Research Assignment Stage 3

Assignment: This is the final culmination of your original research – you made it! Here is where you put together all the efforts of your previous 2 Stages. This will look slightly different for everyone but the focus remains on your primary object and sources. From here you build your final essay.

The Specifics:

  • Ensure that your name, student number, course number, and final word count (3000 words, give or take 10%) all appear on the first page. Presentations will be 15min.
  • Ensure your citations (foot notes and bibliography) are consistent. Use your resources well! For oral presentations, these will be submitted as below at the time of your presentation.
  • This assignment assesses your ability to follow instructions, conduct research in the library, write a cohesive essay at a third-year level, and utilise primary sources. I will be looking for at least 8 different sources. Journals accessed via the internet are fair game but, on the whole, avoid online ‘sources’ and aim for variety!
  • Plagiarism WILL NOT be tolerated. See your syllabus and the University of Victoria Calendar for details. Understanding what constitutes plagiarism is your responsibility and is vital as it could result in a failing grade or worse.

Workshop or Resource Packages

Assignment #2: Workshop or Resource Packages

This assignment is focused on expanding your knowledge of community resources available for children, families and early childhood educators by researching and creating practical working resources to directly support your collaborative practices.

Due Date:  Friday November 17, 2022 by  11:59PM PST

This assignment represents 30% of your total mark.

How to complete this assignment

Choose either option A or B (below)

Option A: Workshop

Create a practical, detailed 40-60 min. workshop outline that is focused on one identified target group from the list below. The workshop audience may be either families of young children or educators/administrators in a particular neighbourhood or geographic area – please be sure to identify these 3 elements at the outset (audience, target group and location). (2 marks).

This assignment has two major components: (a) planning & delivery (b) content. (25 marks)

Workshop planning and delivery is a critical piece of this assignment.

The workshop must be designed as a three party collaborative initiative that includes the 1) families, 2) educators, and 3) community partners as active contributors to the workshop from the planning onward.

Example #1: With the collaborative approach in mind, think about your audience and how you will ensure (& show in your assignment submission) that they are part of the planning process too (as opposed to being only attendees at a workshop).

Example #2: Again, with the collaborative approach in mind, think about (& show in your assignment submission,) how will you ensure that the community partners are working together in this workshop. Who is doing what? How are resources being utilized?

Delivery choices for the workshop require thoughtful, detailed planning.

Example #1: Will this be an in-person or an online workshop – think carefully about which modality would best match the purpose of the workshop, in the neighbourhood identified, and be most beneficial for the audience at hand.

Example #2: a power point presentation may not always be the best method for your workshop audience, and as such you may opt to choose another mode of content delivery (perhaps interactive and participatory or another…).

Whichever planning, delivery methods & modalities you choose, ensure that you specifically & briefly note all your rationales within your assignment submission.

Some starting ideas to consider in the planning & delivery:

  •  How/who will decide the workshop is needed and what focus it will take?
  •  Who else could be included? How will collaborative resources be utilized?
  •  What communication modalities will be used for marketing this workshop? Would gatekeepers be helpful? If so – who are they and how would you find them?
  •  What can be pre-planned so everyone involved feels welcome, valued, included and comfortable ?
  •  Audience accessibility – time of year/day, transportation, children etc
  •  Configuration of space/materials (if in-person) options
  •  What location will it take place (host site) & why there
  •  Costs & funders
  •  How will the workshop success be measured?

The workshop content focus is to share supportive, meaningful resources and it must draw on and apply concepts addressed throughout this course so far. In the collaborative approach – everyone in the collaboration has potential to benefit in some way.

The workshop must be designed as a collaborative initiative that actively includes the families, educators and community partners as active contributors from the planning onward. Course knowledge and understanding will be visible in your workshop design & style of delivery as well as the content.

Some starting ideas to consider regarding content:

                   – content relevancy for the identified audience – is it directly usable

                   – workshop relevancy/benefits for collaborative partners

                   – quantity of information

                   – how might they remember key points easily and quickly

As well as completeness, accuracy & evidence of depth of understanding, organization, writing quality, creativity, clarity of message, ease of access to resources for workshop attendees will also be considered in marking. (3 marks)

Option B: Resource packages

Research and create 2 separate, practical resource documents (tri fold pamphlets or similar format) – one for families & one for early childhood educators/administrators within an identified neighbourhood or geographic area of your choice and targeting a specific population from the list provided below. NOTE: resources in the educator pamphlet should be those that would support educators in their daily work efforts to support the identified target families.

Example #1: in the educator/administrator pamphlet there might be a resource that provides information on how educators can make the physical space of an early learning site more inviting for fathers or those in father roles. By educators using the resource & taking action from it, they are in this way supporting fathers and those in father roles.

Example #2: in the educator/administrator pamphlet there may be a resource that provides educators with a source for acquiring quality Indigenous children’s books relevant to the identified neighbourhood. When educators access this resource and offer these books in their early learning spaces, they are then in turn supporting and honouring Indigenous families.

