The link to the screencast will be attached to the poster page within your Pathbrite Portfolio so that your colleagues may interact with your insights into the materials.

Introduction (this will have a well-defined purpose statement in your intro paragraph that provides guidance to the reader about what you are going to cover in your paper)

Assignment Instructions

First, select a newer scholarly journal article (no older than 2015) relevant to the course regarding the psychological impact of a Weapon of Mass Destruction attack on the population.  Then conduct an article review of that article. It must be related to the course or course materials. The intent is for students to do some external research away from the provided references and find an Article in the Library. Students should search the library’s online databases, such as ProQuest, EbscoHost, and others, to find scholarly or peer-reviewed articles.

Additionally, the review of the journal article is an evaluation of the article’s strengths, weaknesses, and validity. It is used to inform of the article’s value through your explanation, interpretation, and analysis. As you do this, ask the major questions that are central to the review process:

1. What is the purpose of this article?

2. Why is it important to investigate or examine the subject of the article?

3. How are the authors carrying out the task? Are their methods and comments appropriate and adequate to the task?

4. What do they claim to have found out? Are the findings clearly stated?

5. How does this advance knowledge in the field?

Hint: These would make really good section titles for your paper.

Factors that have lead organizations to adopting flexible working practices and family-friendly policies include globalization bringing about more competition, changes in family values and structures, government legislation, and other factors relating to the changes made within a larger social system (Uhl-Bien, Osborn, & Schermherhorn, 2014). The social system itself has changed over generations. Women and minorities are becoming more present in the workplace, family structure changes from the original nuclear structure (Uhl-Bien, Osborn, & Schermherhorn, 2014). Organizations realize that recruiting and training new employees comes at a cost when retaining employees is more cost-effective (Uhl-Bien, Osborn, & Schermherhorn, 2014). Other ways that organizations or the government have included ways to be flexible are the change from the traditional Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm work schedule, FMLA, maternity and paternity leave, sick and vacation pay, etc. (Uhl-Bien, Osborn, & Schermherhorn, 2014). These changes in how organizations treat employees is becoming the best way to keep employees.

When I was younger, I remember my grandparents talking about how the latest generation changes organizations or careers rather than spend thirty to forty years at the same place. I remember mentioning that organizations must have treated them better because we tend to change careers or workplace because of economic opportunities such as a raise that we would not have received if we remained with the organization, benefits that were better than the present workplace, etc. I have noticed that workplaces are offering appealing packages. For example, I am a state Homecare Worker (caretaker for those who wish to remain in their homes). We received a pay bump for having to work during the Coronavirus time period (some were quitting out of fear).

Justify the use of the chosen diagnostic manual (i.e., Why was this manual chosen over others?). Evaluate symptoms within the context of an appropriate theoretical orientation for this diagnosis.

Outline for the Psychiatric Diagnosis

Review the instructions for the Psychiatric Diagnosis assignment in Week Six. This week’s assignment will build upon the work you have completed on your chosen case study in Weeks One and Two.

For this assignment, you will construct an outline of your Psychiatric Diagnosis paper. This outline is meant to provide structure for your final assignment, jump-start your thought process on your case study, and ensure you are on the correct path toward the successful completion of your diagnosis.

Your outline should be one to two pages of content and include a brief two- to three-sentence description of each of the required areas listed in the Psychiatric Diagnosis prompt, except for the following two areas:

  • Justify the use of the chosen diagnostic manual (i.e., Why was this manual chosen over others?).
  • Evaluate symptoms within the context of an appropriate theoretical orientation for this diagnosis.

For these two areas, provide a complete draft of your justification and evaluation based on the case study. You must include explicit information on the theoretical orientation chosen for the case and justification of the use of the diagnostic manual chosen. Research a minimum of five peer-reviewed sources published within the last 10 years to support your choice of theoretical orientation and diagnostic manual. These sources will also be used for the Psychiatric Diagnosis paper. The outline should specify which sources will apply to the justification and evaluation areas.

The Outline for the Psychiatric Diagnosis:

  • Must be one to two single-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.).
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use at least five peer-reviewed sources published within the last 10 years.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric (Links to an external site.) for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Discussion – Week 6

Discussion: Treatment of Addiction

While there is considerable variation across strengths-based treatment models, all of them are bound by core characteristics: They “honor the principle of client self-determination, attend to the client’s stage of readiness, and focus on the resources and capabilities the client and client’s family may use to further their goals” (Van Wormer & Davis, 2018, p. 316). These are essential to the client’s motivation and engagement in treatment, and honor the client’s own role in recovery.

