Instructions

This assignment is comprised of 2 parts, the first of which is due this week. Part II will be due in Week 7.

In Part I this week, choose a case from your state that involves civil rights or civil liberties that wound its way up to the United States Supreme Court. If your state does not have a case that ended up in the United States Supreme Court, choose a civil rights case from another state that ended up in the Supreme Court of the United States.

Here is a brief description of civil rights and civil liberties: Civil rights refers to equal social opportunities under the law. It gives you these freedoms such as the right to vote, the right to public education, or a fair trial, among other things, regardless of your wealth or race. Civil liberties mean freedom of religion, equal treatment and due process under the law, and the right to privacy.

You should be able to go online and look up your state and famous cases that ended up in the Supreme Court. For example, Brown v Board of Education (1951) started in Topeka, Kansas and ended up in the Supreme Court of the United States. Another example would be Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley v Steve Sisolak, Governor of Nevada (2020) that started in Nevada and ended up the United States Supreme Court.

Research your court case and write an outline of the case that you will be using to prepare a presentation, which will either be a narrated PowerPoint, a Kaltura Video, or some other format as approved by your instructor. Be sure to verify the presentation format with your instructor before starting work on this assignment.

This week’s assignment should include (a) summary of the case, and (b) a case outline

A. Summary of the Case

In one or two paragraphs, provide a general overview of the case that serves as a snapshot of what the case is about and how it ended up in your state high court. A summary is using your words to write a brief history of the case. Do not give your opinion or your interpretation but stick to the facts only.

B: Case Outline

Your court case outline should include:

  1. Title: Name of the case
  2. Facts of the case: Provide key facts involving the case.
  3. History of the case: What legal action was taken based on what your state laws say about this case?
  4. Legal questions: What were the legal issues the court had to decide?
  5. Decision or holdings: Did the court decide for the plaintiff or the defendant? Explain the reason behind the decision?
  6. Verdict and opinion (judgement): What were the concurring and dissenting opinions? How many judges decided for the defendant and how many justices decided against the defendant? What was the final verdict from the judge or the jury, if it was a jury trial?

Summary: What was the resulting impact of the ruling? How did the citizens of your state benefit from it? Make sure to not give our opinion but stick to the facts only. This summary just gives a brief rundown of the case and conclusion only, just the

Writing Requirements (APA format)

  • The length of your outline will vary. Usually an outline is anywhere from 1-3 pages long. Make sure to write full sentences to explain your case. It is a concise list to be used as a reference for you during the presentation.
Using the outline, you will be describing the court case in your presentation and the scenario around the court case. The use of Wikipedia as a primary source of information is to be avoided – it is not a reliable source of information.
Search for an example of a case outline in the Internet. Without going into much detail at this state, each of the items listed above has a subject sentence with 3-6 bullet points that can help you expand on the topic.

For Week 8, you will be creating a narrated PowerPoint, or a video as approved by your instructor, from this week’s outline.
This assignment is worth 200 points.

  • 1-inch margins
  • Double spaced
  • 12-point Times New Roman font
  • Title page
  • References page (minimum of 2 scholarly sources in addition to textbook if cited)

The family class | Sociology homework help

the topic: Are the contemporary American families in “crisis” or are they simply changing? The purpose of this assignment is to examine how families are portrayed in the media and to compare these images to the theories and findings considered in our course material.  For this assignment, you will conduct a content analysis of a number of TV programs or movies.  A “content analysis” uses popular materials as data and interprets the patterns observed in the data to discover its social meaning.  For this assignment, you will analyze popular materials to make an argument or present a point of view about the issue of family “crisis” and change. Our study of the family will look for both explicit and implicit assumptions about central issues regarding family life (e.g. marriage, divorce, parenting, living on welfare, teen pregnancy, family violence, child care, same sex relationships, etc.).  Your paper will analyze the views about family life that are embedded in these popular materials and the implications of these views.  To do this assignment, imagine what you would be able to say about contemporary families if you only knew what you observed for this assignment.  Analyze these images of families in light of our course readings, lectures and discussions.  When selecting what you will observe, make sure that there is content related to families.  You should observe at least ONE of the following

:10 TV programs (1/2 or 1 hour shows; “reality” or fictional shows)

or 5 moviesPlease document all of your sources, including dates and times and titles.  You do not need to submit your notes. What you are looking for

:Family structure:  what kind of family is portrayed?  In what way is it portrayed? Are there assumptions about the “correct” family structure?

