Develop a 10- to12- slide PowerPoint Presentation designed for training the staff at a local high school. The PowerPoint Presentation should focus on strategies that promote communication skills among adolescents.

Students are encouraged to approach the assignment creatively, adding graphics, visuals, charts and/or graphs to their work. Slides should be designed to address the selected topic clearly and concisely.  Each slide should be developed with professional presentation style (e.g., bulleted items in brief statements rather than complete sentences). Notes should complement the slides and provide details useful to the speaker if an oral presentation were to be given.

Creating the PowerPoint Presentation

The PowerPoint Presentation:

  1. Must be 10 to 12 slides, and formatted according to APA style as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center.
  2. Must include a title slide with the following:
    1. Title of the training
    2. Student’s name
    3. Course name and number
    4. Instructor’s name
    5. Date submitted
  3. Must present a thesis statement regarding why social skills training would be appropriate for adolescents.
  4. Must explain different types of communication (e.g., aggressive and assertive).
  5. Must share four strategies on how adolescents could improve their communication skills.
  6. Must create at least three hypothetical scenarios of problems that adolescents might encounter, including one that involves cultural/ethnic issues. The scenarios should show how adolescents could use improved communication skills to solve these problems.
  7. Must develop conclusions that reiterate the opening thesis statement, include a summary of the social skills training discussed, and offer evidence of its effectiveness.
  8. Must use at least four scholarly sources (in addition to the course text), including a minimum of two from the Ashford Online Library. References are to be provided as needed within the slides.
  9. Must include a separate reference slide, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

· Select a group such as intersex, transgender, genderqueer, or a third gender with which you are not familiar (or the one you know the least about) and search for interviews, personal narratives, blogs, or any other form of information related to this specific population.

When you meet someone new, your brain automatically uses schemas to identify characteristics or behavior that would allow you to classify the person into a group that you may already know. While this is an adaptive and helpful strategy that the human brain possesses, when taken to an extreme, it could lead to the formation of unhelpful or incorrect stereotypes about groups. Take a moment and consider what you already know about intersex, transgender, or other gender variant groups from personal experience, academic or professional work, or influences such as the media. Is your knowledge sufficient to bring sensitivity to work with members of gender variant populations?

In order to bring full sensitivity and awareness to bear on interacting with members of a particular group, humans must bring conscious thought to their perceptions, in addition to the automatic thinking that occurs. In other words, acknowledge commonalities related to gender variance, but also research information on groups, take the time to become aware of individual differences, and always seek to bring cultural sensitivity to your professional work.

For this Discussion, you will research a specific gender variant group of your choice and explain strategies that could be used to increase sensitivity toward members of the group. Remember that, just as biological and psychological diversity exists in other facets of human life (e.g., cognition, personality), so too does it exist in sexuality and gender.

To prepare

· Select a group such as intersex, transgender, genderqueer, or a third gender with which you are not familiar (or the one you know the least about) and search for interviews, personal narratives, blogs, or any other form of information related to this specific population.

By Day 3

Post a description of the group or population you selected. Describe how your impressions, feelings or perspectives changed about this group as you researched the group. Looking forward, what strategies would you use to continue to raise your awareness and sensitivity toward this group?

Review several of your colleagues’ posts, and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week.

Week 3 – Discussion

No unread replies.No replies.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Addressing and Confronting Bias and Prejudice

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please read Chapters 8, 12, and 13 in DSM 5 Made Easy: The Clinician’s Guide to Diagnosis; Chapter 2 in Turning Points in Dynamic Psychotherapy: Initial Assessment, Boundaries, Money, Disruptions and Suicidal Crises; Chapter 5 in The Psychiatric Interview: Evaluation and Diagnosis; all required articles; and review the PSY645 Fictional Sociocultural Case Studies (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. document.

One of the most important aspects of developing competence in psychopathology is to be as honestly and completely aware as possible of your personal attitudes toward people who have mental health conditions. Through this awareness, we are better able to challenge our own biases and prejudicial views in order to be more open to the findings within scholarly research.

For your initial post in this discussion, choose one of the three case studies from the PSY645 Fictional Sociocultural Case Studies (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. document, and write a detailed description of your uncensored personal observation of the patient depicted. Describe at least one theoretical orientation you would use to conceptualize your view of the patient’s problem and how it may have developed. Identify the issues you might focus on in treatment with this patient. Be sure to identify within your post which of the three case studies you have chosen.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues’ posts, and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion.

Examine your colleague’s initial post, and formulate a possible response. Research a minimum of two peer-reviewed articles that support the views presented in your response. Compose a response that uses a sociocultural perspective to assess the validity of your colleague’s observation and his or her proposed direction of treatment.

