Research Paper:

The required article readings this week give a good discussion and  look at some of the frameworks that are used to manage risk within  organizations and enterprises. One of the readings this week provided an  introduction and comparison of different frameworks. As with anything,  there are going to be strengths and weaknesses to all approaches.

For your week 6 research paper, please address the following in a properly formatted research paper:

  • Do you think that ISO 27001 standard would work well in the  organization that you currently or previously have worked for? If you  are currently using ISO 27001 as an ISMS framework, analyze its  effectiveness as you perceive in the organization.
  • Are there other frameworks mentioned has been discussed in the article that might be more effective?
  • Has any other research you uncover suggest there are better frameworks to use for addressing risks?

Prof. Guidelines

  • Your paper should meet these requirements:
  • Be approximately four to six pages in length, not including the required cover page and reference page.
  • Follow APA 7 guidelines. Your paper should include an introduction, a body with fully developed content, and a conclusion.
  • Support your answers with the readings from the course and at  least two scholarly journal articles to support your positions, claims,  and observations, in addition to your textbook. The UC Library is a  great place to find resources.
  • Be clearly and well-written, concise, and logical, using excellent  grammar and style techniques. You are being graded in part on the  quality of your writing.

Grade Report

This is a program designed to hit you where you live! This program will compute your current average in a class, the minimum average that you could earn from this point forward, and the maximum average that you can earn. In addition to this, it prints the relative weights of each assignment category.

This program assumes that grades are computed out a fixed pool of points. For example, the course in which you currently find yourself has 1000 points. Your total average is computed by the formula:

grade = (points_earned * 100) / points_possible

So at any given point in the semester, you could compute your current average by totaling the points you have earned and dividing by the possible points on your assignments so far.

The minimum grade is what you would earn if you stopped handing in work. That is, you would forfeit all remaining possible points in the semester (not a good idea, usually!)

The maximum grade is what you would earn if you earned all remaining possible points in the semester.

This program will take as its input the name of a file. The file is a flat-format file of the following form:

  1. The total number of points for the entire semester on a line by itself.
  2. Zero or more assignment records, with each field being a fixed width. The format of these records are as follows:
    • Assignment Name (20 characters)
    • Category (20 characters)
    • Possible Points (14 characters)
    • Earned Points (14 characters)

Consider the file generated by a student whom we will call “Bill”. Bill has recorded his first few as shown:

Note that there is no separator between these fields! If they use the full width of the field, they run right up to the next one:

HW 3 - Struct & VarsHomework            20            20

When Bill runs the program, it generates the following output:

Here, neatness counts! Make the output line up in nice neat tables. Also note that category weights are the weight of how much the category counts toward the current average. At the end of the course, these would match the weights in the syllabus. Also, note that while Bill is earning a C, if he buckles down he can still get that A. Perhaps you could use this program to help you in your courses!
