How will issues in the corrections system affect you as a criminal justice professional? Which aspects of the corrections system will be most important for you to be knowledgeable of when interacting with other agencies, colleagues, or citizens?

CRJ499: Undergraduate Capstone in Criminal Justice

Week 9 Journal Entry: The Correction System

Week 9 Assignment 1 – Journal: The Corrections System

Please respond to the following:

  • How will issues in the corrections system affect you as a criminal justice professional?
  • Which aspects of the corrections system will be most important for you to be knowledgeable of when interacting with other agencies, colleagues, or citizens?

you have been asked to research and analyze the prevalence and persistence of institutionalized discrimination that is based on race and ethnicity. You will explore both the causes and consequences of institutionalized discrimination, from the perspective of the individuals it directly affects, the institution you have chosen, and society as a whole.

Create a public information product of your choice that is based on data related to a diversity issue. Your product should be at least 1,500 written words, or 10-15-minutes in length if spoken.

Often, discrimination is discussed as a primarily individual phenomenon—one-on-one actions in which one person discriminates against another. But as you have learned through your studies and research, some discrimination occurs at the institutional level, despite laws and policies that have been created to reduce or eliminate structural racism.

In this assessment, you examine how different experiences for minority groups may reflect a dominant culture that practices systemic discrimination in treatment or access to valued resources. You will examine the extent to which institutional discrimination occurs within a specific institution, such as the criminal justice system or the health care system. A key part of this assessment is incorporating data to support your analysis, something that is also integral to the work that sociologists do. You will also reflect upon and discuss feasible strategies for addressing the institutional inequality uncovered during your research.

Demonstration of Proficiency

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the course competencies through the following assessment scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Describe theoretical ideas of power in relation to policy.
    • Create a public information piece that conveys a central tenet regarding institutional inequality.
  • Competency 3: Analyze the effects of social policy using aggregated data.
    • Analyze data to make valid sociological inferences.
  • Competency 4: Analyze how laws are applied or created based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, and social class.
    • Describe factors contributing to racial and ethnic disparities within the criminal justice system.
    • Assess the impact that institutional discrimination within the justice system has had on minorities and minority communities.
    • Explain ways in which public policies are linked to racial and ethnic disparities within the criminal justice system.
    • Describe policy strategies for reducing institutional discrimination.
  • Competency 6: Communicate effectively.
    • Write coherently to support a central idea in appropriate format and with few errors of grammar, usage, and mechanics.

Instructions

This assessment asks you to demonstrate a deep understanding of institutional discrimination through both research and data analysis.

For the purposes of this assessment, you will assume that you are a consultant working for a bipartisan think tank studying one major institution: the criminal justice system, the health care system, the education system, the workplace, or the housing market. In particular, you have been asked to research and analyze the prevalence and persistence of institutionalized discrimination that is based on race and ethnicity. You will explore both the causes and consequences of institutionalized discrimination, from the perspective of the individuals it directly affects, the institution you have chosen, and society as a whole.

It is your job to create a public information piece that highlights your findings regarding racial and ethnic inequities within your chosen institution. You will need to support your conclusions with credible data and scholarly research, rather than relying on opinion, and demonstrate your ability to apply sociological thinking to your topic.

The first step to prepare for this assessment is to research the topic of institutional discrimination in a specific institution, locating reliable, scholarly sources. Some suggested sources can be found in the Resources for this assessment.

Using scholarly research and data, support and communicate the position of a bipartisan think tank group by creating a public information product. The final product should convey the extent to which institutional policies and practices—in the justice system, in the education system, in health care, in the workplace, or in the housing market—disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities. Choose from one of the following public information pieces:

  • Information booklet targeted to the general public.
  • Position paper or brief targeted at state or federal legislators.
  • Mock web site or blog.
  • Public service announcement (a script for a radio or television program).
  • PowerPoint presentation targeted to a specific audience, with a description of the audience and detailed speaker’s notes.
  • A recorded speech to be given at a national meeting of practitioners who work in the institution you are researching. If you choose this option, include your speaker’s notes or script and references in a Word document along with your audio file.

