1. The ability to reduce downtime is very crucial for all organizations.  As we’ve been discussing, reduced downtime is one of the key benefits of using virtual technology.  There is also a move to virtualizing the end user workstation.  It’s interesting that in the past, there use to be organizations that implored the use of dumb terminals that connected back to a central system where data was kept.  Over the years, dumb terminals were slowly replaced with fully capable PCs that would connect back to a server via client software for data.  Now, the idea of dumb terminals seems to be making a comeback.  What are your thoughts on this idea?  If your organization is in the midst or has implemented a similar concept of virtual desktops, Why did you organization choose to use virtual desktop it’s users?

2.As was briefly discussed last week, virtualizing server installations has become the new norm or expectation in order to minimize on server hardware purchase needs, saving energy, maximizing the use of existing server hardware resources and increase provisioning and service uptimes.  Starting with Windows Server 2008, Microsoft added features to support virtualization and in Windows Server 2012, Microsoft added some additional features to administrating virtualized environments.  Microsoft’s virtualization technology is called HyperVisor.  HyperVisor competes with other well know production virtualization technologies such as VMWare ESX and vSphere.  What has Microsoft improved in Windows Server 2012 when it comes to provisioning and administrating a virtualized environment?

3.As discussed last week, it’s important to configure storage in the proper format as well as making sure sufficient storage is allotted for the intended purpose of the associated system or services.  Virtual storage configured within Microsoft Windows Servers can be configure to grow automatically with the needs of the system.  Setting up the server like this can come at a performance cost.  Many System Administrators who manage virtualized environments prefer to increase storage needs as it is deemed necessary.  In what situation would it be advantageous to automate the increase of storage for virtualized systems?

4.

As with a physical server installation, virtual servers also have to be able to communicate with other systems or clients in order to provide the needed data.  Hyper-V provides a few different virtual network types that can be configured.  Below are 3 examples:

External Virtual Network -Virtual machines connected to an external virtual network are given access to the external network via a physical network adapter installed in the host system.

Internal Virtual Network – Virtual machines connected to an internal virtual network have access to both the parent partition and other virtual machines attached to the same virtual network.

Private Virtual Network – Virtual machines connected to a private virtual network have access only to other virtual machines attached to the same virtual network.

Describe a scenario where a private virtual network would be beneficial for a virtual server.

5.Discuss one or two key competitors of Microsoft’s Hyper-V® product. What are the pros and cons of each product?

6.Discuss one or two key competitors of Microsoft’s Hyper-V® product. What are the pros and cons of each product?

7.Discuss the flexibility of virtual networking and how it can aid administrators in providing better security for their systems.

8.

One of the main tools used for remote administration in Windows Server 2012 is Server Manager.  Server Manager in Windows Server 2012 allows administrators to add servers connected to the network and manage them remotely.  However, there are some limitations with utilizing this solution.  One of the limitations is that administrators cannot install roles or features on more than one server at a time.  They must be installed on each server individually.  Also, if there are workgroup servers they can be added, but the authentication has to be changed or the administrator cannot manage them.  Another feature within Server Manager is using server groups.  An administrator can use server groups to group servers by location or function to keep things better organized.  However, with server groups administrators still do not have the ability to add features or roles to an entire list.  They must be applied to each server individually.  How best can Server Manager be integrated with other tools for remote management?

Can you relate to Melanie’s story in any way, or do you know anyone else who is having a similar experience?

Case 1

Melanie was really looking forward to college because she thought she would have freedom to select the courses she wanted and the opportunity to get into the major of her choice (computer science). However, she is shocked and disappointed with her first-term schedule of classes because it consists mostly of required general education courses that seem totally unrelated to her major. She is also frustrated because some of these courses are about subjects she already took in high school (English, history, and biology). She’s beginning to think she would be better off quitting college and going to a technical school for a year or two so she can get right into computer science and immediately begin acquiring the skills she will need to work in the computer industry.

Reflection Questions

  1. If Melanie decides to get a technical certificate and not pursue a college degree, how do you see it affecting her future:
  2. Do you see any way Melanie might strike a balance between pursuing her career interest and obtaining her college degree so that she could work toward achieving both goals at the same time?
  3. Can you relate to Melanie’s story in any way, or do you know anyone else who is having a similar experience?

