Develop a business assessment for the company, focusing on managing employees from an HR perspective in a grocery store environment and retail industry.

Gladwell Grocery Stores Case Scenario

Gladwell Grocery Stores has ten (10) stores in upstate New York. They have approximately 400 – 440 employees. Most of the employees are part time, with approximately 45% of them full time. The operations manager, Tom Bell, also acts as the HR manager and travels to each location each week to take care of recruiting, scheduling, hiring, and answering questions for the employees as needed. He also takes care of payroll using Excel spreadsheets and has computer software to print payroll checks.

Mr. Bell approaches you, an independent HR consultant and owner of your own consulting firm, for a proposal. He would like to greatly reduce his travel to each location each week, due to the increase in gasoline costs. He is curious to know if there is anything you can suggest in helping him complete his HR tasks more efficiently and in a cost-effective manner. He hopes there is some way he can do part of his HR tasks from his office instead of traveling to each location every week.

Please post by Sunday at the latest so that I have time to go through it before I turn it in and it not be late. I have to turn this in by Monday at 9am. Please also make sure that all of the key points in the assignment are covered, including the conclusion. Thank you!

Assignment 1: Phase I – Business Assessment

Due Week 3 and worth 120 points

Read the details of the Gladwell Grocery Stores case scenario. In this assignment, you will provide Mr. Bell with an assessment of the current business based on the details of the scenario. You will describe the company in terms of size, industry, type of business, number of stores, etc., and explain to Mr. Bell why you think Gladwell Grocery Stores can benefit from an HRIS.

Assume your role as an HR consultant, and prepare a business assessment that addresses the following criteria.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

Introduction

  1. Assess the current situation for the company, focusing on the issues that the HR Manager is currently facing from not having an HRIS in place.

Business Assessment

  1. Develop a business assessment for the company, focusing on managing employees from an HR perspective in a grocery store environment and retail industry.

Identifiable Issues

Conclusion

  1. Explain two to three (2-3) reasons why the company would benefit from adopting an HRIS. Focus on how the HRIS would address the HR function you identified in your business assessment.
  2. Use at least (2) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources.
  3. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:a. Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.b. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, your professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.c. which was not refused, a protection of his confidentiality? If the matter is confidential, what can the physician say or do to protect the secret?

 Project: Confidentiality and Truthfulness

In each case, answer the questions at the end of the case and give researched references to support your assertions; also, explain what would be the ethical course of action and the legal requirements for action in the case.

You are required to follow APA formatting guidelines. This includes having a properly formatted title page, running header, page numbers, headers, in-text citations, no first/second person, citations, and reference list. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If you are unsure whether you are developing original work, follow my philosophy, “When in doubt, cite it out!”

Case One

Mary Stokes is in need of a kidney transplant, and her parents and siblings have been tested for compatibility. Her father is afraid of operations and knows that kidney trouble runs in the family. Before the test, Mary’s father tells the doctor that he does not want anyone, especially his wife, to know that he is compatible. He explains that if the family knows they will pressure him into being a donor. The father turns out to be the only one who is compatible. Mary asks the doctor, “Are you sure no one in my family is compatible?”

Is the father a patient and protected by confidentiality? Even if he is not a patient, is his explicit request, which was not refused, a protection of his confidentiality? If the matter is confidential, what can the physician say or do to protect the secret?

Case Two

Dr. Curious has a habit of wandering around the hospital and looking at the records of friends who are in the hospital. The nurses have tried to stop him, but he has retaliated by making their lives miserable and belittling them in public at every opportunity. The nursing administration has been notified but has done nothing, as it wants to avoid rocking the boat.

What are the nurses’ ethical obligations after they have done everything mentioned in the text? See Chapter 2 (Garrett). Is “not wanting to rock the boat” a sufficient excuse for the administration to do nothing further?

Explain the applicable concepts from the course. If your project is focused on a particular organization, explain how these concepts apply to that organization

This activity will give you an opportunity to demonstrate your comprehension and understanding of the field of human resource management.  It will allow you to show your grasp of the strategic role that HR plays in the organization.