Roles:  what roles do different family members play (e.g. gender roles, roles for children and parents, etc.)?  What are the assumptions about the roles people will play?  Is there any conflict in these roles?Problems and Issues:  what are the central problems and issues facing these families? Are there conflicts or tensions?  What is the basis of the conflict or tension?  Does the conflict get resolved?  If so, how?Imagery:  how is the content presented (e.g. tone, style of words, sound, location, etc.)?  What do we feel about families after the observation?Perspective:  What is the perspective being assumed?  What message is being made about families today? What rhetoric do you observe about American families?  What purpose does rhetoric about family life serve?  Interpretations:Your paper should be organized according to the subheadings listed above.  Don’t forget an introduction and conclusion that ties your ideas together, a thesis that makes a particular argument about what you found, and appropriate transitions between sections of your paper.  Think about the following questions:  what did you discover about the images of family that are projected today (including family structure, roles, problems and issues, imagery and perspective)?  Based on your analysis, would you say that American families are in “crisis” or are they changing in ways that do not indicate a “crisis?”  If you were an alien who didn’t know anything about American family life and these images were all you had to consider, what would you conclude about American families today?  Your main task is to document the patterns that you observe and to discuss the implications of these patterns.  Be sure that you give specific examples from your observations to illustrate the kinds of patterns you saw.  Finally, how would the authors of our readings critique the images of family that you observe?  Interpret your results in light of our course readings.  What would our authors say if they had done this study themselves? (It would be best if you integrated this into your paper rather than making this a separate section.)  In other words, refer back to your readings and/or lectures as you conduct your analysis of the patterns that you see in the films or TV shows. Organizing Your Paper:In your presentation of your research results, you should organize your paper with the following subheadings:  family structure, roles, problems and issues, imagery and perspective.  In each section, describe your overall findings and then give some examples from what you watched.  Also, be sure that you refer to our course materials.  You also need to draw some conclusions about the implications of your findings for how we think about family crisis and change.Do not just summarize the plot of the films or TV shows.  Provide only enough information to illustrate your examples.  This is NOT a book-report style of paper.  This assignment asks you to develop your analysis and interpretations of those sources of data. Your data are the TV shows or films.  Provide a summary of your results, give specific examples, and explain what implications we can draw from what you found.  Don’t provide a plot summary—just give enough details to illustrate your argument with examples.

Thus, when writing your papers, do NOT summarize the show episode by episode or provide summaries of every show or film you watched.  In each section, you will give some **overall** findings with regard to ALL of the shows.  Then you will give some examples.  You do not need to give an example of each show or episode in each section.  That would be too long.  You need to pick some examples that illustrate your points.  Do this with each theme assigned.  Make sure that you say something in each of those sections about how this fits into your ideas about family crisis vs. change.  In other words, what are the implications of what you observed for how we think about family structure, roles, etc.?  Do NOT provide lengthy summaries of all of the shows or episodes.  You are doing an analysis, not a book report. As you analyze your popular materials, be sure that you make references to some of the readings we have completed in class.Start your paper with an introductory paragraph that makes an argument or has a thesis regarding what you observed with regard to family crisis or change overall.  It might be best to write this after you have written the rest of the paper.  Make sure you have a conclusion that ties it all together and reflects on what this all means for the debate about family crisis or change. Please document your sources of information—include a list of what you analyzed and include all relevant information (dates, times, titles, etc.)Suggested Length:  6-7 page

Assignment Three
(30 points)

Part 1: Children In Poverty
(17 Points – each part is worth 2 points unless noted)

1. Open the file ChildrenBelowPovertyLevel.xls containing data from the Census Bureau.

a. Make an X-Y scatter plot of the data including the trendline and the R-squared value. Note that Excel will, in most cases, put a legend on your graph by default.  When there is only one data series (as here), you don’t need a legend, and it really should be removed.  It should include all the details discussed in the reading on graphs. Paste this chart in your Word document. (3 points)

b. Predict what percentage of children will be below the poverty level in the year 2012 using the trendline equation. Type your result in your Word document.

