What is your opinion on the benefit or detriment of what the advertisers are trying to sell? Do you think this product/idea is useful?

Book:  Berger, K. (2016). Invitation to the Life Span. New York, New York: Worth Publishers.

With the population of older adults on the rise, there are growing depictions of the aging population in popular culture, media, and advertising. For this assignment, you are asked to find 4 examples of adults in advertisement, critiquing them through the lens of accurate adult development, as well comparing and contrasting them.

Instructions:

Find 4 advertisements for or about individuals who are in late adulthood (over the age of 65). Examples could be print, commercial, or web based.  In a PowerPoint presentation, present your examples using one slide for each example. For each slide, include either: a picture of the advertisement, a link and screenshot of the video if you are using a commercial, or an Internet link and screenshot of the website if you are using a web based advertisement.

In the “notes” section of the PowerPoint presentation, critique the ad by address the following questions:

  • How are the advertisers trying to depict older adults and/or the aging process?
  • What biases do the advertisers display about older adults or the aging process?
  • Point to information in the textbook (and at least one other scholarly source-from the NU library) that either confirm or oppose this depiction of older adults and/or the aging process?
  • What are the advertisers trying to sell (ex what kind of product or idea)?
  • What is your opinion on the benefit or detriment of what the advertisers are trying to sell? Do you think this product/idea is useful?

Each slide should include citation of the advertisement itself, as well as of the information used in critique.

On a separate slide of your presentation, include a picture depicting each of your examples. Use the notes section to compare and contrast each of your examples. Cite the textbook (or other scholarly sources) as support for your responses.

For example you could address these questions:

  • Is there is one advertisement you think more accurately presents the aging population or offers a service that better serves them? Describe which one and why.
  • Is there one example that presents more ageist views than another? Include a description of why.
  • Is there one example that you feel would resonate the most with older adults? Include a description of why.

The last slide of your presentation should be a reference page, citing all of the references used throughout the whole presentation.

Clarify the action steps that you (as coach) need to complete prior to the next coaching session. For example, what information do you need to research?

Project: Coaching

Coaching Session 2

People often seek the assistance of coaches for support when they are trying to make positive changes in life. These changes can be as simple as arriving at work on time each day or more complex objectives encompassing time or life management, motivation, decision making, lifelong learning, and behavior modification.

Week 3 Assignment

Last week, you helped your coachee identify a couple of professional objectives and the importance of those objectives. This week, continue to discuss with your coachee the relevance of the objectives you have identified as priorities. What short-term and long-term benefits might your coachee realize when these objectives are achieved? Is your coachee facing any challenges, roadblocks, or resistance? Is your coachee fearful or resistant, on any level, to make changes necessary to achieve these objectives? What does the coachee need to do to overcome the challenges, fear, or resistance?

As you ask meaningful and thought-provoking questions, gently guide your coachee to the answers that lie within. Avoid directing your coachee or offering solutions before the coachee has had ample time to explore and develop answers and solutions. The focus of this week’s session is not on developing action plans to achieve the objectives. Rather, it is to assess the things that might prevent the coachee from achieving them.

For this second coaching session, submit a coaching report that provides the following information:

  • Recap the coaching session (1 to 2 pages)
    • Where did the session occur?
    • When did it occur?
    • Who was being coached?
    • Who was the coach?
    • Summarize the conversation. Who said what?
    • Any key details about the relationship or interaction that need to be recorded? (e.g., impressions, difficulties, opportunities, things that were missed, things to explore in the future, boundaries, parameters, etc.).
  • Analyzed the short- and long-term benefits to the coachee for achieving the objectives (½ to 1 page).
  • Assessed the challenges, resistance, and fears that might prevent the coachee from achieving the objectives (½ to 1 page).
  • Assessed what the coachee might need to do to overcome the challenges, resistance, and fear (½ to 1 page).
  • Clarify the action steps that you (as coach) need to complete prior to the next coaching session. For example, what information do you need to research? What resources do you need to locate? What follow ups do you need to complete? What skills do you need to refine? (¼ to ½ page).

Submission Details:

  • Submit your report in a three- to five-page Microsoft Word document, using APA style.

Post your explanation of how the difference between statistical significance and the true importance (clinical significance) of the relationship between variables or the degree of difference between groups affect your practice decision making.

