His105: american history after 1865

Part 1: Post a Response

The 1970s and 1980s brought remarkable changes for the Untied States. The Cold War between the US and its allies versus the Soviet Union and its allies/clients was still the dominant international issue. China was also going to start emerging as a major world power. Nixon was dealing with Vietnam and then Watergate—one of the pivotal scandals of modern history. Reagan would bring a new national spirit, and he would tackle economic problems by deregulation and moderating taxes—and he would be dealing with a very new type of Soviet leadership.

Discuss lessons in leadership with the examples of President Nixon and President Reagan:

Choose and discuss (in a full paragraph or two) one of the following two topics related to the 1960s and 1970s, especially to the terms of Presidents Nixon and Reagan.

  1. Discuss lessons in leadership with the examples of President Nixon and President Reagan:
    • Identify a leadership example from President Nixon’s handling of the Watergate issue, and another example from Reagan’s presidency.
    • Give two lessons in leadership—one from each example. They can be positive lessons or negative lessons (good things to do; things not to do, etc). Discuss how these lessons can apply to those in business or politics or some other realm.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about these issues.
  2. Discuss Presidents Nixon and Reagan as Cold Warriors:
    • Identify a strategy or policy from the Nixon presidency that related to the Cold War, and another from the Reagan presidency.
    • In hindsight, describe your views of each approach and how effective (or not) each approach was.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read these issues.

Respond to Peer:

Discuss lessons in leadership with examples of President Nixon and President Reagan.*

NIXON.

Image is everything, however effectiveness in good leadership skills goes even farther. It is almost a reasonably good idea to never let the left hand know, what the right hand is doing, as so was President #37, Richard Nixon. I remembered him on a black and white television screen, as always being so defensive, however always advocating a policy in one form or another. He seemed to be striving to do the right thing for the American people, however he was his own worst enemy. . He was very ambitious, highly intelligent, and wanted nothing more than to prove himself a good leader. I can remember some parts of  the Vietnam War, because at that time, my parents had 5 children, I was 11 years old and my 1 and only brother which was the eldest, was 22 years old, and was in college, my parents were afraid he might have to leave college to join the military, however in 1973, Nixon withdrew the last U.S. soldiers from South Vietnam, ending the military draft that same year, to prevent the possibility of further U.S. intervention in Vietnam. One of his leadership skills had Americans concerned as well as his own political party and other politicians. One  (Example ) bad leadership quality, President Nixon, campaign advisor, Anna Chennault, at his bequest, established a back channel communication with  the South Vietnamese to prolong the Vietnam War, until Nixon was in office for the second term of his presidency. This action placed his on ambition ahead of the lives of  American servicemen, so that he could be the one to negotiate an end to the conflict. I feel that, that was not a good leadership skill position to place America in. It was a risk that caused thousands of lives to perish, and hundreds more missing in action. This is not to say that he was not an effective leader, he was just a bad role model, in this particular leadership skill, during that time, because he did accomplish many great things for the American people, that still affects our lives today.

Reagan.

Ronald Reagan # 40

Ronald Reagan was a public figure well before he was a political figure. I recall him as an impressionable actor on black and white television screens in a lot of western movies, in particular the Death Valley Days episodes, that ran weekly, of course they were reruns, but my parents liked watching western films and other serial shows. I was 19 years old when President Reagan took office, he was the oldest president to date to become president in 1981 at the age of 73. He served two terms, and he was a showmen, statesman, and a political leader for years. I believe that President Reagan had good leadership qualities, in many of foreign and domestic affairs. One (example) of good leadership skills was when President Reagan, while skillfully dealing with Congress, he obtained legislation to stimulate economic growth, curb inflation, and increased employment, and strengthened our national defense. In 1986, he also obtained an overhaul of the income tax code, which eliminated many deductions and exempt millions of people with low incomes.

* Identify  leadership examples from Nixon handling the Watergate issue, and another example from Reagan’s presidency *

President Nixon is best know for the scandal of Watergate. Watergate scandal was a scandal during and after the 1972 Presidential Election. Richard Nixon (Republican) was running against Democrat George McGovern,.The scandal brought to light wire tapes, secret papers that were stolen, Nixon was involved in a cover up, and possibly had hired the men to brake into the Watergate offices, he soon later resigned as president of the U.S. President Ronald Reagan was remembered for his great speech in Berlin in June 1987 to the country and to the Soviet Union, when he said ” Mr. Gorbachev, ” Tear down this wall”.

