Unit I Assignment

HR Mission Statement

By now, from your textbook readings and lesson, you should have a firm grasp on the different types of human resource

values and strategies that are commonplace in the workforce. From this information (this is a two-part assignment):

Part One:

A. Create and briefly describe a fictional large company of your choice. This is your company and it should

preferably be in your current or desired future industry. This company and the HR mission statement you

create will be used as a foundation for future assignments in this course.

B. Compare and contrast the three Sample Mission Statements below. Evaluate them for overall effectiveness

addressing what is strong, weak, effective, or ineffective and state your reasons.

Sample 1: Human Resources Mission Statement

Our mission is to treat each person as a valued customer while contributing positively to the bottom line of [Company

Name] through comprehensive programming that displays a thorough understanding of all aspects of the human

resources profession, including proactive involvement in areas of legal compliance and service that displays an

enthusiastic interest in the lives of others. We will continually develop our own repertoire of skills and maintain a balance

between our personal and professional lives.

Sample 2: Human Resources Mission Statement

The mission of [Company Name] is dedication to the highest quality of customer service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit. To Our Employees We are committed to provide our employees a stable work environment with equal opportunity for learning and personal growth. Creativity and innovation are encouraged for improving the effectiveness of [the company]. Above all, employees will be provided the same concern, respect, and caring attitude within the organization that they are expected to share externally with every [company] customer.

Sample 3: Human Resources Mission Statement

It is the mission of the human resources department to provide the following quality services to the employees of

[Company Name]:

 recruitment of qualified individuals;

 retention of valuable employees;

 training, development, and education to promote individual success and increase overall value to the

organization;

 a safe and healthful working environment;

 inspiration and encouragement for a high level of employee morale through recognition, effective communication,

and constant feedback; and

 resources for administering benefits, policies, and procedures.

These services are achieved through a teamwork philosophy that is inspired through effective organizational skills,

proactive efforts, and maintaining a balance between professionalism and the ability to have fun!

Part Two:

Use your analysis to write your own HR mission statement for your fictional company. Consider the following questions

when evaluating and formulating your mission statement. Keep in mind that good mission statements are short, clear,

concise, & brief hard-hitting comments on your mission.

 Why does your HR function exist? What do you want for your customers and how can HR provide that?

 Who are your customers and what can you do for them that will enrich their lives and contribute to their success,

both present and future?

 What image of your function do you want to convey internally and externally? Customers, employees and the

public will all have perceptions of your company. How will HR help create the desired picture?

 What level of service do you provide to employees and the company? Don’t be vague; define what will make your

service extraordinary.

 What kind of relationships will your HR function maintain with customers? Every company function is in

partnership with its customers. When you succeed, so do they.

 What underlying philosophies or values guided your responses to the previous questions? Some mission

statements choose to list these separately (as core values or vision). Writing them down clarifies the “why” behind

your mission.

 Does your HR function’s mission statement describe and support what your company will do and why it will do it

(the company’s core values)?

There is a minimum requirement of 500 words for this assignment. The paper must be in APA format (See pages 13 – 15

in the Citation Guide). Any sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted

material must have accompanying citations in APA format.

Information about accessing the grading rubric for this assignment is provided below.

Identify and explain what are potential biases that might impair the objectivity of your evaluation of the factors? -Include the factors of the case, as well as, factors “at-large”.

Do You Upgrade Operations or Maintain the Status Quo?

Case Overview:

You are the operations manager for a manufacturing company that makes a medical device.  Business has been growing tremendously and after exhaustive research you discover new technology that has become available that can improve the quality of your product and reduce production time.  Medical devices have the highest quality requirements and this technology could help you reduce the number of defects in manufacturing.  The technology can also reduce manufacturing lead-time which is fantastic because you have a substantial backlog of orders.  Your continuous growing of manufacturing lead-times could result in the risk of losing your client orders.  Your loyal clients have been patient with you as your lead-times have been extended over the last several months, but you don’t know how much longer they will be willing to put up with the delays.

By all accounts, the benefits of the technology appear to be a “no brainer” because reduced lead-times and increased quality have a direct positive impact on company profits.  Which is not only great for the company, but will also have a positive impact on your own personal compensation.  Your hesitation comes in the following: making the switch to the new technology will require the factory to shut down production for at least two weeks.  This means you will have to extend the lead-time on your current backlog before you can reduce it.  You will also have to convince the company president that the multi-million-dollar investment in the technology will be worthwhile when you realize the cost savings, reduced lead time, and hopefully increased business over the coming years.  If for any reason, the adoption of the technology was to be a failure, you’re pretty sure that you would lose your job.  Finally, adopting the new technology would result in a substantial number of layoffs (likely 10-15% over the next year).  Your company has had very low turnover and most of the manufacturing employees have been with the company since the company started about 25 years ago.  Many of these employees are older, with little formal education, and would likely face challenges in securing a new job.

