While exploring these behavioural responses, various forms of social influences have been identified that may include conformity, obedience and compliance. There is an extensive body of literature that supports these phenomena and their effectiveness in inducing desired behaviour in group members.

Conformity stands for the phenomenon in which one alters their behaviour with reference to the group norms although there are no explicit instructions to do so (Cialdini, 2007, p. 54). The underlying factors behind conformity can be one’s desire to be accurate and have acceptance of others. since people do not want to be judged and declared as being wrong, therefore the ideal option available is to base one’s own judgement over others and present themselves in an acceptable form (Kassin, Fein and Markus, 2011). Such phenomenon is usually common in the instances where peer pressure along with work, team and community influences is strong enough to alter individual opinions. Conformity has been studied extensively by sociologists and psychologists in order to corroborate scientific evidences with social findings. One of the most eminent experiments in this regard is Asch experiment. In this experiment, participants were made to view three lines in which two were of similar lengths and were asked to identify two same lines (Cherry, 2013). All the controlled participants were made to give the wrong answers as they were informed to do so prior to the experiment.

Land pollution

This includes spilling of oil, using of farming chemicals, illegal dumping in the natural habitat areas, nuclear accidents and radiation spilling, loitering along the road and damages caused as a result of mining (Best, 31).

Land pollution leads to deforestation, destroying the natural habitat that is occupied by wildlife and damages to the natural resources. This result too many negativities such as degradation of the country’s economy. Therefore, people should avoid the possible causes of land pollution. This will result to an attractive, clean environment (Peirce, 64).

Water pollution

This is the contamination of water bodies. As a result, it leads to the death of aquatic animals and leads to health complications in human beings. Some of the reasons that are leading to water pollution include, emptying of sewage and dumping of harmful substances to river streams, Waste pills from industries that lead to contamination of underground waters (Best, 65). Others are biologically related such as bacteria cloth and therefore, water should be treated before being consumed.

Air pollution

This is the contamination of air by emission of smoke and other harmful gases such as sulphur and nitrogen. Air pollution results to health complications such as asthma. The causes of pollution are nuclear accidents, exhaust fumes emitted by vehicles and the burning of fossil fuels.

Light pollution

Improper lighting in communities that result in visibility of stars and planets at night leads to light pollution. These are street lightings shining their light in all directions rather than directing their light towards the streets and the unnecessary lighting in homes. Effects of lighting lead to disrupting the sleeping cycle and corrupt kids curious nature (Peirce, 88).

Thermal pollution

Increasing of temperatures due to human activities leads to thermal pollution. These are the areas with vehicles and concretes or generally, a busy town this can also be because of excessive emission of carbon to the atmosphere by the industrial activities, thus, damaging the ozone layer. Increased temperatures lead to the death of aquatic animals and disrupt growth of plant life (Best, 80). Therefore, temperatures should be regulated.

Visual pollution

These are generally things that are unattractive that leads to damage of the landscape. Examples are skyscrapers blocking mountains, carvings founds in rocks and trees, and litter. Visual kind of pollution is usually annoying and depressing.

The media is also responsible for inventing false beliefs and prejudices, just like the shadows in the cave in Plato’s allegory. The media preaches racial discrimination, the normality of homosexuality, hatred and other forms of things that put the human being in shackles. In fact, the sign of bondage is evident in the line, “…and if any one tried to loose another and lead him up to the light, let them only catch the offender, and they would put him to death” (Plato). Thus, it would be hard to disbelieve because if you have a different opinion from the rest, you will naturally be ostracized or even literally put to death.

What then do we make of these people who keep on believing the illusions produced by the media? Pitiful. Indeed, as Plato asked Glaucon, “…do you not suppose that he [the discoverer of the sun and the visible world] would felicitate himself on the change, and pity them?” (Plato). Truly, those who have not seen the truth remain not only in their bondage but also in their misery.
