You will be crafting an argumentative essay. There are no topic restrictions. You have absolute freedom. You can tackle a local, state, federal, or international issue. You can write about social, cultural, political, and/or economical issues. However, be sure you take a clear angle/position. The broader your argument, the longer the text.
The essay does have some minimum requirements:
- Integrate a minimum of four credible sources.
An “Exceptional†Essay (64 to 75pts):
(all expectations must be met)
- Crafts an engaging introduction that contextualizes (explains) the topic
- The title accurately captures the purpose of the essay
- Articulately voices an argument in the thesis (an implicit thesis may be used).
- Writes with vivid detail in supporting the argument. Every single claim is strongly supported with concrete evidence from a credible source.
- Substantiates (proves) the thesis with intelligent analysis. The analysis is completely developed, and it connects clearly to the thesis.
- Organizes the essay effectively; there are no digressions (talks about an issue unrelated to the argument) and no blending of topics
- No grammar or usage errors surface
- MLA format is followed
- All sources are properly cited and integrated in-text and in the work cited page.
A “Satisfactory” Essay (53 to 63pts):

- The paper is filled with concrete evidence and support to back any claims/arguments
- Organizes the essay effectively; there are few digressions and almost no blending of topics

An “Unsatisfactory” Essay (53 or less pts):
(any of the following deficiencies could result in this grade; key errors are in red)
- Introduction is too broad and fails to contextualize the topic
- No central meaning or argument is articulated in the thesis
- The sources are incorrectly documented: in-text or in the work cited page
- The essay is heavily deficient in either description or analysis
- A limited number (or lack) of credible sources are integrated.

- Grammar and usage errors compromise the meaning of the sentences and take away from your credibility (sentence fragments)
