Dynamics: Where does the music get louder or softer? Is there any apparent reason for those changes? b) Timbre: Where do instruments take over the melody or a solo passage?

The principles of unity & variety apply to all music, regardless of compositional style or historical period.

Now that you are familiar with the concepts in the first section of the course (Basic Musical Concepts), and you have seen how they work on different pieces of music, try your hand, mouse, and ears at how they operate in a music selection that you may not have heard yet.

Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White (4:08)

Your analysis should include:

  1. The number of different musical ideas in the piece (for example, can we say that there are two ideas A and B? Or is there only one?)
  2. The timings (start and stop times) of the different sections of the piece. (Hint: Listen for changes in musical ideas and timbre, for example, points when different instruments come in or give way to others.)
  3. How unity and variety are exemplified in those sections through the use of:

a) Dynamics: Where does the music get louder or softer? Is there any apparent reason for those changes?

b) Timbre: Where do instruments take over the melody or a solo passage?

c) Pitch: What is the general pitch level of the piece? Are there wide variations in pitch level?

  1. Although there are sections that feature one instrument over others, whether you think this is a piece for a solo performer or for an ensemble
  2. A list of the characteristics of the musical style closest to the one this piece exemplifies. (Hint: Look at the last lecture in the first section of the course)
  3. Whether you think this piece serves (or could serve) a specific purpose.
  4. Whether or not it has any specific connotation(s) for you.

Now, management is considering a new plan that involves a floating holiday that each employee may choose.

Assignment 4 – Writing Application 4.2

Employee Holiday Options E-mail Message – Instructions

In the past your company offered all employees 11 holidays, starting with New Year’s Day in January and proceeding through Christmas Day the following December.  Other companies offer similar holiday schedules.  In addition, your company has given all employees one floating holiday.  That day was determined by a companywide vote.  As a result, all employees had the same day off.  Now, management is considering a new plan that involves a floating holiday that each employee may choose.  If two people wanted the same day, the employee with the most seniority would have the day off.

As a member of the Human Resources staff, you are asked to write an e-mail to employees.  The email provides information on options for employee holidays and asks them to make a choice.  You need to think carefully about the alternatives presented in the textbook (see Writing Application 4.2: Employee Holiday Options, page 318) .  The textbook explanation gives you all of the information and you may be creative in describing the alternatives; however, make sure to include the important information described in the different alternatives.  Since the information needs collected, reviewed and created as company policy make sure to establish an end date for employees to select a preference and inform you.

Use the e-mail model in Figure A.1, Appendix A, Page 491 of the textbook for the e-mail message format.  Also, remember to submit the assignment as an MSWord file (see instructions above for Submitting Assignments).

    Use Answer/ Question Method

Each part has to be at least 500 each

In December 2015, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) violated federal law, including anti-lobbying rules, by using social media to try to gain support for the agency having expanded regulatory authority under the Clean Water Act over ponds, ditches, and other waterways. The GAO found this use of taxpayer funds violated the law because the EPA sent government-sponsored messages without identifying them as coming from the agency, and by including in a blog post hyperlinks to other organizations that directly solicited readers to contact Congress in support of expanding the EPA’s enforcement authority.

Consider this use of social media by the EPA and watch the following video before responding to the following questions.

Analyze the message, the channel, and the potential for feedback. Do you believe that it is effective? Do you believe that it is the same type of message that a manager would send? Why, or why not?

Unit VII Mini Project Open

Instructions

For this assignment, you will research the different ways that managers and leaders use communication to guide their organizations.

Feel free to use the same organization you researched for the Unit VI Case Study. You are not limited to this organization, but it may be easier to complete the assignment since you have already researched the organization in Unit VI. You can use the same sources for both assignments, if applicable.

Find an instance where the organizational leader communicates directly with his or her employees, investors, or customers. Analyze the message, the channel, and the potential for feedback. Do you believe that it is effective? Do you believe that it is the same type of message that a manager would send? Why, or why not?

Remember to focus on the communication styles of both leaders and managers. Strive for an equal balance between the two types of communication styles in your assignment.

