What was Park’s connection to Harlem and how might that have informed his desire to tell the story of Harlem’s gang wars? – How does the subject come across in the magazine?

Racial Bias in “Harlem Gang Leader”?

Research photographer Gordon Parks and his “Harlem Gang Leader” Life magazine story spread from 1948.  Write a minimum 5-page essay  that makes a strong argument for or against the presence of racial bias in the photo story.

– What was Park’s connection to Harlem and how might that have informed his desire to tell the story of Harlem’s gang wars?

– How does the subject come across in the magazine?

– Review the headline and captions and consider how they influence the viewer’s impression of Leonard “Red” Jackson?

– Out of hundreds of negatives that Parks presented to his editors at Life, they selected and edited 21 images to tell the story of Leonard “Red” Jackson and his friends. Why do you think they chose the photographs that they did?

– Do you think magazine editors could have biases toward certain kinds of images?

– Did the editors alter the original images for publication? If so, how? What does this do to the subject?

– Were the editorial choices and the messages they relayed in opposition with Parks’ intentions — or, even more importantly, to the truth of Jackson’s life?

– Does the published photo-essay tell a different story from Gordon Park’s larger story?

-The body of your essay will be a minimum of 5 text pages: 1″ margins, 12-point font, double-spaced

-Images will be on separate pages in the essay

-Works cited page must include a minimum of 5 sources, excluding the one that I provided above.

-All images and sources must be properly cited using MLA format.

-Plagiarism is the use of words and/or ideas from another author that you fail to cite. I have a ZERO TOLERANCE plagiarism policy and will strictly enforce the school’s academic honor code. Students who violate this policy will receive a zero on the assignment and a violation report will be filed with the Dean of Students.

Amazing People – Active Listening: A Guide

We are taught how to read and write, but not how to listen. We can enhance our relationships with others through effective listening. Here are 20 things you can do to enhance your listening skills

Leave your own concerns to one side.

You can’t focus on somebody else if you are also thinking about your problems, to do list or concerns. This leads onto

Allow yourself sufficient time.

If you have to dash off to a meeting, you will want to go at a quicker pace to suit you, not the person who you are listening to.

Talk less than you listen.

We have two ears and one mouth, so have your communication in the same proportion.

Use eye contact.

It is hard for someone to continue to talk with someone who is not looking at them.

Show some non-verbal behavior.

Make use of nods of the heads and uh-hums etc. All of these encourage the other person to say more. But don’t just use them ad hoc when you are not really listening. It devalues them.

Demonstrate rapport.

When you are truly listening and interested in the other person your body language will be congruent. There is a matching of posture, tone of voice etc. You can help by leaning forward in your chair, or by tilting your head to the side.

Summarize what the person has said

So they know you have heard them. This can be a good way to move the person for-ward. This is reflecting back content.

Reflect back feeling

Do you get a feeling that the person is sad, angry, etc.? Let them know. “You sound a bit sad to me?”

Don’t pretend

If your attention has wandered, be honest. Ask the person to repeat what they have said, rather than to guess. Your honesty will be appreciated.

Be patient

Sometimes people will be muddled, or verbose. You can help them to tell their story, but don’t rush them at apace too quick for them.

Avoid “Me too” comments

If you are paying attention to the other person and wanting to help them, avoid discussing how it affects you. Think! Will this help the other person? If not, leave it to another time. You risk hijacking the conversation.

Don’t get defensive

If you are being given some feedback, listen to what the person is saying. Don’t interrupt with reasons untilyou are very clear what the person is saying. They may have some helpful comments to make that you will miss if you interrupt their flow.

Don’t formulate a response until the other person has finished speaking.

You will miss out on some of the things they say.

If there is a silence, don’t rush to fill it.

Wait twice as long as feels comfortable for you. Give the other person time to think.

Put yourself in their shoes.

Don’t criticize or give advice, don’t rush to fix it. See the issue from their perspective.

Be aware of your prejudices.

Are there certain words (vulgar language) or people (background) that “get under your skin”? Think about what you can do to be less judge-mental. Perhaps you could say that for the next 20 minutes you will concentrate on them and let e.g. their views on immigrants wash over you.

If you are listening to someone via a telephone you need to try even harder to demonstrate active listening skills

Make sure you are not typing, turning pages of a magazine, shuffling papers etc. All these things demonstrate that you are only half listening.

Eliminate external distraction.

If you are in a location, which is hot, cold, noisy or uncomfortable, look to move to a different place. You can’t concentrate if you are in a situation, which demands a lot of your attention.

Seek feedback on your own performance

You can improve your skills in this area through getting feedback from other people. Ask people to tell you if they felt heard. Seek out ways you can improve. It will not only be helpful with that person next time, but also when you are actively listening to other people.

Pay attention to other people’s listening skills.

Notice in what ways other people make you feel listened to, and those people who don’t. It will help you to choose how you can develop further.

1. What is the approximate time period for the Bebop era as given in the reading? (Years, not “3am ‘til 6am”.) 1pt

2. It is said that bebop developed in after-hours jam sessions. What two clubs are mentioned in the reading as places where bebop was “born”?