You must decide, do you keep the status quo, and continue with business as usual?  Business is booming, you have a smooth operating manufacturing process in place, the president of the company is very pleased with how successfully you have been managing the plant, and your employees are happy. Or do you decide to proceed with convincing the president to purchase the new technology and upgrade the manufacturing process?

Assignment:

A) Describe the process that you would go through to make your decision.

  • Summarize the key facts of the case that you were weighing.
  • Identify decision making heuristic(s) that you would utilize in making decision.

B) Identify the potential pitfalls of over confidence?  Examine how could overconfidence impair your judgment.  –Explain specifically within the confines of the factors of this case.

C) Identify and explain what are potential biases that might impair the objectivity of your evaluation of the factors? -Include the factors of the case, as well as, factors “at-large”.

D) Discuss how blindness and bounded awareness pose challenges in making an objective decision.

E) Summarize your decision.  Explain how and why you made this decision.  Is your decision in line with the examination above or did you rely on personal “gut” instincts, affective/emotions, personal relationships, or personal values and Faith?

Submission should be in essay form and adhere to APA style requirements.  Be sure to use headings within the essay that align with addressing the above requirements of the assignment.  Support assertions with at least the text, additional resources are encouraged.

Unit 2: Your Trip Itinerary  & Journal Reflection Submitting a website url, a media recording, or a file upload

Introduction

The visual elements are the building blocks that artists use. When thinking about a work of art, thinking about each one of these things, and how the artist in question uses them and what that seems to express, is a good place to start. As you explore the visual elements of art, you will begin noticing them all around you and how they affect your visual environment each day.

What were his or her influences? For example, you may wish to consider life events, political or historical events, artistic training, and even psychological factors. How did these influence his or her work?

Life and Works Research Project (Week 8)

Research Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s life and work using the Internet, the University library, or other sources.

Create presentation of at least 20 slides that analyzes the life and art of your selected artist or architect.

Note: You may use PowerPoint, Prezi, or another format. If you choose to upload your presentation, remember that the maximum file size is 100MB. It is strongly encouraged that you host your presentation online and provide a direct link.

Consider addressing the following questions:

  • Why did you select this artist or architect?
  • What were his or her influences? For example, you may wish to consider life events, political or historical events, artistic training, and even psychological factors. How did these influence his or her work?
  • What were his or her most notable or important works? Why were they influential? Are they still relevant? What was his or her motivation in creating them?
  • How successful was he or she financially and in terms of critical recognition? What might account for this success (or lack thereof)?

Include a title slide and a References slide in your presentation.

Format citations and references consistent with APA guidelines.

Create your own original work of art in the style of, or inspired by, your chosen artist or architect. You may use any medium you choose as long as you are able to provide an image or video of your creation and upload it.  Note:  Your original work must have an association with the artist or architect you selected for this assignment.  Your original art does not require a massive effort.  If you selected an artist, a very simple sketch in the style of the artist is all that is required.  If you selected an architect, a sketch of a detail of one of the architect’s buildings would be sufficient.  As an alternative, a model can be constructed of a detail of the building using very simple materials such as cardboard.

Explain your own motivation behind your work of art and how it relates to your selected artist.

Write an analysis of the poem with a special emphasis on its historical background and Elizabeth Browning’s life story (a historical or biographical approach).

Literary Criticism This Task has Part A – Part F which is in the attached file.

New Criticism was a school of literary criticism that emerged in the mid-twentieth century. It rejected the traditional critical view that literature should be studied in the context of the author’s life, views, and purpose. Instead, New Critics such as John Crowe Ransom and William K. Wimsatt stated that a work of literature must be appreciated for its own sake, independent of its author’s life or purpose and the reader’s biases and emotional response. Ransom’s publication of his book The New Criticism in 1941 marked the start of this literary school of thought. In this task, you’ll analyze a poem using three different approaches: biographical, New Criticism, and emotional. Later, you will critique your own analysis. You can use the following resources to complete this activity: how Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s life story influenced interpretations of Sonnets from the Portuguese for many years a short biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning You can refer to this analysis of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” as a sample to guide your response. The analysis demonstrates the kind of information you can include for each of the three analyses, although it applies to a very different kind of text than the Barrett Browning poem you will analyze.

Part A Read Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s famous Sonnet 43.

Part A Write an analysis of the poem with a special emphasis on its historical background and Elizabeth Browning’s life story (a historical or biographical approach).

What is each piece of writing you’ve examined arguing for or recommending? What is the “main point” of each piece you read within this category?

