a) A Mile is 4 laps around the track, a student wants to know how fast each lap has to be so that he can run a mile in exactly 7 min and 45 sec (This does NOT equal 7.45 min!!!). Let x equal the time for each lap.
b) His friend wants to run a mile in exactly 6 min and 15 sec, how fast do her laps need to be to run it in this time? Let x equal the time for each lap.
(Remember, 1 min DOES NOT have 100 seconds, so 6 seconds DOES NOT equal 0.06 min. Use ratios and proportions to help you figure that part out.)