The final, professional-quality product should accomplish the following:

  • Convey the causes and consequences of the problem of institutional discrimination in one of society’s major institutions.
  • Use formatting and design principles that are appropriate for your chosen product.
  • Include graphics—such as photos, charts, graphs, and figures—to enhance the presentation when appropriate.
  • Support your conclusions with data and scholarly research.
  • Describe and analyze data on racial and ethnic disparities in the chosen institution.
    • Keep in mind that to be accurate in your assessment, you will need to look at raw data and percentages as well as to consider the data in relation to each racial or ethnic group’s percentage within the overall U.S. population.
  • Discuss the extent to which policies at the local, state, and/or federal level have contributed to racial and ethnic disparities.
    • Consider any historical or contemporary influences that may have contributed the disparities you have identified.
    • As an example, if you are studying institutional discrimination in the justice system, you would need to consider national policies such as the War on Drugs as well as law enforcement policies.
  • Assess the impact these disparities, along with institutional discrimination within your chosen institution more broadly, have had on racial and ethnic minorities and minority communities.
  • Present at least two potential solutions or strategies to combat the problems identified in your analysis.
    • These can be community-based, legislative (at the local, state, or federal level), or law-enforcement strategies.
    • These strategies should be focused on reducing institutional discrimination within the institution itself.

Additional Requirements

  • Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • Length: The completed public information piece should contain at least 1,500 words. If you choose to record a speech, it should be a 10- to 15-minute speech.
  • Format: Cite your sources in current APA style and format, including a reference list at the end of your document or presentation along with in-text citations of your sources.
  • Sources: Cite at least one of the data sources provided in the Resources. Three additional scholarly sources are required.

Identify at least two academic and at least two professional individuals or teams to collaborate with to be successful in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

When was the last time you read Meditation XVII of John Donne’s Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions?

Unless you are a student of seventeeth-century poetry, you may not be all that familiar with this piece. However, you may be much more familiar with one of its well-known phrases: “No man is an island…”.

As you begin your journey toward achieving your academic and professional goals, you have a great opportunity to network with academics and professionals who can help ensure you do not travel alone. This network can help to clarify your own vision for success and can help guide you now and in the future. To paraphrase Donne, no one is an island.

Begin creating an academic and professional network by identifying which academic and professional connections and resources with which you need to collaborate to succeed in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

To Prepare:

  • Consider individuals, departments, teams, and/or resources within Walden University and within your profession that you believe can support your academic and professional success.
  • Identify at least two academic and at least two professional individuals, colleagues, or teams that might help you succeed in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

The purpose of a rhetorical analysis is to allow you to gain familiarity with rhetorical strategies that authors use to appeal to their readers so that you can understand these strategies and introduce them into your own writing

Unit 1: Rhetorical Analysis

Rough Draft Due: Submit Unit 1 (Rhetorical Analysis) to the dropbox labeled “Unit 1 (Rhetorical Analysis) Rough Draft” by Wednesday, March 3rd at 9:35 a.m. (Central Time) (This essay must be completed according to the assignment guidelines outlined in the assignment sheet for the author to receive credit for completing the assignment and to be eligible to participate in the peer review session)

Final Draft Due: Unit 1 (Rhetorical Analysis) due in dropbox marked “Unit 1 (Rhetorical Analysis) Final Draft” by Monday, March 8th at 11:59 p.m. (Central Time)

Purpose: The purpose of a rhetorical analysis is to allow you to gain familiarity with rhetorical strategies that authors use to appeal to their readers so that you can understand these strategies and introduce them into your own writing. In order to do this, you must shift your focus from critiquing an author’s argument to analyzing the way that the author makes the argument. The difference between these two objectives, at first, may seem confusing; however, what is important to keep in mind in performing a rhetorical analysis is that you are examining the way that the author formulates the argument and not the argument itself.