Example: The Apple events that occur in Cupertino whenever Apple unveils a new product or service are examples of the type of communication you should be analyzing in this assignment. During the events, CEO Tim Cook addresses an audience of employees, investors, and the general public. Cook uses multiple channels to communicate with the audience, including a live face-to-face discussion, live streaming of the discussion, and a recorded video. For the assignment, you would view one of the events, analyze Cook’s message and the effectiveness of the channels, and discuss the potential for feedback. Analyze whether or not the message is an effective example of leadership. Explain whether or not you believe a manager could, or should, use the same types of channels to relay a message. Would it be effective?

Note: You do not need to use Apple for this assignment. It is provided as an example only.

Use the standard five-paragraph format (introduction/body/conclusion). Include at least two academic sources. APA format should be used. The assignment should be a minimum of two pages in length, not including the title and reference pages. Content, organization, and grammar/mechanics will be evaluated.

Identify an authentic example of suspected or proven sexual harassment from your professional experience.

Julie has been a nurse at Memorial Hospital for three years. During that time, she has developed productive relationships with her colleagues and has earned a reputation for providing exceptional care to patients. One day she approaches you, her manager, and asks to speak in private. Once you are alone, Julie explains that over the past couple of months she has heard a physician and two nurses repeatedly make disparaging remarks about people who are homosexual. She appears visibly upset as she tells you this. Julie says that the situation has become so uncomfortable that she no longer feels safe in this environment.

Does this scenario reflect a possible case of sexual harassment? How would you respond to Julie, and what steps might you take next?

Sexual harassment is an important topic in today’s organizations–one that is often addressed through HR presentations and trainings. However, even for experienced nurse managers and HR professionals, it can be challenging to recognize some of the behaviors and actions that may indicate sexual harassment. Nurses in leadership and management positions have a critical responsibility to become attuned to the various interactions that can be problematic, including inappropriate remarks and jokes, improper fraternization, quid pro quo situations, and potentially offensive images.

To prepare

  • Review the articles, “Sexual Harassment – A Touchy Subject for Nurses,” “Why Are Nurses Leaving? Findings from an Initial Qualitative Study on Nursing,” and “Bullying, Harassment, and Horizontal Violence in the Nursing Workforce.” Consider sexual harassment situations most commonly experienced by nurses.
  • Think about a work environment with which you are familiar. Have you witnessed or experienced any behaviors that–perhaps with the benefit of hindsight and increasing awareness–may be construed as sexual harassment, even if you did not think of them that way at the time? Do you recall any instances in which you might have intentionally or unintentionally contributed to or participated in an environment that tolerated harassment against one or more individuals? If so, what were your thoughts and feelings at the time? How, perhaps, has your perspective since shifted?
  • Select one of the following options:
    • Option 1: Conduct research via the Walden Library, or other scholarly sites, to select an article that presents an authentic example of workplace sexual harassment.
    • Option 2: Identify an authentic example of suspected or proven sexual harassment from your professional experience.
  • Conduct research related to your selected example to assess the ramifications that may result from instances of sexual harassment.
  • Consider how you could partner with HR to mitigate situations of sexual harassment in your workplace. In addition, think about specific steps you could take to diminish inappropriate behaviors in the workplace.

To complete

By Day 7

Submit a 3- to 5-page paper in which you do the following:

  • Describe an authentic example of suspected or proven sexual harassment.
    • Explain how this specific instance of sexual harassment impacted the workplace.
    • Identify at least two legal ramifications that could have (or did) result from this situation and how they could (or did) negatively impact the workplace.
    • Briefly explain other ramifications (e.g., organizational culture, staff relationships, individual and team performances, patient safety, quality of care) that could have (or did) result because of this specific instance.
    • Describe the actions that were taken to resolve the situation, if applicable.
  • Formulate an action plan that can be used to mitigate and/or ameliorate behaviors that constitute sexual harassment.
    • Based on your example, explain how you would educate staff on the identification and prevention of inappropriate behaviors. Describe at least two specific steps you would take to diminish similar sexual harassment situations.
    • Describe at least two ways you could partner with HR to effectively accomplish your action plan.

NOTE: For the purposes of this assignment, please do not reveal the name of your workplace or the individuals involved.

Reminder: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references.