Outline any biases or prejudicial views you observe in your colleague’s post which may affect their conceptualization of the patient’s problems. Remember that your colleague is being open and honest regarding his or her personal views; therefore, your task is to provide persuasive information to encourage your colleague to adopt a view that is supported by peer-reviewed literature. Pay close attention to the tone of your response to ensure your colleague will not become defensive when reading it. Be sure to use at least two peer-reviewed sources to support your statements.

Create a heading titled Conclusion: Briefly summarize the importance of the problem, how psychological theories, principles, and research may point to ways improve the problem, and the implications for a larger societal problem or problems.

Write a 6–8-page action plan to resolve issues in a case study based on evaluation of relevant psychological theory, research, principles, and standards.

When faced with a problem that involves psychology, you could merely rely on lessons drawn from your own personal experience, but of course, your education in this field has given you greatly enhanced sources of guidance.

Preparation

Return to the case study that you considered in Assessments 1 and 2.

  • Identify two or three psychological theories and principles that help to explain the reasons for the problem and point toward potential solutions for it.
  • Use the Capella University Library to locate at least three scholarly research studies in an area of psychology relevant to the problem. If you have had the opportunity to conduct or assist formal research in an academic or professional context, you may be able use the study in this assessment. However, if you wish to do so, e-mail a copy of the study to your instructor and ask for confirmation that it is appropriate for the assessment.

Instructions

Complete the following:

  • Create a title page: Write a brief title that concisely conveys the purpose of this report. It is suggested that you use the APA Paper Template, linked in the Resources under the APA Resources heading, to format your paper to format your work according to the APA manual (current edition).
  • Write an introduction: For the introduction section of your paper, include the title at the top of the first page. (In APA format, the word Introduction is not used as a heading.) Briefly summarize:
    • The case you have chosen.
    • A high-level summary of ethical and cultural issues that you identified in the case.
    • How theories and research, in general terms, help explain the problems in the case and point toward solutions.
    • How the case relates to a larger societal problem or problems.
  • Create a heading titled Case Issues: Review the case issues, including the ethical and cultural issues, in more detail.
  • Create a heading titled Theoretical Framework: Analyze how two or three psychological theories help explain the problem and point toward potential solutions. In doing so, cite relevant principles or concepts derived from these theories. For example:
    • Let us say that we are assisting an adolescent from Germany who has moved to the United States and is having a rough time adjusting to her new high school. In addition to information gathered from her, her parents, and the school, we could consider Erikson’s psychosocial theory and the stage of identity and role confusion in which adolescents search to establish their own values, beliefs, and goals. During this important time of identity development, the teen has been immersed in an entirely different culture with values and beliefs different from the one which she knows. We could consider to what extent she was mastering the stage prior to and then after the move. Based on sociocultural theory, we would enquire about the differences in culture that may be impinging on her success in interacting in her new environment. By integrating the two theories, we can get a better understanding of how her developmental stage is clashing with her sociocultural context. We might search for research on adolescent development and cross-cultural experiences to get a better understanding of what research demonstrates is effective in assisting teenagers in this position.
  • Create a heading titled Related Research: Summarize at least three research studies that pertain to the problem. A summary will provide your reader with a clear understanding of the purpose of the study, the methods, and the findings.
    • Describe the research designs and methods used in the studies.
    • Use principles of critical thinking to evaluate the quality of the research and analyze the relevance to the problem.
      • Evaluate how the research methods employed support the studies’ findings.
      • Analyze how the studies’ findings explain reasons for the problem and point toward potential solutions.
      • Analyze how the studies’ findings relate to the psychological theories you previously cited.
      • Compare findings of the studies and assess how they support or contradict each other.
      • See if any contradiction is apparent. If so, try to explain why the contradiction may have developed and which position is more credible and why.
  • Create a heading titled Action Plan: Based on your theoretical and research findings as well ethical and cultural considerations, provide an action plan with recommendations for how to resolve the problem you researched in a fair and just manner.
    • Make clear how the objectives of your plan are specific, measurable, achievable, and relevant to the problem, and the timeline for implementation should be.
    • Integrate information from your sources to support your recommendations.
  • Create a heading titled Conclusion: Briefly summarize the importance of the problem, how psychological theories, principles, and research may point to ways improve the problem, and the implications for a larger societal problem or problems.

Keep in mind throughout this assessment that while your writing must conform to APA standards, you must explain all information in a manner that can be easily understood by a nonacademic or nonscientific audience.

Refer to the Research Analysis and Action Plan Scoring Guide to ensure that you meet the grading criteria for this assessment.

Additional Requirements

Your assessment should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Written communication is well organized and free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA style: Comply with current APA style and formatting.
  • Number of resources: A minimum of three academic resources.
  • Length: 6–8 typed, double-spaced pages, excluding the cover page and references.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

In the past, a one-cause approach was more accepted to understanding psychopathological behavior. Today, it is more accepted that there are multiple causes that can explain the development of mental illness.