Tasks (How to write this essay):

  • Write a minimum of 5-6 pages (Must be a minimum of halfway down on the last page for it to count as a page). The essay must also include a correctly-formatted works cited page that does not count toward the 5-6 page minimum page count.
  • Write for an academic audience (No contractions, no slang, no clichés, no first- or second-person perspective).
  • The writer should start by choosing either “Pop Culture Reckoned With #MeToo in Radical New Ways in 2020—Even as It Receded From Headlines” by Eliana Dockterman at: https://time.com/5924015/sexual-misconduct-movies-tv-me-too/ (also linked on eLearn under “Content”) or THE ONE I CHOOSE: “How Black Lives Matter Changed Hip-Hop and R&B” by Greg Tate at: https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/how-blacklivesmatter-changed-hip-hop-and-rb-in-2015-61161/ (also linked on eLearn under “Content”). Please only choose one article.
  • The essay’s argument (thesis) should focus on the effectiveness of the rhetoric of the source article, and it should not comment on the article’s content. For example, the author should not comment on whether or not s/he agrees with the material in the article.
  • The essay should utilize one body paragraph with a brief (200 word) summary of the main arguments of the article.
  • The essay should devote one paragraph to exploring how each of the following concepts impacts the article: target audience, ethos, logos, pathos, counterargument(s), and fallacies.
  • Each body paragraph (except for the summary) should include a minimum of one quotation from the article to support the author’s argument for that paragraph (topic sentence).
  • Citation: The writer should provide correctly-formatted signal phrases/attributive tags for all summaries, paraphrases, and quotations that reference material from sources, and correctly-formatted in-text citations must be provided for all paraphrases and quotations. Furthermore, a works cited page must document all sources and be formatted according to MLA guidelines.
  • Research: You should not research for this assignment. This assignment is based solely on the analysis of the article. Research does not help you here. However, if you do decide to research, then you must accurately cite the information that comes from sources. Please see me if you use research so that I can help you to cite your sources correctly.
  • Format: The essay should be formatted according to MLA guidelines, which are accessible in your textbook or through the Purdue Online Writing Lab.
  • Grammar and mechanics: Has ability to write using edited American English. Proofread and edit for issues that include, but are not limited to, those regarding spelling and word usage. Subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, run-on sentences, sentence fragments, fused sentences, absence or misuse of apostrophes, and absence or misuse of commas exemplify other problematic issues.

Skills (Learning Outcomes Achieved): Demonstrate understanding of and ability to read and respond to

the demands of the rhetorical situation (author, audience, and

subject) in both oral and written communication.

Read critically and analyze various types of assigned readings on

the basis of structure, pattern, and meaning in order to produce

original papers that show development of topic through

organization (such as topic sentence, support of the central idea

through details, and rhetorical patterns).

Invent, write, revise, edit, and rewrite formal essays in response

to readings which develop appropriate rhetorical patterns (i.e.,

narration, example, process, comparison/contrast, classification,

cause/effect, definition, argumentation) and other special

function(s) (i.e., literary analysis or research) while

demonstrating writing skills from process to product.

Produce final papers that show growth in principles of good

writing, such as organization (e.g., introduction/body/conclusion

or outlining), development (clarifying transitions between

sentences and paragraphs), unity (connected ideas), and which

demonstrate an understanding of the substance of the topic.

Complete at least one writing assignment that demonstrates a

limited use of MLA documentation form and basic research

ability.

Participate in collaborative work with other students via small

group discussions and presentations, workshop-style classes

devoted to particular issues (such as paragraph structure or voice

and tone), and produce, accept, and use constructively feedback

from writing instructors, other students, and other university

writers/instructors to take control of your own writing.

Create mechanically sound papers relatively free of errors in

grammar and mechanics.

Criteria for success: Please consult with the rubric for this assignment.
