critically analyse, in the context of the framework of relevant theories and research, current and projected issues which impact on organisational leadership and organisational success.

Learning Journal: Leadership Challenges

This task requires you to address 3 out of 5 leadership challenges raised in topics 1 to 5.

These challenges are posed within the subject topics.  You will be able to practice these activities in the discussion forum for the relevant week. Feedback on your contributions will be provided within the relevant discussion forum.

Select any 3 out of 5 challenges to present for your assessment. You would be expected to improve your original post by reading through all posts made (collaborative learning) and doing some additional research. Use real world examples of leaders and their organisations to support arguments for each challenge.

Submit a complete package of your work through Turnitin by the due date.

Here are your guidelines for completing this assessment task.

Each leadership challenge activity (10 marks each, total 30 marks)

Each leadership challenge has a question for you to address. Your response to the challenge must be substantial, demonstrating that you can apply knowledge from the topic in a critical way. There isn’t usually one correct answer to these challenges; hence, the scope for critical thought. The maximum word count for each leadership challenge response is 500 words +/- 10%.

References are required: citations within the body of the text, and a reference list. At least three professional or academic references must be included at the end of each leadership challenge addressed.

If you have taken the time to review Herzberg’s work, you may have learned that people accept a job and stay on the job for different motivational reasons.  Job satisfaction is achieved through what Herzberg would categorize as motivational factors (personal growth; responsibility; the work itself; opportunities for achievement, advancement, recognition; and/or to make a positive difference) rather than hygiene factors (status, salary, job security, types of supervision, etc.).

Using at least three comparison web examples from the industry you used in your “Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory” discussion post this week, delineate a creative employee benefits plan designed to keep your best employees satisfied and motivated.  Remember to include all of the links as well as references from the course text and other sources to support your rationale.

Unit IV Article Review  Student will select an article from a peer-reviewed, scholarly article that discusses the legal aspects of education of students in an emergency medical program. Use the databases within the CSU Online Library or another source that contains peer-reviewed, scholarly articles. The purpose of this activity is for you to practice reviewing articles that contribute to the industry. The authors of these articles are researchers and professionals that have shared or experimented with ideas that demonstrate potential to improve the industry. As a professional in the industry, it is in your best interest to review the literature and trends within it. Doing so provides you with the opportunity to read about what has been successful and how. Plus, it allows you to analyze the ideas that were unsuccessful, how you can improve them, or at least avoid repeating the mistakes of others. Use these skills to contribute to research papers and other scholarly writing in the future.  As you read the article, consider the following questions: How could the topic of this article apply to your personal or professional life? How could it apply to an organization you have observed?  Use the following guidelines to select an article:   Articles are from reliable sources/journals   They are related to the legal aspects of educating students in an emergency medical program.  They are not older than five years.  Articles should be at least ten pages.  Use the following guidelines to prepare your article review:   Your article review should be at least two pages.  It should identify the main topic/question.  It should identify the author’s intended audience.  It should include a one page summary of the article.  Think critically about the article, and discuss how it applies to this course for page two.  Format your article review using APA Style. Execute a backup job that runs every night at 1 a.m. Create user accounts on a system that is typically performed by a person.

Big Data Datacenters is impressed with your overall work and wants to start finalizing the strategy for using Perl in its organization. First of all, it is looking for a single, cohesive document that details your work so far. Update the document based on any past instructor feedback, and make improvements as necessary.

A topic that is getting some discussion lately is that of a graphical user interface (GUI) approach versus a scripting approach. Include in your document an analysis on these two approaches with consideration given to the following:

  • Discuss the strengths and weakness of a GUI and a scripting approach.
  • Should a combined approach be considered that uses both GUIs and scripts?
  • Give your recommendations for the following use cases. Which approach would you select and why?
    • Execute a backup job that runs every night at 1 a.m.
    • Create user accounts on a system that is typically performed by a person.
    • Execute a job that runs every 5 minutes and that checks for disk free space and sends an alert if the available disk space is less than 10%.The strategy for using Perl at Big Data Datacenters is almost complete, with the exception of one last-minute requirement. The team has identified a requirement to parse data so that it can be consumed into a centralized relational database management system (RDBMS). Again, they are looking to you for answers, and they would like you to provide sample Perl scripts that show the following:
      • Show how the Split function can be used.
      • Show how the Chomp function can be used.
      • Show how a for loop can be used in Perl.
      • Show 2 additional functions of your choosing that can be used to parse data in Perl.

For each sample code, provide some brief commentary on how the functions are being used to parse data.

Because this is your final presentation, take some time to review your final submission. This is a culmination of all of your previous work, including the Perl parsing functions. You are up for a big promotion based your final submission, and you want to make sure that you are submitting your best work.

What are the communication differences between a self-managed team and a traditional hierarchy?

Many companies have been moving toward organizing as self-managed teams. Changes in worker demographics and experience, types of organizations, technology, and new ways of considering leadership make self-managed teams an effective choice for many organizations. As you read in the articles in this week’s Learning Resources, self-managed teams present many opportunities, as well as many challenges, within organizations.

Think about the levels of communication within organizations—both in a more traditional setting and one in which teams are self-managed.

Response in which you address the following questions:

  • What are the communication differences between a self-managed team and a traditional hierarchy? Specifically address strategies for offering critiques, support, or praise, and managing conflict in a self-managed team.
  • How are the standards and norms set in a self-managed team? How are those standards communicated? What might be some challenges that arise? (For example, employees can leave any time after 4:30; most stay until 7:00; one stays until 4:30.)
  • Chaneski describes the stages through which groups or teams tend to develop. What unique experiences do you think self-managed teams have as they develop? Do they follow the standard pattern of development? Explain your reasoning.
  • Have you worked on a self-managed team? What challenges did you face? What opportunities were unique to working on this kind of team? How was the experience different from times you have worked on traditional teams? If you have never worked on a self-managed team, think of a time you worked on a traditional team. How might the experience have been different if it had been self-managed? How might the experience have been more challenging? More rewarding?
  • Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Evidence and a strong argument to back up your thesis. I expect external academic sources to be used, two or three sources should suffice. Further referencing from non-academic sources may support your paper but will not count towards the peer-reviewed source expectation

The final assignment for the course will test your knowledge on one particular area of study in the field of Organizational Behaviour. The topics to choose from are:

  Working in teams

  Bias in the workplace

  Conflict resolution

  Performance feedback

  Organizational culture

  Facilitating creativity

  Decision making obstacles

  Communication in organizations

  Job and organizational design

  Contemporary work environments

If you would like to use a different topic, you must request approval from me first. You are expected to make an argument on the topic and back it up with strong sources. Make it convincing and make it stand up to scrutiny. The argument must not be something as simple as ethics in organizations are important. Make it more specific, answer a question you find interesting. And then convince me that your argument is true utilizing knowledge gained in the course.

Your paper must include:

1)  Introduction where you will introduce to topic, define any terms, and provide your thesis or

argument (for example: expending resources on conflict resolution tools in the workplace is not

a valuable use of money)

2)  Evidence and a strong argument to back up your thesis. I expect external academic sources to

be used, two or three sources should suffice. Further referencing from non-academic sources