As you review the assigned readings this week, think about which strengths-based treatment approach resonates with you. How does it align with what you have learned thus far about the etiology of addiction? Consider how you will integrate this knowledge into your toolbox in your efforts to become a clinician skilled in working with substance-related and addictive disorders.

Group counseling is a popular approach to addiction treatment. Like individual treatment, it offers its own unique benefits to participants. Some individuals may be hesitant to participate in a group, as they may feel self-conscious or embarrassed by what they perceive as their weaknesses or failings. However, the camaraderie and support offered by group counseling often quickly dispels such fears, and participants may be surprised by how beneficial the group process is on their recovery efforts.

Therapy groups often meet once per week, though more frequent sessions may be utilized depending on circumstances and levels of care, and are led by a licensed professional. Groups may be open or closed, gender limited or integrated, or have other qualifying requirements that can help focus the group interactions, as well as support goals and cohesiveness.

For this Discussion, you will choose one of the case vignettes in your Resources this week and one of the four treatment approaches discussed in Chapter 8 of your text: harm reduction, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, or cognitive behavioral therapy.

Post by Day 4 an overview of the treatment approach you selected for your chosen case study and why. Then, describe one strength and one weakness of your selected treatment approach. Lastly, identify two treatment goals for your client and how the treatment approach you selected would facilitate meeting the identified goals. Include in your discussion considerations for group versus individual treatment. Then, discuss how group treatment can support both relapse prevention efforts and the continuum of care.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Briefly describe what you have learned about how counselors—particularly counselors who serve children and adolescents—need skills to influence community systems, family systems, and school systems on behalf of their clients.

This assignment will walk you through the steps to create crisis response plans, which is a critical job skill for counselors of children and adolescents. Using the Group Crisis Intervention Template, you will:

  • Develop a one-time group crisis intervention plan that will help children or adolescents deal with the loss of classmates.
  • Develop a one-time group crisis intervention plan to assist their parents and other concerned community members.
  • For each intervention plan, describe how you will adapt these groups so that they are beneficial for individuals from different cultural backgrounds and are inclusive of individuals with exceptionalities.
  • Use the Group Crisis Intervention Template to complete this assignment. Follow the instructions for formatting your plan, as indicated in the template.

Counselors who work with children and adolescents rarely work only with children and adolescents! They are often asked to help with prevention efforts, consult with schools or other groups that serve children, educate parents and teachers about children’s mental health needs, and advocate for changes in communities and schools. Therefore, any counselor must understand how these multiple systems operate and must be knowledgeable about the programs and networks that support the mental health of diverse children and adolescents in the community.

For this assignment, you will describe how you would work with diverse individuals and two different constituencies by developing a group crisis intervention proposal for the Middle Valley Consortium. The intervention will include counseling components, education and prevention components, and follow-up plans to connect individuals to other programs or networks, if needed.

Your proposal is being requested because the community is still reeling from the shocking death of two middle school students, who overdosed on prescription drugs. Your proposal will include plans for holding two crisis intervention groups, one for the classmates of the deceased children and one for parents and community members who are upset by the event and concerned about the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse among children and adolescents.

Your community is diverse, so your crisis groups will include members from several different racial and ethnic backgrounds. You also have been informed that there is one middle school girl who has a hearing impairment, as do her parents, and one middle school boy affected by a motor neuron disease resulting in orthopedic impairment; he requires a wheelchair. His father is also affected by this heritable disease and requires a wheelchair. Additionally, from previous experience in the school, you know that two of your group members are medicated for ADHD.

You will implement your crisis counseling groups adapting the Group Crisis Intervention plan offered in Counseling Children, pages 610–612; however, you will tailor your plan to meet the needs of your attendees. Your proposal will include the following:

Introduction to Group Crisis Intervention

Discuss why group crisis counseling is helpful for children and adolescents who experience crises and how this meets important mental health needs. Discuss why group crisis counseling is also helpful for parents, teachers, or community members who work with children, using a systems theory perspective.

Counseling Theory

Select a counseling theory that will guide your crisis interventions and state your rationale for using it for this purpose.

Skills Required in Diverse Groups

Discuss the counseling skills and techniques, based on your selected theory, which will be genuinely helpful to both groups. How will you build and maintain rapport throughout the group? How will you ascertain that you accurately hear and sensitively respond to the group’s emotions?

Sample Group Outlines—Counseling Phase

For each group, describe the Introductory Phase, Fact Phase, Feeling Phase, and Client’s Current Symptoms Phase with brief elaborations of what you as a counselor will do or say in each phase.

Teaching Phase

The teaching phase will differ for your middle school group and your concerned parents and community members group. In addition to teaching your groups about common responses to crises, including helpful and unhelpful responses, you will need to include a prevention component to briefly address substance addictions, including why and how they develop (etiology), how they can be prevented, and how to intervene when a peer (or a child or adolescent) is suspected of using drugs, and where group members can go for further information.

