Technology:

For professional counselors technological changes means there may not be a need to relocate. Teleconferencing is now available and this provides an ability to reach clients in remote areas or clients can set up an appointment through your online private practices. In addition to easier access to clients, by accessing the Internet, counselors have a plethora of resources, research, updated code of ethics and continuing education.

Technology obviously provides many amenities for clients, as well. With mental health awareness has come easier opportunities for clients to reach out for help. There have been 24/7 crises lines have been around for quite some time for persons feeling depressed or have other mental health needs and need to talk to someone. Now there is a 24/7 text connecting option in the United States. If overwhelmed, suffering anxiety, depression, all a person needs to do is text 741741 and someone will text back immediately. Texts will continue or can change to a telephone call if requested, and the person will ‘stay with’ the person until s/he feels they are going to be okay or referred.

Rapport Building:

Dr. Capuzzi talked about the necessity of getting to know the total person and not be swayed by preset ideals, bias, or other based on culture, looks, etc. Digging into from a holistic mindset, considering all areas of the person’s world to better understand them and for the client to understand him/herself and come to the best options.

Assessment:

There were questions about the best career assessment instruments to be used for different populations. Dr. Capuzzi surprised me when he said he doesn’t put a lot of weight on assessments. He explained that he liked to discuss with clients what the assessment was all about, what it was described to reveal and how it was to aide in his/her career search. He then asks the client what they think the assessment will report and afterward review with client any differences. I think this is a great idea because it will provide the client with a baseline of what they think they know about one self.

2. Classmate (Y. Tho)

Meaningful Topic

Dr. Capuzzi  talked about addressing the whole person being important. This reminds me of the DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) which focuses on mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation. These are all areas that should be focused on when treating the person as a whole. This is important to me because the clients are more than just a mental illness they are a person that needs to be well in all areas, mentally and physically.

Incorporate into practice

I would use (DBT) to teach people how to live in the moment, cope with stress, regulate emotions and improve relations with others. This therapy was originally designed for people with borderline personality disorder, but has evolved to assist with self-harm, eating disorders, substance abuse and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

Three take away points

Working towards your career and gaining experience to put a visual on the field is important. The amount of classes that are required since Dr. Capuzzi was in college has changed and there was no licensure for counselors. The profession has evolved since he began his career. You could get a job with a Bachelors Degree at different locations but now a Masters if required. There was no such thing as a clinical mental health counselor.

Regardless of the clients age as counselors it is important to for us to be competent in the career counseling aspect of life. The topic of careers can impact individuals and families in different ways and arise in a unexpected time in a session (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012).

Meaningful Topic

Dr. Capuzzi discussed the topic of being in school and financial trying to survive and the hardship people go through when going back to school and having to pay off the student loan debt (Laureate Education, 2019). This is a topic that I know people in my environment have decided just to stick with their current career instead of going back to school. They have mentioned to me that they done want the debt or the stress that comes along with the debt, so they would rather be in a career they are not happy in. I recently had a client that just graduated from high school and this as well was a concern for him, his parents could afford for him to attend college, so his fear was not being able to pay for it on his own. He was also unsure of what he wanted to do with his life career wise. This will assist me in the future to understand what theories might be good to work with, in cases like my client an adolescent fresh out of high school showing fear and anxiety for the cost of school and what he wants to do with his life.

Take Away Points

The importance of this course was one point that I feel was something to take away from.  Going into the semester, I thought I would lose interest in this topic. However, I am learning a lot of techniques which I can apply with my clients currently. This is where it is important to be informed on this topic as you never know when this topic will come up in a session. Career isn’t just about a person looking for a job it has other stressor that may impact an individual or family system (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). A second take away point of Career Expert Session was the use of technology, technology is something that keeps growing and evolving. Currently, we use technology and the Internet for almost everything. Technology advances is a tool used to help an individual search for a job, network to search for a job, create documents needed to apply for a job and assist in an individual furthering their education (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). Dr. Capuzzi discussed the difference in requirements for aspiring counselors from the time he was in school. Dr. Capuzzi mentioned how the course requirement were less when he was school compared to now. This has led aspiring counselors currently to have to give not only more time to education but money to pay for the required courses that have been known to cause stress once the counselor finishes school they have a student loan debt to pay off (Laureate Education, 2019).