* Discuss how these lessons can apply to those in business or politics or some other realm.*

I can only hope that when in business and or politics the people that are placed in these positions carry themselves with dignity, fidelity, and integrity. If we can not be honorable in the profession that has been afforded to us, why would we want to risk so much. There can not be enough money and power in the world to risk ones life, or the lives of others. When we do bad things, everyone suffers, and the effects last for generations to come. America has suffered a lot, and has lost much more for democracy, and do we have to continue on the path of destruction, and risk other lives, to be right, or even a super power?

Children, Families, and Communities Guidebook: Parenting Roles

[CLO: 4]

Throughout this course you will develop a Children, Families, and Communities Guidebook that demonstrates your knowledge, learning, and personal philosophy developed during this course. In Weeks 1 through 5, you will add a new section to this guidebook, with a specific focus on partnerships with children, families, and communities. In Week 6, you will present your cumulative guidebook, as the Summative Assignment, by developing an audio, video, or multimedia presentation to show your work. The purpose of this guidebook is to demonstrate your philosophy of how to develop and maintain effective partnerships with children, families, and communities in your role as an educator. To help you better understand how to develop an excellent Guidebook, please see this week’s Instructor Guidance for explicit modeling, examples, and resources.

The final guidebook, developed in Weeks 1 through 5, will include the following sections:

  • Parenting Roles
  • Beginning Early Childhood Education Professional Family Partnerships
  • Maintaining Early Childhood Education Professional Family Partnerships
  • Families, Communities, and Advocacy
  • Family Behaviors, Circumstances, and Diversity

This week you will begin developing your Children, Families, and Communities Guidebook. More specifically, you will be completing the Parenting Roles section. This week’s readings include the American College of Pediatricians (2013) position statement on the rights, roles, and responsibilities of parents. This resource presents seven distinct roles that families play in modern day parenting. The family’s role often has a direct impact on the developing child, as well as those to who educate them. It is important that early childhood professionals are knowledgeable of various parenting styles so that they can best support children’s development, along with supporting parental growth and learning.

Guidebook Setup: You may choose one of the tools below to create your Children, Families, and Communities Guidebook, utilizing either a text-based guidebook or electronic guidebook.
Select one tool that you will use and add to each week to create your guidebook:

Guidebook Title Page: Your Guidebook title page will help create a professional and knowledgeable image of who you are as an expert in family and community partnerships. Please include your name, title of your guidebook, and at least one relevant visual.

Guidebook Parenting Roles Section: For this section, you are going to create a Parenting Roles newsletter that you can share with the families in your care. Create a one to two page newsletter that summarizes the seven roles that a parent or guardian plays in a child’s life at school and at home. Explain the potential positive and negative implications of the parental role. Finally, recommend one helpful resource that supports collaborative family relationships between the early childhood professional, parents or guardians, and the child.

Content Expectations:

  • Children, Families, and Communities Guidebook Title page: Set up your Children, Families, and Communities Guidebook with a title page, including your name, title of your guidebook, and at least one relevant visual.
  • Parenting Roles Newsletter: Using Chapter 3 from the Gestwicki text as a guide for the seven parenting roles, create a newsletter that includes the following:

Any two question should be answered

Pay attention to what you are being asked to do (see Grading Rubric below). For example, to describe does not mean to list, but to tell about or illustrate in more than two or three sentences, providing appropriate arguments for your responses using theories discussed in our textBe sure to address all parts of the topic question as most have multiple parts. A verifiable current event (less than 4 years old) relevant to at least one of the topics you respond to is a fundamental component of your quiz as well.  You cannot use information from the text book or any book/article by the author of the text book as a current event.  Make sure that your reference has a date of publication.  For each chapter quiz and final quiz you are required to find and include at least one reference and reference citation to a current event less than 4 years old (a reference with no date (n.d.) is not acceptable) in answer to at least one question.  This requires a reference citation in the text of your answer and a reference at the end of the question to which the reference applies.  You must include some information obtained from the reference in your answer.  The references must be found on the internet and you must include a URL in your reference so that the reference can be verified.

You should type your responses directly under the appropriate question. Be sure to include your name on your quiz. Only the first three (3) questions with answers will be graded.   Include your name in the document filename. Your completed quiz must be uploaded into the appropriate eCollege Dropbox, no later than 11:59pm on the due date.  Do well.