Summary Phase

The summary phase will help support group members going forward. Describe how you will help develop individual or group action plans. Describe how you will inform the group of several hypothetical school or community resources where they can turn for additional help. The resources should be somewhat different for the adolescent group and the parent and community members groups. Including resources that are available in your own community as part of your resources for your groups will help prepare you for your own future!

Assuring Cultural Appropriateness for Diverse Individuals

One responsibility of counselors is to use multicultural competencies to ensure that individuals from all background benefit from our services. In group settings, this can be even more challenging due to differences among the group members. Even group members from the same race have different levels of acculturation, and so might respond to counseling strategies differently. What will you do to remain alert and responsive to needs of the group? How might you need to modify your counseling skills, techniques, and the group crisis counseling intervention to make it culturally appropriate for diverse individuals?

Assuring Appropriateness for Individuals With Exceptionalities

All individuals have the right to receive mental health services that meet their needs. How will you adapt or modify your groups so that children and adults with unique exceptionalities or disabilities can benefit as involved members? Are there legal considerations that will inform your group crisis counseling plans?

Conclusion

Briefly describe what you have learned about how counselors—particularly counselors who serve children and adolescents—need skills to influence community systems, family systems, and school systems on behalf of their clients.

I have attached the template that must be used

Describe how your understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of brief or solution-focused therapy is similar to or different from their understanding

Managed care is a frequently discussed and debated topic among mental health professionals. Managed care organizations encourage short-term, brief therapy and mandate the use of evidence-based practices. Using the Argosy University online library resources, locate one peer-reviewed journal article that describes the use of brief or solution-focused therapy with a client or population of interest to you. Post your article as an attachment in the Discussion Area.

Tasks:

In a minimum of 200 words, post to the Discussion Area your response to the following:

  • Summarize the article you selected by describing:
    • The purpose of the article
    • The client/population mentioned in the article
    • How brief or solution-focused therapy was used with the client/population
    • The outcomes/results of the use of brief or solution-focused therapy
  • Looking through the lens of managed care, describe how counselors, clients, and managed care organizations benefit from brief or solution-focused therapy.
  • Looking through the same lens, provide an argument to managed care organizations that describe the disadvantages associated with the use of brief or solution-focused therapy.
  • Further explain what you perceive to be the main advantages and disadvantages of managed care. Be sure to elaborate rather than regurgitate the material covered in the module and assigned readings.
  • Explain how the learning from this module will contribute to your professional growth as a new counselor-in-training.
  • Your discussion should clearly reflect your thoughtful and logical analysis of the information.

Support your rationale and analysis by using at least two resources from professional literature in your response. Professional literature may include peer-reviewed journal articles you can access through the Argosy University online library; relevant textbooks; and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (websites ending in .edu or .gov).

Be sure to read all of your classmates’ original posts and respond to more than two of your classmates’ posts. Your responses should be substantive, meaning they should encourage further dialogue and discussion, encourage your classmates to think about other aspects of the topic, compare your response to your classmates’ responses, or ask a relevant question, to better assist you with your understanding. Responses such as “I like/I agree” or “I don’t like/I don’t agree” are not complete enough.

Your discussion posts and all written assignments should reflect graduate-level writing skills and appropriate use of APA style, including in-text citations and references.

Submission Details:

  • By the due date assigned, post your responses to the Discussion Area.
  • Through the end of the module, respond to more than two of your classmates’ posts. While responding, critique the relevance of the article selected by your classmates. Describe how your understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of brief or solution-focused therapy is similar to or different from their understanding. Be sure to mention any aspect in your classmates’ posts that you had not thought about previously as relating to managed care.

Select a fictional human character (i.e., cartoon character, film/TV character, virtual character) and consider an important event or period of time in the life of the character and the developmental processes during this event/period of time.

Consider the role each process—cognitive, physical, and social-emotional—plays on the development of an individual. The cognitive developmental process involves the ability to think, remember, reason, problem-solve, and communicate. The physical developmental process entails not only changes in height and weight, but also fine and gross muscle control, balance, strength, reproductive ability, and appearance. Finally, the social-emotionaldevelopmental process involves beliefs about oneself in relation to others, including self-identity, self-concept, morality, and relationships.

Cognitive, physical, and social-emotional developmental processes influence and interact with one another. For example, a child’s ability to consider another person’s perspective will, in part, determine the quality of friendships and how long they are maintained. An adult who is physically mature has the cognitive capacity to weigh the pros and cons of becoming sexually active. Keep in mind that the relative importance of cognitive, physical, and social-emotional developmental processes may vary depending upon the age of the individual (e.g., infant, adolescent, young adult, older adult) and any physical or developmental challenges that may arise.