Choose another one of the four “categories” for this week’s readings (Native Americans; Democracy, Government, and Individualism or Race and Slavery). You may not write about the same category you chose for Journal #4; if you write about the same topic twice, your Journal #5 entry will not earn credit. Read each text in your chosen category carefully, and watch the Optional Crash Course Video associated with that category.

Then, in a journal entry of at least one full page (not less than 250 words), respond to most of the following prompts and questions:

  • What is each piece of writing you’ve examined arguing for or recommending? What is the “main point” of each piece you read within this category?
  • Do any or all of the assigned readings seem to be in conversation with one another? Are they discussing the same issues? Do they mention one another at all? Did the writers know one-another? (Just discuss any connection you see between the texts in your chosen category.)
  • How do the different writings compare to one another? Do they all agree or are there variations? What are those variations and why do you think they exist?
  • Do any of the pieces in your chosen category seem out of place? If so, what category could those out of place pieces belong to instead? Or do they not seem to fit any of this week’s categories? Explain your answer.
  • Which argument is strongest? Which is weakest? What specific details helped you determine the strength or weakness of each argument?

Identify and discuss key issues in benefit planning, design, and administration. Be certain to discuss the four major administrative issues that arise on setting up a benefit package.Your response should be at least 300 words in length

How does the capitation model of reimbursement work? Do physicians generally prefer one model over the other? Why or why not?

Risk-Based Reimbursement

For your Dropbox assignment, a primary care physician is often reimbursed by Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) via capitation, fee-for-service, relative value scale, or salary. Capitation is considered as a risk based compensation.

In an effort to understand the intricacies involved with physician reimbursement, particularly in an era of health care reform, identify and interview an expert in the field, such as:

  • Hospital Administrator
  • Managed Care Organization (MCO) executive
  • Health care Consultant
  • Legal Professional

Assumption: MCOs use risk-based reimbursement for primary care physicians.

Ask the following questions in the interview:

  • What kind of risk do the MCOs assess?
  • Does risk-based compensation limit the freedom of primary care physicians in any way in terms of patient care? Why or why not?
  • How does the capitation model of reimbursement work? Do physicians generally prefer one model over the other? Why or why not?
  • Why do HMOs prefer the prepaid, monthly premium?
  • Is pay-for-performance a better model than existing models of compensation? Are there limitations to it as well?

Feel free to add additional follow-up questions for depth and clarification as you see fit.

Create a 4- to 5-page report in Microsoft Word document, analyzing the responses provided (which should be included as part of the report) using the evidence from the literature to help support or refute the responses provided.

Support your responses with examples.

Describe how process innovation, risk taking, health policy analysis, and governance “sense-making” provide balance for stakeholders.

Maintaining the Loyalty of Stakeholders

To maintain political, governmental, staff, and patient loyalty, the healthcare organization must provide a sense of organizational stability and view of the legislative landscape. In Chapters 14 and 15 we have researched and investigated the need to align both public opinion with staff trust. The political landscape is the basis for healthcare policy, guidance, state, local, and community support (both fiscal and legal) engaging in political trade-offs to stabilize the healthcare industry (such as in the cost, pharmaceuticals, insurance premiums, and organizational ROI in the healthcare industry). Healthcare organizations must provide the necessary guidance and advocacy for stakeholders in the setting of both state and federal legislature as a voice of reason, authority, and integrity. Provide information on the following:

  • Research a policy associated with the Affordable Care Act in your home state or another state that may affect healthcare reform and/or the way health care is provided in the chosen state.
  • Describe the policy and who wrote and/or promoted the policy legislature (provide statistical data).
  • What are the trade-offs offered to bring balance to the healthcare stakeholders?
  • What role have public perception and disinterestedness played in the valuation of healthcare performance?
  • Describe how process innovation, risk taking, health policy analysis, and governance “sense-making” provide balance for stakeholders.

Your paper

  • Must be 4 to 6 double-spaced pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

  1. Choose two business leaders who have held CEO positions in Fortune 500 companies – one who is presently leading a company and another who has led within the past 20 years. They may or may not have led the same company.
  2. Develop a profile of each of the leaders using the leadership theories studied in class and those found through external research. What type of leaders were they? What was their leadership style?
  3. Research the performance of their respective companies during the time they were leading. Based on your analysis, were they effective leaders? Why or why not?
  4. Compare and contrast the two leaders – do you believe one was more effective than the other? Why or why not?
  5. Based on your research, do you feel the leadership styles required to effectively lead a Fortune 500 company have changed in recent years? Why or why not?
  6. Assess your own leadership style. Do you believe you have what it takes to lead a Fortune 500 Company?

Guidelines

  • Your paper should be a maximum of 8 pages double-spaced in 12-point font (not including cover page and references). For papers longer than 8 pages, the additional pages will not be considered in grading.