Chapter 11 – Gender and Human Sexuality

Create a PowerPoint presentation with 10-12 slides (not including the title and reference slides) entitled Review of [Insert the name of the tests reviewed]. Your presentation must provide at least one slide for each of the required topics and include appropriate citations of your referenced sources. Required topics to be addressed for each test:

• Name of the test, author or authors, publisher and publication date
• Qualifications of the test user
• Common professional uses of the test
• Explain what the test is purported to measure along with any reliability and validity evidence that supports the author’s or publisher’s claims.
• Describe the appropriate applications of the test in terms of the population(s) on which the test is validated (including age ranges) and any information regarding populations for which the test’s use is not recommended.
• Subtest names and brief descriptions
• Administration and scoring procedures
• Cost and administration time
• Your critique of the instrument, including an evaluation of the test’s strengths and weaknesses as a measure of the theoretical constructs of intelligence and/or achievement

STEP #1: Select ONE popular press/mainstream media source (i.e., newspaper or magazine article,

online article, TV program) that discusses recent research on a psychological topic. Read this article, noting the general conclusions/impressions the average reader would make about the research findings based on that article.

STEP #2: Next, locate the scientific source (i.e., peer-reviewed journal article) that originally published

the research findings discussed in the popular press article.  Read the original source, paying particular attention to how it may differ from the first in terms of language, tone and/or content when discussing the research findings.

STEP #3: After noting the similarities and differences between the two sources, write a critical review

that compares/contrasts the coverage provided by each (see Criteria below).

Your write-up MUST include the following:

1)  Date and Source of the Popular Press Newspaper/Program/Website Article (i.e., the name of the article, its author(s), and the publication in which it appeared; the URL for the website) that discusses the findings of a research study conducted on a given psychological topic.

2)  Summary of the Popular Press Article. Provide a summary of the article’s main points.  This summary should include enough detail so that someone who has not read the article would still have a complete picture of what it had included.  Be sure that your summary highlights the conclusions the average reader would be likely to draw about the research findings (and psychology in general) based on the coverage provided in the article.

(NOTE:  It is advised that you complete these first two steps of the assignment before reading the original study (in the scientific source).  That way, you are experiencing the popular press article on its own.  This will help to make any differences between it and the original scientific study more salient to you.)

3)  Date and Source of the Scientific Article (i.e., title of the article; its author(s); name of the journal) that originally published the study discussed in the popular press article.

4)  Compare/Contrast to the Original Scientific Source.  After summarizing the popular press article, read the original study published in the scientific/academic source. Compare and contrast how the same research findings are presented/discussed in the two sources (popular press vs academic/scientific). In doing so, please consider the following:

a)  Do the two sources differ in terms of language and/or tone?  Are strategies used by either to “grab the reader’s attention”?  If so, how?

b)  Does the popular press article “get it right”?  That is to say, does the article accurately relay the methodology, findings, and/or conclusions of the original study?  If not, what errors or oversimplifications are made?

c)  Does the popular press article cite implications for the original research that “go beyond” what the original researchers have claimed?  For example, does the popular press article suggest that the variables studied are causally related (i.e., one caused the other to happen) when the original research is merely a correlation between the two variables (and therefore cannot be used to make conclusions about causality between those variables)?

d)  Would a reader who read only one of these articles be likely to draw different conclusions about the psychological topic being examined (and/or psychology in general) or would the conclusions be similar regardless of the source of the information (i.e. popular press versus academic)?  If different, what would the differences be and what implications might that have?

e)  What has this exercise taught you about the process by which research findings on psychological topics are communicated to the general public and how will it affect how you read articles (from various sources) in the future?

5)  Complete Reference List.  Provide a complete Reference list that includes each source cited in your

psychological application discussion (both popular and peer-reviewed). APA FORM