For this Assignment, you will compare and contrast the early ways of thinking about psychological disorders to today’s current view and explain the multi-dimensional model and the major approaches (theorized causes) of mental illness.

  1. Explain what early thoughts and beliefs existed about what caused mental illness.
  2. Describe one of the psychological traditions and how it furthered the beliefs about what causes mental illness from that of the early beliefs by the Greeks and from Religions. Select from: Freud’s theory of the unconscious, humanism, or behaviorism.
  3. Explain the idea of a multi-dimensional approach and how it differs from a single approach to understanding the major causes of mental illness.
  4. Last, referring directly to the textbook, provide an overview of the major approaches of a multi-dimensional integrated model listed in the textbook. For each major approach, include its central tenant(s) as it relates to the explanation (or cause) of mental illness. The major approaches that provide an explanation or cause for the development of mental illness are biological approach (genetics and neurological factors), psychological approach (cognitive and behavioral factors, including the unconscious), emotions approach, social and cultural approach, and the developmental approach. For example, from the biological approach, an imbalance of neurochemicals is believed to influence (or cause) behavioral changes as well as heritability.  Programs for Military Families

There are many programs for military families, but more services are necessary to truly meet the needs of military personnel, veterans, or their families. As you have learned about military culture and the needs of military personnel and their families, you may have gained insight into the types of programs that could support them. This week, you apply what you have learned about the needs of military families to your profession by designing a program relevant to those needs.

How would you begin to explore your concerns about her eating patterns, or would you? 3. What levels of care might you consider: outpatient, intensive outpatient, and/or residential?

This unit contains a Journal Entry. Please respond to the following questions in at least 250 words or one page. Write your response directly in the Journal area.

In the past few years, researchers have explored food addiction as a public health problem. Experts believe that compulsive eating can trigger the same reward areas in the brain as drug use.

Read the case study underneath the questions about Maggie and her eating disorder and respond to the following questions:

1. What are the most important concerns to focus on first as her counselor?

2. How would you begin to explore your concerns about her eating patterns, or would you?

3. What levels of care might you consider: outpatient, intensive outpatient, and/or residential?

4. How would you discuss the addictive nature of her eating patterns? Or, would you mention addiction?

Case Study Maggie is an 18-year-old college freshman. During high school, she was an honor roll student and athlete, participating on the soccer and swim teams. Maggie is very driven to succeed at college, and is feeling the strains of being in a new place with high academic standards. She began to gravitate to comforting favorite foods in the cafeteria, such as pizza, French fries, and soft serve ice cream. She soon began to notice that her clothes were getting tight. Maggie became very scared of gaining the “freshman fifteen” and started working out and eating more healthfully. After she lost the few pounds she had gained, however, she decided she could stand to lose a few more. She began getting up at 6 a.m. to fit in a long gym workout before class, and began to make rules about which foods in the cafeteria she was allowed to eat. Maggie comes to see you at the university counseling center because she is “stressed” and “anxious.” During your assessment, you notice that she is very thin, and you learn that she has lost 20 pounds since she began what she describes as “just eating better and working out to be healthier.”

Clearly identify and link concepts/ideas or theory presented in Chapter 1, 2, 3  to support your response to the questions above.

Provide a summary of the vignette’s key points as related to the social movements it represents. Identify and describe the concepts from this module that can be applied to the vignette to describe human behavior (i.e., cultural framing).

The LGBTQ community continues to experience incidences of prejudice and bias. Not only are these prejudices exemplified in interpersonal interactions through slurs and violent acts but also in the policies maintained in social work agencies and institutions. On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court extended marriage rights to same-sex partners. Since this ruling, the federal government has extended all federal and military/veteran benefits to married same-sex couples. Despite this progress, states continue to debate laws and policies that would legalize forms of discrimination toward LGBTQ individuals. Advocacy organizations, such as the Human Rights Campaign, provide policy maps showing the different rights provided in different states (see http://www.hrc.org/state_maps). Social workers are expected to fight to eliminate these inequalities throughout communities, programs, and institutions.

To prepare: Consider the following statement:

NASW encourages the adoption of laws that recognize inheritance, insurance, same-sex marriage, child custody, property, and other rights in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender relationships. The Association firmly believes that all federal protections and responsibilities available to legally married people in the United States should be available to people who enter same sex unions (including domestic partnerships, civil unions, and same sex marriages).

In a 3 page essay, address the following:

  • Provide a summary of the vignette’s key points as related to the social movements it represents. Identify and describe the concepts from this module that can be applied to the vignette to describe human behavior (i.e., cultural framing).
  • Identify and discuss the effects of the identified social movement on the individual described in the vignette.
  • Provide a summary of service methods or options that could be used to support this person. You can use examples you have identified in your own community as well.