Research Paper/Term Project:You will prepare and submit a research paper on a topic of your choice and approved by your instructor. This project is an opportunity for you to personalize the concepts you are learning in this course. The topics must be in the field of HRM or some application (e.g., an application of course concepts to your work situation; a research paper, using a survey/questionnaire to investigate a concept of interest and value; a detailed review of the literature about a concept from the course). You may consider other options; however, be sure to discuss your ideas with us.You must follow the format below for your term project report:

  1. Title: The title is a concise statement of the subject of the paper
  2. Abstract: The abstract is an “executive overview” of your paper. It should be a 50-to-l00 word summary that would be appropriate to give your manager so that he/she would know the essence of your project without reading the paper in its entirety.
  3. Table of Contents: In this section, list each section of your paper, with the page number. The list should include:
    • Tables and Figures if you included more than two;
    • Appendices, if included;
    • Bibliography or reference section listing sources used.
  4. Introduction: In this section, state the purpose of the paper in succinct, declarative sentences.  Convince your reader that the study will have a practical value and meaning for you and the study will be based upon the concepts studied in the course.
  5. Background and Significance: This section provides further justification of the need for your study. If your project examines a topic drawn from your work, you should include a description of your work environment, your position in the organization and how your position fits into the organization, both vertically and horizontally. Explain the applicable concepts from the course. If your project is focused on a particular organization, explain how these concepts apply to that organization. What is the organization doing well? Would it benefit by adopting some of the concepts you have been studying?
  6. Discussion, Implications and Recommendations: In this section, you should provide a thorough discussion of your findings and the implications of your study. Be sure to include only the pertinent implications.  You should also present your recommended action plan. This plan will vary based on the type of project you selected. For example, it may be a personal action plan for you follow in your present position or in a position which would enable you to put the plan into action. If your project is a literature review, then your recommendations may be focused on what issues need further research. Be sure that the recommendations are realistic in terms of the appropriate HR concepts and, if applicable, the organization you have studied.
  7. References: You cannot use your texts as your primary source of information. You must draw on other sources such as HR and business journals, information from an organization, and interviews with individuals who work in an HR position. Be sure that you support the information presented with appropriate references. It is important that all references and quotes correctly are cited correctly. All sources, including web sites must be referenced in the Bibliography or References list. You must follow an accepted authority for style and form (e.g., APA style).
  8. Appendices: Include a separate sheet and title for each appendix.

Keep in mind that all accepted rules of English composition apply. The LENGTH of the paper is not the primary measure of the QUALITY of the paper. A paper of 40-50 pages is probably too long for the purposes of this course. On the other hand, the purpose of this assignment cannot be properly satisfied in a paper of only 5 pages! As a guideline, you will probably need about 15 pages to present your research adequately.

Be sure that you cite all references and quotes correctly; all sources used must be referenced in the Bibliography or References section. If you have questions about the format or content of references, discuss it with your instructor.

Your report should consist of at least three pages, not including a title page and reference pages. Please be sure to use APA formatting for all sources, including your textbook.

Saltine crackers are purchased by over 80 of all households in the US. Sales promotions, includingfeatures, displays, and price reductions are extremely important in this category. The major brands areNabisco Premium, Keebler Zesta, and Sunshine Krispy. The data in the spreadsheet zesta.xls summarize sales all the stores in a US city for a total of 80 weeks. There are data on the sales (volume and dollar) of both Zesta and the category as a whole, as well asinformation on whether or not any form of feature or display activity for Zesta was present each week The brand manager for Zesta would like to know how its pricing and promotional activities affect itssales and, if so, by how much. You will need to create some new variables from the provided data. First, you need to compute the average competitor price — this can be derived from the category and Zesta sales data. Other variablesmay need to be created over time. Before you begin the analysis, describe your data. It is also useful to make use of graphs in order to get a“feel” for the data. 1. Analysis of Brand Sales: Linear Modela) Estimate a linear model to answer Zesta’s brand manager‘s question,b) Note that your outcome variable should be volume sales, not dollar sales — why?c) Interpret the regression outputs.d) Are you confident in your model? 2. Analysis of Brand Sales: Exponential Modela) Estimate an exponential model to answer Zesta’s brand manager’s question.b) What is Zesta’s own price elasticity? Interpret this.c) What is Zesta’s cross-price elastlcity? Interpret this. 3. What are some limitations of this dataset?

