why do you think both examples demonstrates the cultural differences reflected through your chosen frame?

Superficial American and silent Finns are remarks Donal Carbaugh collected after spending several months in Finland. Carbaugh learned the implicit rules behind a “small talk” in Finland is very different from the rules guiding a small talk in the US. In Finland, the following rules should be respected:

1. one should not state what is obvious;

2. if speaking, one should say something worthy of everyone’s attention;

3. one should not invoke topics or themes that are contentious or conflictual (or more positively, one should keep present relations on harmonious ground);

4. one should b personally committed to or invested in what one says;

5. what you say properly—-the un-obvious, socially worthwhile, non-contentious, personally involving statements—-forms a basis for subsequent interactions and social relations (Carbaugh, 2005, p. 42).

We will use this list of rules in Finland to open our discussion this week. Please address the following:

1 [claim] among the four maxims of verbal communication set forth by Grice, which one do you think can be best used to explain the different rules regarding “small talk” in Finland and the US, hence the distinction between “superficial American” and “silent Finns”?

2 [definition] what are the four maxims usually used to analyze verbal communications styles in an intercultural context, according to Grice?

3 [example] what can be an example from Donal Carbaugh’s account in Finland that reflects one end of your chosen maxim or dimension, and why? what can be an American example from your daily communication experience that may also resonate with this dimension?

4 [explanation] why do you think both examples demonstrates the cultural differences reflected through your chosen frame?

Explain whether or not you believe a manager could, or should, use the same types of channels to relay a message. Would it be effective?

Instructions

For this assignment, you will research the different ways that managers and leaders use communication to guide their organizations.

Feel free to use the same organization you researched for the Unit VI Case Study. You are not limited to this organization, but it may be easier to complete the assignment since you have already researched the organization in Unit VI. You can use the same sources for both assignments, if applicable.

Find an instance where the organizational leader communicates directly with his or her employees, investors, or customers. Analyze the message, the channel, and the potential for feedback. Do you believe that it is effective? Do you believe that it is the same type of message that a manager would send? Why, or why not?

Remember to focus on the communication styles of both leaders and managers. Strive for an equal balance between the two types of communication styles in your assignment.

Example: The Apple events that occur in Cupertino whenever Apple unveils a new product or service are examples of the type of communication you should be analyzing in this assignment. During the events, CEO Tim Cook addresses an audience of employees, investors, and the general public. Cook uses multiple channels to communicate with the audience, including a live face-to-face discussion, live streaming of the discussion, and a recorded video. For the assignment, you would view one of the events, analyze Cook’s message and the effectiveness of the channels, and discuss the potential for feedback. Analyze whether or not the message is an effective example of leadership. Explain whether or not you believe a manager could, or should, use the same types of channels to relay a message. Would it be effective?

Note: You do not need to use Apple for this assignment. It is provided as an example only.

Use the standard five-paragraph format (introduction/body/conclusion). Include at least two academic sources. APA format should be used. The assignment should be a minimum of two pages in length, not including the title and reference pages. Content, organization, and grammar/mechanics will be evaluated.

Your response should be four (4) double-spaced pages; refer to the “Assignment Format” page located on the Course Home page for specific format requirements.

Part A: Written and Oral Communication Skills

Locate a website for an organization that hires graduates in your major. Besides technical skills, what writing and communication skills does this organization seek in a job candidate? Write a one-page essay on what they say directly on this subject. Include reasons why each skill is important, and any additional written/spoken skills that you believe would give a candidate a competitive advantage.

From media, personal experience, or the Internet, identify an example of each of the following sources of distortion (faulty causal and/or statistical inference) for the following:

a.       A study with questionable sponsorship or motives

b.      Reliance on insufficient evidence/hasty generalization

c.       Unbalanced or biased presentation

d.      Unexamined assumptions

e.       Faulty causal reasoning

Part D: Checklist for Style – Local Newspaper

Using the “Checklist for Style” on the following page (also found in Chapter 11 of your textbook), rewrite the following letter to a local newspaper.

In the absence of definitive studies regarding the optimum length of the school day, I can only state my personal opinion based upon observations based by me and upon teacher observations that have been conveyed to me. Considering the length of the present school day, it is my opinion that the day is excessive length-wise for most elementary pupils, certainly for almost all of the primary children.

To find my answer to the problem requires consideration of two ways in which the problem may be viewed. One way focuses upon the needs of the children, while the other focuses upon logistics, transportation, scheduling, and other limits imposed by the educational system. If it is necessary to prioritize these two ideas, it would seem reasonable to give the first consideration to the primary reason for the very existence of the system, i.e., to meet the educational needs of the children the system is trying to serve.

Reflect on your employment history. Were there times you felt you did not receive the pay you felt you were entitled?

1.Imagine that you are starting your own home improvement business and will need 10 workers of varying skills. Would you prefer to hire employees or independent contractors? If you would prefer employees, what type of employee would best fit your needs? Explain your rationale and the expected effect on your business.

2Imagine you own a home improvement business that is trying to keep up with increased demand and is rapidly growing. You need to hire several new employees in key roles, including finance and human resources. You want to make sure you get the hire right the first time. Explain whether you will use an unstructured or a structured interview approach in hiring your workers. Explain your rationale and the expected effect on your business. What concerns do you have about the process?

3Many states have attempted to introduce laws directed at anti-bullying in the workplace. Reflect on and share an experience where you or someone you know have been the subject of bullying in the workplace. Do you feel bullying in the workplace is a problem that warrants a legislative response? How does this experience (or lack of experience) influence your position on the requirement of legislation?

4Some employers must provide unpaid leave for family- and medical-related reasons under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Paid leave is not required by federal law; however, it is required by some state and local laws.

Have you or someone you know ever experienced a situation where there was a need for unpaid family leave? (If not, imagine you are now in that situation in your current workplace.) Did you agree with the policy that was in place at the time? Why, or why not? As you describe and reflect on the situation, your reaction, and rationale, consider the impact of unpaid family leave laws on the employer. Does it alter your perspective.

5Reflect on your employment history. Were there times you felt you did not receive the pay you felt you were entitled? Perhaps you did work outside your job description, performed work off the clock, or felt you were not paid commensurate with your skill level or your coworkers’ pay. Did or could you have taken any steps to address the issue? Share your thoughts on the experience. Was there anything different you feel the employer could or should have done?

explain how the museum could change the exhibit, and how that change would enhance the viewers’ understanding of the art.

Now that you have explored fully all the dilemmas that a museum faces in displaying African art, it’s time to assess the pitfalls in person.

Visit the De Young Museum collection of African and Oceanic art (on the second floor), as well as the their collection of ancient art of the Americas (on the first floor). Or, visit the small collection of African and Oceanic art in the Crocker Museum in Sacramento.

For five points extra credit, please compare the Crocker and De Young displays.

  • In your analysis, address one or more of the balancing acts that museums face, and note to what extent the museum is successful, or not, in achieving that balance. Be sure to provide specific examples from the museum displays to make your case.

I would like you to cite at least two different scholarly sources to support your analysis of the museum display.

  • Also select a particular work from one of these collections, and research its meaning and use, beyond what the museum and its website tell you (you may need to expand your research to include similar types of artwork, since little information may be available about that particular piece). Consider how the museum presents the work (its location, “neighborhood,” wall text, etc.), and assess the effectiveness of the presentation, based on your research beyond the museum.

I would like you to cite at least two different scholarly sources to support your analysis of the artwork you picked.

  • Finally, explain how the museum could change the exhibit, and how that change would enhance the viewers’ understanding of the art. Again, give specific examples, and keep in mind that the museum’s budget (and space) is limited!