3. What effect did a musician’s union strike and subsequent recording ban have on the public’s awareness of the development of the bebop style?

4. Three people are generally mentioned as the main characters in the development (or at least popularization) of bebop.  Name them and the instrument they played.

5. Describe the difference between a typical bebop group and a typical swing band. Size, audience, jazz values, amount of improvisation within a performance…etc.

write a 750-word paper about, and that will fit into one of the aforementioned categories.

Student Journal of Race & Gender in Media (SJRGM)

This semester one of your assignments is to write a 750-word research article for the Student Journal of Race & Gender in Media (SJRGM). The journal is published twice yearly, once in the summer and once in the winter, and is hosted at UnderstandMedia.com. This is an amazing opportunity for you to practice your writing, research, and analysis skills on something that will actually be published in a media journal. The journal is available free of charge online, so not only can you send a link to your article to your friends and family, but you will also be discovered and cited by academic researchers working on new work. Past students have listed their writing credit on their resumes and have used their articles as writing samples to get into a four-year university. In addition, the skills you learn in this assignment will serve you well during your academic and professional careers.

Your journal article will be written in two phases: first, you will begin your research and compose a rough draft OUTLINE of your article. This version of your article will be well researched, well organized, and will include at least three citations in MLA format. The rough draft outline is due in Week 8 (the week of our midterm). I will review your rough draft outline and offer editorial suggestions. You will then use my notes to write a brilliant final draft. The final draft will be due in Week 16 (the week of our final).

This issue of the Journal will have the theme, “Race & Gender in 2020 America,” and is inspired by the current state of race relations and gender roles in our country today. We have all seen Donald Trump make issues of race, nationality, and gender for us to think over and debate. We have experienced Charlottesville, Black Lives Matter, George Floyd’s death, and the consequent uprisings, the Google employee memo on gender, #MeToo, #TimesUp, etc. In 2020 one thing is clear: race and gender are at the forefront of our national conversation.

With this in mind, here are some topics that fit the theme and which you are welcome to discuss:

Black Lives Matter.

Muslims, Syrian refugees, and terrorism

Gender and gender bias

Sexual harassment and assault against women

LatinXs, and specifically Mexican-Americans

White America, White Nationalists, and Neo-Nazis

The role of 24/7 news media (CNN, MSNBC, Fox) in our discussion of these issues

Diversity (or lack of diversity) in today’s media and how this affects how we see the world

The use of fear and sensationalism in politics

These are just SOME ideas that should help you decide what you’ll write about, but you’re welcome to come up with your own idea as long as it fits into the theme. Remember, this is a class about MEDIA, so anything you write should be written about in that context. So for example, if you pick gender as a topic, I’ll want you to discuss the media’s role in gender equality, how women are portrayed in the media and how this shapes our opinions, or how the media portrays women who break stereotypes. These are just some suggestions.

I will NOT be assigning you a topic. You should choose a topic that interests you, that you can research and write a 750-word paper about, and that will fit into one of the aforementioned categories. You should be prepared to spend a significant amount of time thinking about, and then researching your topic. All research should come from reputable online sources and must have been published in 2020. If you are interested in writing about a topic that does not fit one of the categories above, please email me with a short summary of your proposed topic so that I may offer suggestions.

Develop a rating scale, and provide a legend that identifies the distinct performance rating definitions. There must be a minimum of three levels. (The template has three levels; however, you can add more.)

Instructions

For this assignment, determine an effective process to evaluate the performance of one of your employees. As you have determined that periodic evaluations can be more beneficial than annual evaluations, you will be evaluating the mid-level manager who you hired and who has now been on board for 6 months. Your process should include an appropriate evaluation tool and a means of providing feedback on the employee’s performance issues.

There are three parts to this project. You will begin by developing a performance review form that contains a minimum of 10 points of criteria. This template is a starting point and may be used as-is or can be modified as you wish. The template has 10 points of criteria; however, you can add more if the specifics of the position warrant you doing so.

Provide an explanation for each of the criteria. Remember, these should directly represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as well as the requirements for the position.

Develop a rating scale, and provide a legend that identifies the distinct performance rating definitions. There must be a minimum of three levels. (The template has three levels; however, you can add more.)

Next, you will fill out your newly created form to evaluate the mid-level manager. This is, of course, based on the input of the immediate supervisor and your own assessment.

Evaluate each criteria, and include a minimum of three criteria where the employee does not meet performance expectations.

Summarize the employee performance appraisal in the comments section.

Identify the employee’s strengths and weaknesses.

Offer feedback and coaching on ways that the employee can improve his or her performance.

Finally, you will write a one-page synopsis in which you explain the value of your evaluation process and a new tool to your leadership team. Include the information below:

o    how the changes will benefit the organization,

o    how equal employment opportunity laws were considered, and

o    strategies that leaders can use to address unmet employee performance expectations.

Include two sources to support your explanation.

The template is only a guideline. You are encouraged to modify it as you wish, as long as it still meets all of the above-listed requirements. Combine your completed template and the one-page synopsis into one document (.doc or .pdf) to upload in Blackboard. Ensure that you include a title page. Adhere to APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.
