Gladwell Grocery Stores Case Scenario

Gladwell Grocery Stores has ten (10) stores in upstate New York. They have approximately 400 – 440 employees. Most of the employees are part time, with approximately 45% of them full time. The operations manager, Tom Bell, also acts as the HR manager and travels to each location each week to take care of recruiting, scheduling, hiring, and answering questions for the employees as needed. He also takes care of payroll using Excel spreadsheets and has computer software to print payroll checks.

Mr. Bell approaches you, an independent HR consultant and owner of your own consulting firm, for a proposal. He would like to greatly reduce his travel to each location each week, due to the increase in gasoline costs. He is curious to know if there is anything you can suggest in helping him complete his HR tasks more efficiently and in a cost-effective manner. He hopes there is some way he can do part of his HR tasks from his office instead of traveling to each location every week

Explain the impact of racial disparities in drug use and arrest rates on minority groups and communities and identify ways to address these disparities.

To complete this assignment, follow the steps below, pasting or typing the questions into a Microsoft Word document and responding to each question with thought and detail. Include a title page and a reference page in correct APA format. Incorporate in-text citations when you refer to the course material.

  1. To get started, first review data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), located in the Resources. The survey is a part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive, provided by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research. When you select one of the options, such as heroin use, you can then specify how the data is presented. To see statistics for heroin use based on race and ethnicity, select the “Heroin Use” link. Then select the following options in the drop-down lists:
    • Measure of Heroin Use: Select “Ever Used Heroin” first. Then select the other options to create additional graphs and charts as you would like.
    • Respondent Characteristics: Select “Race and Ethnicity.”
    • Confidence intervals: Use the default option, “(None displayed).”
    • Chart Options: Choose any of the options for viewing the chart, depending on how you would like the data to appear.

Repeat this procedure for the other illegal drugs on the list, including marijuana (illegal in most states), crack, and cocaine. You can open each table in a new tab in your browser, which makes it easier to compare the data.

Based on your review of the data, answer the following questions. Be sure to use specific data from the NSDUH charts and graphs to illustrate your points. Identify the name of the tables or graphs (for example, “Ever Used Heroin by Race” is the title of the table and graph produced when you followed the initial steps above).

Question 1: Describe differences in illegal drug use based on race and ethnicity. Which racial and ethnic groups are most likely to use each illegal drug? Your response should contain at least 150 words.

Next, take a look at drug arrests by race and ethnicity. This data is available on the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports Web site in their annual report, “Crime in the United States.” For the 2013 data on arrests, go to Persons Arrested, which is located in the Resources. You will see a list of table numbers on this page. Tables 43, 49, 55, 61, and 67 show data that include categories for race and ethnicity. Click on each table number to see the full tabular data. You will need to scroll down each table to look for the line labeled “Drug abuse violations.” Note that Table 43 provides the overall national picture regarding drug abuse arrests, while the other tables provide specific regional data based on the classifications of cities, counties, suburbs, and nonmetropolitan areas.

Based on your review of this data, answer the following questions. Be sure to use specific data from the FBI tables to support your points and clearly identify which tables you are referring to by specifying the table number.

Question 2: Describe differences in drug arrests based on race and ethnicity. Which racial and ethnic groups are most likely to be arrested for drug abuse violations? Your response should contain at least 150 words.

Question 3: Compare and contrast the data on drug use with drug arrests. What factors account for the discrepancy between who uses illegal drugs and who is arrested for drug abuse violations? To what extent have public policies or law enforcement strategies contributed to this disparity? Use at least one of this unit’s course readings to support your response. Your response should contain at least 250 words.

Question 4: What impact have the disparities you identified in Question 3 had on minorities and minority communities? What policy changes would you recommend for addressing these disparities? Discuss at least two potential solutions or strategies; these can be community-based, legislative (at the state or federal level), or law enforcement strategies. Your response should contain at least 250 words.

Requirements

  • Describe and analyze trends related to drug use and drug arrests based on race and ethnicity.
  • Address the connection between criminal justice policies and strategies and the racial and ethnic disparities in drug use and arrest rates.
  • Explain the impact of racial disparities in drug use and arrest rates on minority groups and communities and identify ways to address these disparities.
  • Refer to and cite the course material in correct APA format.
  • Ensure responses meet the minimum indicated word counts, with a total length of approximately 2–3 pages.

Describe the concepts of cognitive dissonance, wrongful obedience, corrupt judgment, and warranted excuses;

Excelsior College:BNS301: National Security Ethics and Divesity

M4D1: Ethical Breaches

In this module, we will explore the concepts presented in the readings and look for examples in our own lives (personal and professional) to illustrate (or disprove) them.  It seems as if ethical breeches are all around us. The media is replete with stories of how senior leaders in the military, government, business, and industry are exercising bad judgment.  These are people who seemingly have it all and should be beyond reproach. We will examine why some individuals exercise good judgement while others turn to corruption. It is important to take things apart, look at them and become aware of what they mean for us as human beings, leaders, and members of organizations and communities.