Discuss why the business decision is good or not good for business. Define the term “good” for the purpose of this situation.

Purpose of Assignment

For this assignment, the student will create an argumentative essay explaining what makes a good business decision. This allows students to use critical thinking in their research to identify the importance of deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning.

Assignment Steps

Review the “Writing Argumentative Essays” section in Ch. 3 of Critical Thinking.

Write a 1,050-word argumentative essay on your approved business decision including the following:

  • Discuss why the business decision is good or not good for business.
  • Define the term “good” for the purpose of this situation.
  • Identify the premise and conclusion by placing a number in bold at the beginning of the sentence with the word premise or conclusion. For example: (1, Premise), (2, Premise), (1, Conclusion), (2, Conclusion).
    • Sentences labeled as “1, premise” are premises for the sentence labeled as “1, conclusion.”
    • All premises should be labeled for each conclusion in the article. If a sentence is a conclusion and a premise for another conclusion, place two labels.
    • At the end of the paper, identify one example of how you used deductive reasoning and one example of how you used inductive reasoning.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines. Use a minimum of 2 credible scholarly sources. A grade of zero will be issued for not applying APA style or for not using a minimum of 2 credible scholarly sources. No “wiki” site is considered credible for academic work.

Metropolitan Bakery

>> I’ve run a pastry shop at a local Philadelphia restaurant for about eight years where I met my now-business partner, Wendy Bourne [assumed spelling]. I was the pastry chef and she was the managing partner of the restaurant. My name is James Faritch [assumed spelling] and I am co-owner of Metropolitan Bakery. I’ve worked and learning from European [inaudible] program trained chefs. Very, very demanding. Very strict and very tough. You know, something that you would make would be just tossed into the trash can because it was wrong. So I learned early on to fill the tough skin. That said, I worked in hotels and restaurants under young American chefs that were more coddling and nurturing.>> I think that is the sort of stereotypical chef. You know, people throwing things and whatever. In the long run, I don’t think that’s at all the way you get people to work. I’m Wendy Smith Bourne, co-owner of Metropolitan Bakery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you want people to be able to work autonomously and for the kitchen to operate in your absence and your values to be translated on a daily basis, you can’t treat people that way because first of all, when you’re screaming and yelling, you’re not talking from a very deep place. You’re talking off the top of your head. And so nobody really knows what’s up and all it does is keep people off base and not particularly engaged in producing good work.[ Background speech ]>> To not call or show up for your scheduled shift. That’s it. Yeah. I used to tolerate it until now. You don’t call, you don’t show, you do not care. Bye.>> We are completely clear about our expectations on punctuality, showing up, appearance. So clear. And the biggest one is being rude to a customer. Totally, absolutely 100 percent not acceptable. So we have a, we have a typical performance appraisal form that you would see anywhere, but tailored to our business.>> And they’re done on a three month basis, six month basis, and then one year. When a person is first hired, they go through a two week training period and then we’ll have to sit down and we’ll give them feedback. Sometimes it’s keeping your job. Especially for a new hire. And then particularly for somebody who has been here for awhile, maybe has lost interest or their passion has waned and then so then it comes, you know, your job is on the line.>> The dance that you dance in a small business is how to become systems oriented without killing the passion. So there are two ways I think about performance appraisals. Do I really like them? I don’t really actually like them. I think that if you meet with somebody once a year, twice a year, and then drop the bomb either good or bad, drop the bomb that it’s bad or give it glowing, it doesn’t always get at what you want to get at when you’re in a business like this. And in this business, our primary commodity is relationships and engaging a customer. And to talk to somebody twice a year about that is really not going to get us very far. Both James and I are very hands on. We’re both involved in the business daily and in production here in the retail and business side, so we have lots of contact with people, so we don’t have to do everything with pieces of paper and formal evaluations because we can give feedback right on the spot. I’d rather reward the behavior and what I see than wait and save it up for a big evaluation. That only makes people anxious and stressed out, and when you have people staying for an average of six to nine months, you have to wonder what the value of a six month evaluation is. You’re better off giving them feedback along the way, and that in turn gives them the opportunity to give you feedback. If they want to stay or move to a different job, they can do it at that point.>> Yeah, I mean it can go both ways, absolutely. Sometimes people just burn out and it is time for them to move on and sometimes somebody that has been here for a long time should be here.>> For the actual associates, I feel that performance evaluations, if we’re at a point where somebody would like to have a raise and maybe we’re kind of not on the same wavelength about that, we can go through a more complete and thorough process and they can, we can see why we’re kind of disconnected on that.>> You know, some people are very responsive to feedback, and so then I have had, you know, many cases of success and that’s why the evaluations are important and that’s why I do them. On the other hand, there are people that just don’t want to hear it.>> You know, as I’ve been in the business longer, there are certain things that I feel like I really understand better and so if I feel that somebody is impervious to feedback, then I just cut my losses. Because it’s, it’s ultimately all those relationships I just talked about with the customer — that’s what keeps us in business. And it’s the customer telling another customer, prospective customer, about us that keeps us in business. You know, we’re not spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising and on commercials, so we need the good vibe out on the street. So I can’t risk somebody ruining that.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7FhcvoVK8s