Research studies often compare variables, conditions, times, and/or groups of participants to evaluate relationships between variables or differences between groups or times. For example, if researchers are interested in knowing whether an intervention produces change in the desired direction, they will want to know whether the change is due to chance (statistical significance) or possibly due to the intervention. In this case, researchers could use a pre and post measurement of the same participants on the condition being treated, or they could compare a group of individuals who receive the intervention to a group that does not receive the intervention. Researchers could also compare two groups of individuals who receive different interventions. The rigor of the research design helps control for other factors that might account for the changes (e.g., time, conditions, group differences in other factors, etc.). To prepare for this Discussion, consider the concept of statistical significance.

Post your explanation of how the difference between statistical significance and the true importance (clinical significance) of the relationship between variables or the degree of difference between groups affect your practice decision making. Be sure to include an explanation of what statistical significance means. Include an example from a quantitative study that found statistically significant differences. Discuss whether the results of the study would—or should—influence your practice as a social worker. Please use the resources to support your answer.

Discuss some of the basic differences between how  the two fields might respond differently to policies to try to reduce  the transmission of COVID-19 in both our country and globally.

In a speech in 1966, Robert F. Kennedy said “There is a Chinese  curse which says ‘May he live in interesting times.’ Like it or not we  live in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty; but  they are also more open to the creative energy of men than any other  time in history.” (jfklibrary, n.d.).

*Note, that the first record of this phrase “may he live in interesting times” is in a speech by Sir Austen Chamberlain in 1936.*

**Also, there is no evidence that this was ever a Chinese curse.**

Currently, our world is facing a global pandemic, and individuals’  self-interests are pitted against the common good. People have been  asked to socially distance or self-isolate. Moreover, if people have  COVID-19, they may be asked to quarantine and not leave their home.

Using the due process and crime control model paradigmdevelop and describe a potential due process model policy recommendation for COVID-19 to reduce the transmission of the virus.  Then, develop and describe a potential crime control model policy recommendation for COVID-19 to reduce transmissionCan  you think of times when you might want to apply discretion in your  policy? If so, provide examples of why/when you might want to offer  discretion.

Finally, although the fields of psychology and law attempt  collaboration, such collaboration sometimes leads to frustration for  both fields. Discuss some of the basic differences between how  the two fields might respond differently to policies to try to reduce  the transmission of COVID-19 in both our country and globally. You may want to think in terms of philosophies, decision-making processes, methodologies, etc.

This paper should be no more than 3 pages of content typed and  double-spaced (reference page does not count as part of the 3 pages.)

Please provide APA citations (in-text parenthetical) and an APA  reference page. (You do not need a title page, but be sure to put your  name on the document).

Please submit as a file upload.

I will grade this take-home essay on the 3 Cs: content (your  knowledge of relevant content), creativity (creative, outside of the box  thinking in developing policies), and clarity of thoughts and writing.

Provide one example of recent events involving police professionalism. Compare any similarities or differences between the two examples. You may pull from the media, newspapers, etc.

With the ever-growing demands of an evolving country, police professionalism was implemented to adhere to the expectations of a civil society. Police agencies were designed to provide the greatest level of protection and order maintenance for the American population.

Post by Day 3: Define police professionalism, and describe two outcomes of increased police professionalism during the 20th century. Provide one example of recent events involving police professionalism. Compare any similarities or differences between the two examples. You may pull from the media, newspapers, etc. Explain what recommendations or strategies could be implemented to help establish more positive relationships.

Respond by Day 5 to at least two colleagues, considering the outcomes of increased police professionalism discussed in the post. Suggest additional recommendations and/or strategies that were not brought up in the post.

  • Chapter 12, “Corrections in Modern America”Do you agree with the claim that there is an overarching intelligence that influences multiple domains of skill, or do you agree with the claim that there are multiple intelligences? Explain. After watching the video Healthy Learning: Multiple Intelligences in this week’s presentations, discuss how an understanding of learning preferences could help  psychologists and therapists communicate and work with his or her patients.

Describe a couple of studies by which the reliability and validity of your proposed tests might be evaluated.

Howard Gardner proposed a radical alternative model of intelligence – quite different from the hierarchical models generally accepted by psychometricians. Known as the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, it posits the existence of 7 – 9 separate abilities, each designated an “intelligence.” The theory originally (1983) included the following abilities: linguistic, logical-mathematical, visual, musical, kinesthetic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal. Later, Gardner added naturalistic intelligence; still later, existential intelligence joined the list. The Multiple Intelligences model has become quite popular among educators, especially at the preschool and elementary levels. The theory has, however, been criticized on empirical grounds. Neither Gardner nor his followers have developed tests to measure these hypothesized abilities. Therefore, nobody has demonstrated that the abilities really exist – or, if they do, that they are distinct, as opposed to being part of a hierarchy with Spearman’s ‘g’ at the top.