Moore Beer Reduction in Workforce

Moore Beer, Inc. is a 25 million dollar a year micro brewing company heavily involved in the direct marketing of its various micro brew products.  In order to cash in on the internet selling boom, Moore Beer, Inc. opened two new online marketing and direct distribution channels.

Soon after these websites went live, technology problems, together with sluggish sales killed the company’s profits.  As a result, the company has decided to abandon its new direct marketing plan and to reduce its workforce.

You are the Vice President (VP) of Human Resources (HR) for Moore Beer, Inc.  The President of the company has asked you to terminate the employment for a number of employees.  He has given you a list of people to consider and has charged you with writing a paper describing which employees to terminate, the reasons for each termination and the legal risks with each particular employee in terms of post termination litigation.

Your job as VP of HR:  You must terminate three (3) of these employees.  Two employees may be folded into existing openings in the rest of the company.

Here are the employees:

Roger Jones:  Roger is a 34-year-old male, who is originally from a country in Asia. His overall track record with the company is above average.  His productivity is above the median although other employees complain that they have difficulty understanding him because he speaks English with a heavy accent. This has been a problem when he is answering calls from employees at the company information systems help desk. He has achieved no special honors or awards while employed with the company.  He has a Bachelors degree in Information Systems from a good University.  His job duties include maintaining existing computer systems which will be obsolete after the reduction in force.  He has had no absenteeism.

Patrick Pierce:  Pat is a 32-year-old male who is Caucasian, and originally from Texas.  His overall track record with the company is average.  His productivity is average.  He has been solely responsible for much of the quality programming which took place in the program being abandoned.  He holds no advanced degree but his experience in the Navy has given him practical experience that goes beyond the abandoned programs.  However, Pat seems to have an absenteeism problem, missing 17 days in the last two months.  Pat has recently let you know that he suffers from a chronic illness and he feels like others in the company have been treating him differently because of his illness.

Sally Jones:  Sally is a 55-year-old Caucasian female.  She is beloved at the company for her friendliness and willingness to help others.  Sally is an administrative assistant assigned to the overall organization of the failed marketing endeavor.  Although it failed, it is generally thought that Sally did a great job in her administrative tasks.  Sally has been with the company for 20 years and is a single mother with a young son in college.  Terminating Sally will cause immediate financial hardship for her.  Sally has missed 13 days in the last two months.

Margaret Johnson:  Margaret is a 28-year-old African American female. She is a very dynamic salesperson.  Although most of the new division’s sales came from Margaret’s hard work, she is generally perceived to be a ladder climber and puller and out only for herself.  She is not perceived to be a team player although it is widely recognized that she is smart and talented.  Margaret is very active in the local chapter of a civil rights group and, on several occasions in the past, has complained on behalf of other employees when she believed they were not being treated fairly.  She has missed two months work in the last 12 months.

Sasha Williams:  Sasha is a 30-year-old female. She is originally from South America, and is fluent in 3 languages in addition to English, which is very helpful to the company’s marketing efforts.  She holds a Bachelors degree in Advertising and was the public relations person assigned to the team.  When at work, Sasha does a very good job but she has missed multiple days lately because she is early in a pregnancy.  Sasha’s husband has recently lost his job and she has expressed to you her concerns for her job and continued health care during her pregnancy.  She recognizes her attendance problems and has promised to be better in her attendance just as soon as she gets past her morning sickness.