Let’s turn our attention to a discussion about the ethical concepts presented in this module and share some examples within our own organizations.

This activity addresses module outcomes 1-3. Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:

  • Describe the concepts of cognitive dissonance, wrongful obedience, corrupt judgment, and warranted excuses;
  • Analyze individual and organizational responses to wrongful obedience, bad judgment, and warranted excuses;
  • Analyze the pitfalls of the slippery slope syndrome at the strategic level and how strategic leaders can avoid them.

Please contribute at least one original post at least 300 words, due on Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.

Questions:

After completing the assigned readings for the module, please respond to the following questions in your initial post:

  1. In your analysis, provide examples from your organization where wrongful obedience, corrupt judgment, or warranted excuses may have come into play.  Describe what happened and what the response within the organization was.
  2. Describe an example of the “slippery slope syndrome” and analyze the situation and what might have been done to mitigate it.

Read the following employee profiles:

Employee #1

Jimmy Brown is a manager with Solomon Industries, Inc., (SII) a supply company in South Carolina. SII serves as a warehouse for other companies that deliver and store their goods using SII’s facility as temporary storage.   Jimmy was born in 1955 and spent 20 years in the military. Upon retiring, he was hired as a production supervisor for SII.  Originally from SC, he is the night shift supervisor working 12 hour shifts from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am Monday through Thursday supervising 12 employees.  Jimmy is a traditional Baby Boomer as he grew up in the 60’s, his dad worked, his mom stayed home, and he is the oldest of three children; a brother and a sister 2 and 4 years younger, respectively.  Jimmy received his bachelor of arts degree while in the military in chemical engineering.  Turnover is pretty high at SII as Jimmy is constantly training new employees. He had the option of moving to the day shift but he worked nights his whole military career and likes this shift so he asked to continue working this shift.   His present staff consists of 1 employee over the age of 50 and the rest of the employees range from 20-40 years of age.

Employee #2

Michael Johnson was born in 1976 in Ohio.  He has a technical background graduating in 1997 in computer science and moved to SC in 2010 with his new bride.   Michael’s parents divorced when he was 2 years old and he rarely saw his biological father. His mom worked two jobs almost 7 days a week until she remarried when he was 10. His step dad travelled often with his job and had two daughters from a previous marriage.  Their mom died 3 years before he married Michael’s mom.    Michael applied for the Information Technology position but at the last minute the position was closed because the employee decided not to leave the company so Michel took on the responsibility of being the day shift supervisor.  He works 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday with Solomon Industries, Inc., (SII) a supply company in South Carolina. SII serves as a warehouse for other companies that deliver and store their goods using SII’s facility as temporary storage.  Turnover is not as high as his night shift counterpart, but still has some turnover.   The company allows tenured employees to move to the shift they desire if positions are available.  Michael manages 15 employees, 8 are over the age of 50, 2 are new employees under 21 years old, and the remaining are between 21-50 years of age.

As a manager, you are tasked with creating a 350-word performance management plan for Employee 1 and Employee 2.

  • Include how your management approach would change to fit the employees’ needs
  • Assess the approaches you would use to monitor the behavior of each employee
    • What are the legal implications?
    • How would you evaluate the effectiveness of your approach?

How would you describe and interpret the turning point or epiphany in “Sonny’s Blues”?

Your initial post is due by midnight (11:59 PM) on Thursday and your response to your peers is due on Friday (by 11:59 PM) . You must write at least 400 words on James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues”After you finish writing your response make sure to write an original title that captures the main idea you are focusing on. You want to avoid having a generic title like ‘Discussion of “Sonny’s Blues”‘.Except for the first bullet point, you can address the rest in any order you choose.Your response should not be in the form of a numbered list: use the prompts below to write at least three paragraphs incorporating the prompts into your response. In one or two sentences state yourgeneral impression of “Sonny’s Blues”, describing what you interpret to be the story’s main theme (or central idea). Plot is not just the events that happen in a story, rather it is the way the writer sequences and paces the events so as to shape our responses and interpretations. How does Baldwin use sequencing (the order in which events are related) to develop the situation, point-of-view or key ideas you think the story is trying to represent)? All plots hinge on at least one conflict. What conflictsdrive the plot of “Sonny’s Blues”? Most stories move towards a turning point (a discovery or new insight) or an epiphany(a sudden revelation of truth). How would you describe and interpret the turning point or epiphany in “Sonny’s Blues”? Somewhere in your response interpret a description of aninnerorpsychological state. Baldwin is considered one of the masters of describing the inner life of characters. Read Baldwin’s essay “The Creative Process”. What aspects of that essay do you see reflected in “Sonny’s Blues”?