You are instructed to do the following:

1.  Explain briefly (1½ – 2 pages) how Gardner identified these “intelligences.” That is, on what evidentiary basis does he postulate their existence and defend their status as distinct cognitive abilities? Note that this does not call for a list of the intelligences. What I am looking for are the standards by which he judges whether an ability counts as “an intelligence.” (10 points)

2.  Describe briefly (1½ – 2 pages) how Gardner defines and describes musical intelligence. What are its core operations, and how does it qualify as an intelligence? (10 points)

3.  Propose a set of tests that could be used to measure musical intelligence as defined by Gardner. Describe the kinds of items that might be included, any special equipment that would be required, and any special scoring or judging instructions that might need to be mastered by professionals wishing to utilize the tests. Use your imagination, but be realistic. This should come to about 1½ – 2 pages. (10 points)

4.  Describe a couple of studies by which the reliability and validity of your proposed tests might be evaluated. Your goal is to develop a case for the construct validity of your test and a basis on which educators or clinicians might use the test to evaluate children’s abilities.  Be realistic. This should come to about 2 – 2½ pages. (10 points)

Your responses should be typed. Please double-space throughout, use 1” margins all around, and use a standard font such as Times New Roman 12. The entire paper will come to about 6 – 8 pages. Remember to use your own words and work independently.

The only resources you need (besides your wonderful minds) are your class notes, textbook, and two relevant chapters from Gardner’s (1983) book. I have posted them to eLearning. Chapter 4 answers question #1; chapter 6 contains the answer to #2. The rest is up to you!

This is due on Tuesday, May 5th. Upload your work to our eLearning page.

Work hard but have fun with it!

Select one stressful situation to focus on in this Discussion (e.g., divorce, marriage, a job change or loss, a sick family member or aging parent, a death in the family, etc.).

Discussion: Gender, Stress, and Mental Health

Whether you are male or female, you no doubt face some level of stress in your life. Even good things that happen, such as marriage, a job promotion, a move to a new home, or birth of a baby, can be stressful. People deal with stress in different ways. Some handle life stressors in positive and healthy ways, while others allow stressors to impact their health. The damaging effects of stress have been shown to be a potential factor in cardiovascular disease, cancer, hypertension, and numerous other issues. In addition, there are many stress-related mental health problems, such as depression, suicide, anxiety, and substance abuse that can be in part related to stress and the ability to deal effectively with stress.

Life’s stressors can be very different for men and women. Men experience different stresses in life and often deal with stress differently than women do. For example, men and women have different roles and expectations from others placed on them. Men and women experience violence, both as children and as adults, at different rates, which has been shown to be a significant factor in serious mental health problems and ongoing stress. Men and women experience discrimination differently, which adds to stress, especially in the workplace. Women tend to be in poverty more often than men, which is a significant factor in stress, depression, and anxiety. These are only a few examples where research suggests that the stress factors for men and women are different.

Other factors contribute to stress and resulting health problems and can be different for men and women. For example, women typically develop stronger support systems than men do as adults, which has been show to improve the ability to deal with stress. Men may perceive themselves as having more power over those things that cause them stress than women do. Power often impacts how one copes with stress. And though men and women often have families as their support system, women tend to take on the role of the family caretaker, which can be a significant stressor. It may also be that men and women react to stressful situations differently, either because of personal traits or because of how they have been socialized. Some research suggests that women tend to respond to stress with more emotion, while men may respond to stress with more problem-solving behaviors.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapter 14 in the course text, Gender: Psychological Perspectives. Focus on the gender-related similarities and differences related to stress, coping, and the related mental health problems.
  • Review the article, “Gender Roles and Traits in Stress and Health.”
  • Think about specific stressful life situations, such as divorce, marriage, entering a new school, job changes or loss, dealing with sick family members or aging parents, the death of someone close, having a baby, etc. Consider some of the stressors specific to these situations.
  • Select one stressful situation to focus on in this Discussion (e.g., divorce, marriage, a job change or loss, a sick family member or aging parent, a death in the family, etc.).
  • Explore the topic of stress on the American Psychological Association website. Focus on stress issues related to the life situation you selected.
  • Now think about how stressors may be different for men and women in general and specific to the situation you chose. How might men and women deal with the stressors differently? Why might there be differences?

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post a brief description of a specific stressful life situation. Identify the specific stressors in this situation illustrating how some stressors may be different for men and women. Use specific examples when possible. Also, identify possible differences in how men and women may deal with these stressors and why this might be the case. Discuss the potential mental health disorders that might result.