write a brief annotation of that source.  The annotation should describe the main ideas covered in the source as well as an evaluation by you for the source’s usefulness for your project.

Annotated Bibliography

You will submit an annotated bibliography for 2 of your sources for the week 7 paper.  Each source will have the following:

1.  The model citation in your citation style

2.  The correct citation entry with your source information filled in

3. Your annotation which is made of a paragraph or two telling the reader about the source (it’s authority, summary, concerns, and how its information is valuable to your paper; show me you have read it and analyzed it).

4.  Do not use personal pronouns such as “I,” “me,” or “my.”  This is to be completed in formal tone with proper formatting to your chosen style (ex: MLA, APA, etc).

5.  One (1) of the sources should be a peer-reviewed piece from a journal in the APUS Library.

To help you gather sources, review the assignment description for the week 7 analysis paper.  Pay special attention to the article linked there and the steps for identifying your problem. Here is the link to the article: “Looking for Trouble: Finding Your Way into a Writing Assignment.” This piece shows how to write about solving a problem, using the steps of noticing, articulating, posing questions, and identifying what is at stake.

After you have identified your problem, you can start choosing your sources and build an annotated bibliography.

Here are the steps you will take to build your annotated bibliography:

  • First, determine what kind of source you are using. Is it a book? Journal article? Blog? Using one of the citation guides in the APUS Library, find the model that matches your source. Hint: if you are looking at your source on your computer, you will go to the category of electronic sources to start looking.
  • Copy that model and paste it into your bibliography.

Here’s a step by step to help clarify how to do this:

1.  Choose your article

2.  Go to the library

3.  Choose “Resources & Services”

4.  Go to the heading Writing@APUS and choose the formatting style you are using for your papers (generally in our course it has been MLA or APA).

5.  Once you’ve selected MLA or APA you’ll choose the header that most aligns with the type of article you have and this will be under “Citation Examples.”  For example, you might choose “Books-Electronic.”

6.  Then you copy and paste the format for your citation based on what type of source you have  like so (this example is a book in MLA):

Author Last Name, First Name. Title of Book: Subtitle. Publisher, Publication Date.

  • Then put your source in the correct citation format, following the model you just copied and pasted.
  • Finally, write a brief annotation of that source.  The annotation should describe the main ideas covered in the source as well as an evaluation by you for the source’s usefulness for your project. The handout attached below has more information about what should be in the annotation.

Please be sure that one (1) of your sources is a peer-reviewed article from a journal in the APUS Library.

  • Follow the student example included below. You will see the model, the citation, and then the annotation for the source.  The rubric shown below shows that you will be graded on having the model for the citation format, so don’t forget to include it.
  • The attachment “Peer Review Defined” has helpful information from the APUS Library on peer-reviewed sources.
  • The attachment “how to” handout has some helpful tips on what to include in an annotation.
  • Submit your assignment as a Word document attached to the assignment link so it can be processed on Turnitin.

Sample Annotation.   Each of your entries should follow the format below.   Again, don’t forget the model citation (instructions above!).