Example #3: included in the educator/administrator pamphlet there may be resources to assist administrators in methods and considerations when planning meetings with newcomer refugee families.

Ensure that the 2 resource documents clearly indicate the target audience and location. (2 marks) Each document should provide an offering of available supports for the same target group from the list below and for the specific, identified neighbourhood/ geographic area you have chosen. Put another way, only choose one target group and one neighbourhood/geographic area – the same for both documents. You are welcome to continue working with the same neighbourhood addressed in assignment #1 or you may choose a new area.

Each chosen resource in the pamphlets must include the name, location, and complete contact information as well as a very, very brief summary of how the specific service offered will benefit the audience. This summary is not a cut/paste from the resource sites, but rather is written by you in your own words and in a way that specifically indicates how the resource will benefit the reading audience in the location you have identified. You will need to be concise as space will be limited.

Include a minimum of 6 different resources per pamphlet. If you find a large resource that has multiple offerings, choose only one of them to include in the pamphlet rather than noting many programs within the same resource.

Remember the concepts in this course and think broadly and practically in your choices. Try putting yourself in the shoes of the pamphlet reader and think about what might be needed & helpful. (26 marks)

The document information, layout and design must be well organized, creative, easy to read & use, relevant and polished for immediate sharing and practical for use by families and educators in the neighbourhood identified. The 2 documents should differ in both content & design because there are 2 different audiences. Please find and use meaningful images and symbols rather than clip art and cartoon-like characters. (4 marks)

Document style and format

As always, please remember to include a cover page for the assignment.

For both Option A & B, be sure to support your information/rationale by including referencing and evident connections related to the course material and independently researched material. In option B (resource pamphlets) rather than inserting citations within the body of the pamphlets (and use that valuable space) only include a list of references as an appendix.

Option #A (workshop) should be approximately 4 pages in length, double-spaced, with font Times New Roman, size 10-12.

Option #B (pamphlets) should be 2 double sided pages each = total 4 pages. (equivalent of 2 tri-fold pamphlets), font type/size is variable as space will be at a premium.

Overall organization, creative clear presentation, spelling, grammar and writing quality will also be considered in marking.

  • Families with indigenous background
  • Families as newcomers to Canada (immigrant or refugee)
  • Grandparents raising or co-raising their grandchildren

Identify the Indigenous territories

Identify the Indigenous territories

Students are asked to write a paper introducing themselves and their family. Indigenous scholars such as Robina Thomas and Kim Anderson speak about the importance of self-locating in academic writing (i.e, these are examples off scholars but you are not asked to reference their writing necessarily).  Identifying one’s people, land, community, and grandparents is a traditional practice so that people would know who and where you came from. In this paper, you are asked to share (if the information is available – contact me if you want to talk about your approach):

  • Identify the Indigenous territories on which you live
  • Identify the Indigenous peoples, their languages and community agencies in the territory where you live. Ideally, include agencies that serve that particular group
  • Discuss how knowledge of self, place, and history relates to caring for Indigenous children in an educational or social service setting.
  • Discuss Todd and Wade’s notion of the colonial code and propose a more egalitarian and socially just way of working with Indigenous families

The above questions will count for 30/100

In addition, you may reflect on and address the following questions as you develop this paper:

  • Who are the Indigenous peoples who live on the land traditionally?
  • Are there other intentional communities that came later (e.g., Doukhobours, Ukrainians, Scots, Quakers, war resistors, religious groups)?
  • What are the Indigenous names for this land (please reference)?
  • What languages are/were spoken by these peoples (please reference)?
  • Were there Indian residential schools in these communities? Which churches were given responsibility for the education and care of Indigenous children?
  • What kinds of reparations have been made as part of this history (e.g., lawsuits, Truth and Reconciliation events, Common Experience processes, monuments)?
  • What Indigenous political, educational, health-based or child and family organizations are there in these communities? What kinds of services do they offer?
  • What initiatives or community efforts are trying to repair racism and create community between Indigenous peoples, settlers and immigrants where you live?
  • How do improved community and social relationships foster well-being for children?

Any additional discussion you pull from the second set of questions will be 15/100

As you write this paper, use your voice as a ‘tour guide’ for the reader, leading them through the communities and explaining your experiences and observations. Provide a clear introduction and summary/conclusion, telling the reader what they will see/experience in this paper and then what you have shown them.

https://eazyweezyhomeworks.com/order/

Use discuss your experiences and observations (i.e., not a research paper) 5/100

Clear introduction telling what the reader will experience 5/100

Clear conclusion telling what you have shown 5/100

For sources, you may use reference materials or Internet sources that provide up-to-date information. Many of the bands and tribal websites provide updates on treaty processes, language classes, and events/social services in their communities.

The paper should be:

  • 7-8 pages (8 pages max, excluding title page and references)
  • 12 point font, double-spaced
  • APA formatting with title page and reference list

Length 8-10 pages 10/100

APA throughout body 15/100

Title page 5/100

Reference list 10/100