In a 2- to 3-page paper, analyze one of scenarios provided for this assignment using either a cognitive behavioral, behavioral, dialectical behavioral, rational emotive behavioral, reality, or solution-focused theory approach.

Assignment: School Counseling Scenario: Using a Cognitive-Behavioral or Reality Approach

For this Assignment, read and select one of the following scenarios:

Scenario 1:

Keesha, an African-American, female fifth grader, stops by your office to talk. Summer break is quickly approaching, which means she will soon be entering middle school. Keesha is an average student who enjoys school but is anxious about leaving the comforts of elementary school, where she has a few close friends. She is aware that her best friend will attend a different middle school than she will, which causes her worry and sadness. She expresses concerns about the transition and states that she “probably won’t be able to make any new friends.” Throughout your exchange, she frequently makes self-deprecating statements and often compares herself to other students stating, “I’m not as smart as them” and “what if the kids at my new school don’t like me?”

Scenario 2:

Jack is a high school senior who recently received a rejection letter for admission from his first-choice college. He is aware that several of his friends who put forth more effort into their schooling and have higher grades have already been accepted to the college. Jack is devastated and expresses that he feels like a “total failure” because he did not get accepted to his desired school like the rest of his friends. A more likely next step for Jack’s post-secondary plans is to consider community college, but he must improve his grades. He goes on to say that he might as well not even apply to other schools because “it’s useless,” and he “won’t get accepted anyway.”

Review this week’s resources.

Think about how either a cognitive behavioral, behavioral, dialectical behavioral, rational emotive behavioral, reality, or solution-focused theory approach can be applied to support the student in the scenario.

In a 2- to 3-page paper, analyze one of scenarios provided for this assignment using either a cognitive behavioral, behavioral, dialectical behavioral, rational emotive behavioral, reality, or solution-focused theory approach. You may choose only one theory and you must justify your choice. Be sure to include the following:

  • The theory you chose and why. Be sure to discuss how you conceptualize/ explain the student’s issues using theoretical components.
  • The considerations that need to be taken into account from a developmental and/or cultural perspective.
  • The overall counseling goal with the student, from your chosen theoretical perspective.
  • The specific strategies and/or techniques you would use with the student based upon your chosen theoretical approach.
  • You should note at least two interventions from the chosen theoretical perspective.
  • The strengths and limitations to using this approach with the student.

· Discuss the issue and the key people’s impact on theory, practices, and ethics, and how these issues have changed service delivery systems.

For this assignment, you will select a movie that depicts the worldview of one of the specific populations discussed in this module to which you do not belong. Your review should include the following:

  • Provide a brief overview of the plot of the movie and the scenes that are pertinent to the special population.
  • Explain how the movie supported or refuted stereotypes and assumptions.
  • Describe how viewing the movie contributed to your understanding of the population, including its systems, values, communication styles, and experiences with oppression, prejudice, and discrimination.
  • Identify and describe additional resources to increase your understanding of this population and how to serve it effectively in counseling.

If you have other suggestions as possible movies, please contact your instructor for approval prior to working on the assignment.

Your final product should be a 3- to 5-page Microsoft Word document written in APA format. Utilize at least three scholarly sources. Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

In this assignment, you will explore the field of human services with emphasis on its history and the effects, both positive and negative, it has had on people. This assignment allows you to identify and follow the evolution of the influence of social policy, theory, and outcomes of practices on human services delivery. The activities in this assignment will introduce students to the types of activities that have influenced real-world administrative roles. At the end of the assignment, you will be able to conceptualize how the policy and practice issues influence the operation of human services agencies.

    Tasks:

Select and research an issue in human services history that has impacted the delivery of services. In a 6- to 7-page report, complete the following:

    · Describe the issue, its background, and the key people who were involved.

    · Explain how the issue or these key people have changed or defined human services.

    · Discuss the issue and the key people’s impact on theory, practices, and ethics, and how these issues have changed service delivery systems.

    · Evaluate and discuss if the changes are still evident today or have become extinct.

Examples of issues may include, but are not limited to, the Civil Rights Movement, Family Medical Leave Act, GI Bill, work/life balance, and childhood vaccinations.

Based on the feedback you received on your submission from last week, submit a revised draft of your paper with this additional information:

Based on the feedback you received on your submission from last week, submit a revised draft of your paper with this additional information:

  1. Five additional references that could be used for your research paper and include a 1-2 sentence description for each of the five additional references, explaining how they fit with the research topic and the research question proposed. Make sure that these references come from scholarly sources using Argosy’s library resources.