c. How much confidence do you have in this prediction?  In 3-4 sentences write an argument that either supports or does not support your prediction of the percentage of children below the poverty level 2012.  (Important:  Use the language you learned in the reading for this week. There are three major components you must include in your argument to receive full credit.) (3 points)

d. Use the regression equation (the equation on the graph) to predict when 100% of children in the US will be below the poverty level. Show your workand type your answer into your Word document. (As long as you show how you set up the problem, that is enough. You do not need to show every step you used when solving.)

e. How much confidence do you have in this prediction?

f. Predict the percentage of children below the poverty level in the year 2016 using the trendline equation. Type your result in your Word document.

g. The actual percentage of children below the poverty level in the year 2012 was 21.3%. In 2016 that percentage fell to 17.6%. Compare these facts to your answers from parts (b) and (f). Now, taking into account all your answers above, write a thoughtful analysis of the usefulness of linear modeling. (You may choose to comment on when and how it is most effective to use linear models and also what cautions we should take when using linear models.) To receive full points, you must truly analyze the work you have done above. A simple summary of your findings will receive zero points. (3 points)

Part 2: Divorce in the US
(13 Points – each part is worth 2 points unless noted)

2. Open the file DivorceRate.xls which contains data on the rate of divorce per 1,000 people in the U.S. from 1960 to 2015.

a. Make an XY scatter graph of the years and the rate of divorce. Add an appropriate trendline to the data, along with an equation, R^2 value, and all other effective graphing components. (Hint: Be extremely thoughtful about the trendline you use in this case. Be sure to check the trendline guidelines to verify that the trendline you use is appropriate. You will lose points if your trendline is not appropriate.) It should include all the details discussed in the week 3 reading on graphs. Paste the resulting chart into your Word document. (3 points)

b. Use the regression equation to predict the rate of divorce in  2018. Type your answer in your Word document. (1 point)

c.  How much confidence do you have in your prediction from part b?  (Important:  Use the language you learned in the reading for this week. There are three major components you must include in your argument to receive ful credit.) (3 points)

d. Use your regression equation to predict when there will be no divorce in the US. Show your work and type your answer into your Word document. (As long as you show how you set up the problem, that is enough. You do not need to show every step you used when solving.) (1 point)

e. Do you have confidence in your prediction from part d?  Explain by writing a confidence argument.

f. Use your regression equation to predict what the rate of divorce will be in 2050.  Type your answer into your Word document – don’t forget to include units!  (1 point)

g. How much confidence do you have in your prediction from part f?  Explain by writing a confidence argument.

Discussion: discussion: patient preferences and decision making, nurs | NURS 6052 – Essentials of Evidence-Based Practice | Walden University

Changes in culture and technology have resulted in patient populations that are often well informed and educated, even before consulting or considering a healthcare need delivered by a health professional. Fueled by this, health professionals are increasingly involving patients in treatment decisions. However, this often comes with challenges, as illnesses and treatments can become complex.

What has your experience been with patient involvement in treatment or healthcare decisions?

In this Discussion, you will share your experiences and consider the impact of patient involvement (or lack of involvement). You will also consider the use of a patient decision aid to inform best practices for patient care and healthcare decision making.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on a time when you experienced a patient being brought into (or not being brought into) a decision regarding their treatment plan.
  • Review the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute’s Decision Aids Inventory at https://decisionaid.ohri.ca/.
    • Choose “For Specific Conditions,” then Browse an alphabetical listing of decision aids by health topic.
  • NOTE: To ensure compliance with HIPAA rules, please DO NOT use the patient’s real name or any information that might identify the patient or organization/practice.

By Day 3 of Week 11

Post a brief description of the situation you experienced and explain how incorporating or not incorporating patient preferences and values impacted the outcome of their treatment plan. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how including patient preferences and values might impact the trajectory of the situation and how these were reflected in the treatment plan. Finally, explain the value of the patient decision aid you selected and how it might contribute to effective decision making, both in general and in the experience you described. Describe how you might use this decision aid inventory in your professional practice or personal life.

By Day 6 of Week 11

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days and offer alternative views on the impact of patient preferences on treatment plans or outcomes, or the potential impact of patient decision aids on situations like the one shared.