For this Discussion, you will examine cognitive, physical, and social-emotional processes at a specific period of a character’s life.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Select a fictional human character (i.e., cartoon character, film/TV character, virtual character) and consider an important event or period of time in the life of the character and the developmental processes during this event/period of time.
  • Select two of the three developmental processes (i.e., cognitive, physical, and social-emotional) to describe.

By Day 3

Post a brief description of the fictional human character (i.e., cartoon character, film/TV character, virtual character) and the event/period of time you selected. Describe two of the three developmental processes—cognitive, physical, and social-emotional—and explain whether they were affected and/or changed in relation to the event/period of time. Be specific in your post and provide examples. Use your Learning Resources to support your post. Use proper APA format and citations to support your explanation.

· Describe the specific roles of two family members and explain if the various roles work well together for the benefit of this family.

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper in which you analyze a family that is familiar to you. Support your analysis by using the Kirst-Ashman and Hull text and at least 2 to 3 additional peer-reviewed articles to do the following:

· Describe the structure of a family that is familiar to you.

· Identify the strengths in the family.

· Explain where in the life cycle this family is located and how that may influence family dynamics.

· Analyze one form of communication used by this family and how this communication style influences family dynamics.

· Describe the specific roles of two family members and explain if the various roles work well together for the benefit of this family.

· Explain how understanding cultural values will help a social worker working with this family.

· Analyze this family using systems theory or the ecological perspective.

Support your paper with references to Kirst-Ashman and Hull, in addition to other resources used to complete this assignment. Paper should include appropriate APA citations and a reference list. You are expected to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply concepts from the course by paraphrasing resources and providing specific examples of how a concept is evident in the family system you identified for this paper.

STRUCTURE OF THE FAMILY

The family I selected for this assignment is the Alston family. The Family consist of Claude Alston (Husband) 45, Marylou Alston (Wife) 46, Colette Alston (Daughter) 23, Claude Alston Jr. (Son) 17, and Rhonda Alston and Wanda Alston (Twin daughters) 15. The family currently resides in Washington, DC in the ward 8 community. The Alston family identify themselves as African Americans who practice Christianity.

IDENTITYFYING FAMILY STREGTHNS

As a future clinician I understand that using strength-based perspective is what differentiate social workers from other social science disciplines.  After carefully assessing the family, some of the strengths that I was able to identify as a family unit are spending quality time with each other, having faith, the ability to cope and handle crisis,  being supportive to each other, having musical talent to sing and play instruments. This family presented a well round of family strength perspective. It is important for a social worker to acknowledge that all families have strengths, challenges and areas of potential growth. However, if one looks only for problems in a family, one will see only problems. If one also looks for strengths, one will find strengths (Cardwell, PSYD/ family jrank,n.d).

WHERE IN LIFE CYCLE IS FAMILY LOCATED HOW THEY INFLUENCE FAMILY DYNAMIC

The family life cycle consists of a series of stages such as independence, coupling, parenting (infants through adolescents), launching adult children, and retirement/ senior years (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018, p. 360. The Alston family is currently in the parenting stage of adolescents. This stage consists of the parents devoting much of their time, energy and resources to nurture and support the growth of their children. The  The children in high school

It allows the individual to adapt to the historical and social conditions of his time, thus ensuring continuity in civilization (Silva, 2003).

The family is in charge of transmitting to the child the uses and customs of their environment, modeling, stimulating, reinforcing, punishing, or rejecting the behaviors, attitudes and beliefs of its members. It allows the individual to adapt to the historical and social conditions of his time, thus ensuring continuity in civilization (Silva, 2003).

Likewise, it provides the material, emotional and emotional resources necessary for the person to be able to learn, so that the family context plays a basic role in the child’s evolution, especially in childhood. It is in this period where practices are crucial for the development of certain behaviors and personality (Meece, 2000).

As well as the preference of the child and self-regulation, in this sense it is important to bring enrichment environments where the children can develop their language, communication, empathy, and other skills and values that “playing” develop. In this sense, the children have to play in order to get all these social skills because they can model behaviors as well as the ability of decision taking, solving problems and conflict solutions.

Nowadays, the rhythm and the dynamics of the society sometimes make the mothers´ roll difficult to follow that is why some care givers had taken that place. However the most important is to support the child and have him/her regulate by setting limits making them able to get the autonomy they need in order to grow with self-steam and self-control (Kostelink, Whiren, Soderman and Kara, 2009).