  1. How do religion, law, and philosophy each provide different grounds for justifying a moral principle?  How can each perspective be applied in analyzing the moral principle “Stealing is wrong”?  Be sure to elaborate and provide your “theoretical” rationale in support of your position. (knowledge)
  2. You have just been appointed to the board of directors of TAMU.com, however, the dot.com company has been experiencing some difficult financial times that have resulted in revenue losses in three of the last four quarters.  As you take your new position, you discover that two proposals are on the table.  Each proposal has been put forth as a means for dealing with TAMU’s immediate financial problems.  Proposal #1 recommends all employees be retained, but that an immediate wage freeze for all employees be imposed for the next six months.  (Employees may even be asked to take a 5 percent cut in pay if things do not improve by the end of that period.)  Proposal #2 recommends that wages not be frozen, but that 5 percent of the company’s workforce be laid off.  (One piece of reasoning behind this proposal is that taking more drastic measures will “protect” 95 percent of TAMU’s workers and will send a message to Wall Street and local investors that TAMU is serious about improving its financial position and that it will soon be a stable company once again.) The board is evenly split, seven members for proposal #1 and seven for proposal #2.  Yours will be the tie-breaking vote.  In your deliberation, describe how an act utilitarian, a rule utilitarian, a rule deontologist, and act deontologist would reach each solution to this dilemma and on what basisWhich solution seems most plausible? Be sure to elaborate and provide your “theoretical” rationale in support of your position. (comprehension)
  3.  Do you feel that any of the four traditional ethical theories examined in chapter two are adequate to handle moral issues that arise as a result of cybertechnology?  Is a brand new ethical theory needed, as some have argued, for the Internet age; or can a comprehensive, integrated theory, such as the one proposed by James Moor (i.e., his theory of “just consequentialism”) be used successfully to resolve moral issues involving cybertechnology?  Explain your answer. Be sure to elaborate and provide your “theoretical” rationale in support of your position. (comprehension)
  4. Consider a case in which the United States government, with the approval of the majority of Americans, decides to round up all Arab-Americans and relocate them into internment camps.  Imagine that you have a friend who is an American citizen of Arab descent.  She asks you to protect her from the authorities.  You have known this person all of your life, and you are convinced that she is a loyal American.  You agree to hide her in the third floor of your house.  A United States federal agent knocks on your door and asks if you know the whereabouts of the person you are hiding.  How would you respond to that agent?  You now face a genuine moral dilemma because you cannot both keep your promise to your friend and tell the truth to the federal agent.  Initially, your gut reaction might suggest that the solution to your dilemma is really quite simple.  For example, you might believe that a far greater good will be served by lying to the federal agent than by breaking your promise to your friend.  However, to embrace the moral principle inherent in that line of reasoning is to fall back into utilitarianism.  We have already seen some of the difficulties that can result from trying to be a consistent and thoroughgoing utilitarian.  Could you consistently universalize a moral principle that states:  “Whenever you must choose between telling the truth to authorities and breaking a promise to a friend, always honor your promise”?  Will that principle work in every case?  Will Ross’s theory help in this situation?  Explain your answer. Be sure to elaborate and provide your “theoretical” rationale in support of your position. (comprehension)

Future considerations for apn roles

need to have it ASAP

There are three troublesome issues that have emerged in the advancement of APRN practice. These issues in APRN include: 1) the clear role development and morphed to fill gaps in services; 2) the lack of clarity regarding role uniqueness; and 3) the dearth in nursing specific outcomes. From your readings this week, discuss 1 of the 3 questions. Begin your discussion with the question you will be addressing.

  1. Why might the development and morphing of roles based on gaps in medicine be problematic for advancement of APRNs? What actions might a nurse take to reduce this?
  2. In what ways can an APRN distinguish his or her role from other nursing roles and medical counterparts? Why might this be important?
  3. How can APRNs encourage nursing-based outcome studies?

Option 2

Problem I:10-55 from the textbook (revised to include additional research).

The Morris Corporation is a very successful and profitable manufacturing corporation. The corporation just completed leasehold improvements of its corporate offices, primarily for its top executives. The president and founder of the corporation, Mr. Timothy Couch, is an avid collector of artwork and has instructed that the lobby and selected offices be decorated with rare collections of art. These expensive works of art were purchased by the corporation in accordance with Couch’s directives. Couch justified the purchase of these works of art on the premise that (1) they are excellent investments and should increase in value in the future, (2) they provide an appropriate and impressive atmosphere when current and prospective customers visit the corporation’s offices, and (3) the artwork is depreciable property and the corporation will be able to take sizable write-offs against income. The financial vice-president of the corporation has requested your advice as to the depreciability of the leasehold improvements and the art. Prepare a research memorandum for the financial vice-president on this issue. Include a discussion on the different depreciation methods permitted and the availability of those methods of depreciation for leaseholds and the art.
