Write 6 pages thesis on the topic civil engineering design

With the advent of automobiles, the need for transportation between Oakland and San Francisco increased. Therefore, the California Legislature developed a California Toll Bridge Authority in 1929 which was responsible for the construction of the bridge, joining San Francisco and Oakland. The route that was chosen for the construction of the bridge passes through Yerba Buena Island which was, at that time, being used as a US naval base. This route was chosen as it significantly reduced bridge length, construction cost, and labor. But before starting the construction of the bridge, permission from the US congress was required for the construction over Yerba Buena Island, which was finally obtained in1931.

The realization of Bay Bridge Construction started with the establishment of the California Toll Bridge Authority in 1929 and a number of unemployed people got employment. Initially, fourteen designs were submitted for the Bay Bridge. The final design consisted of a cantilever bridge from Oakland to Yerba Buena and a suspension bridge from Yerba Buena to San Francisco. Both the bridges were joined by boring a tunnel on Yerba Buena Island.

The Bay Bridge was first designed by Charles H. Purcell who was a civil engineer by profession. This was the longest bridge designed at that time and designing and analysis of such a mega project was a big deal at that time. The bay bridge was designed in two sections which were then connected by making use of a tunnel. Both the sections were designed differently according to the climatic conditions and land of both the regions. Also, water depth was not the same in the two areas which were joined by the bridge. The San Francisco region was covered in the western span of the bridge and that portion of the bridge was designed on the principle of the suspension bridge. This suspension bridge was having heightened towers with long spans to provide flexibility and strength to the&nbsp.design. whereas, the eastern section is having a blend of truss and cantilever design.

Create a 6 pages page paper that discusses the analysis of the images of jesus christ.

Jesus is described in the Holy Bible as Holy and with such holiness are other important characteristics that are in line with the righteousness God wants to impart to His people.

From the dictionary definition, a shepherd is someone who looks after the herd of sheep by guarding and tending them. A shepherd is someone tasked to lead the herd of sheep in the safest and abundant place. It is necessary for the herd of sheep to be tended in the green pasture with a fresh source of water flowing in abundance. In this way, the herd of sheep will survive and they are given all the essentials they need.

The psalm of David in chapter 23 describes God as shepherd full of righteousness. God is revealed by David as a Good Shepherd, and since Jesus is the Son of God (John 3:16), it is implied that the Son and the Father have the same characteristics and they are working together for one common good and that is the salvation of the humanity from eternal condemnation (Matthew 1: 18-21).

In John 10:14, Jesus said he is a good shepherd and part of being such is to know his people and his people to him. He sacrificed his life for humanity to bring salvation to all. Jesus has great compassion for the people of God. Such compassion can be clearly defined by the great love Jesus is willing to give for humanity. He gave up his life for humanity and such is the great manifestation of his universal and unconditional love.

The image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd depicts the meaning of a good servant and a leader. Being a good servant or a leader, therefore, requires following Jesus as far as biblical principles are deemed important. In fact, being a Christian means following Jesus whatever the cost may be.

A Christian minister can be considered a shepherd because of the responsibility to care for and guide a group of people in the ministry. Jesus as the Good Shepherd is therefore a remarkable model of every Christian minister who is responsible to lead the beloved people of God.

Create a 2 pages page paper that discusses organization management: the importance of professional satisfaction.

This is due to the fact that jobs like this require long hours of work and travel not to mention a high level of stress. In the process, some dimension of the individual’s personal life is affected just like the case of as David Clark, the Vice President for Global Marketing for MTV who rarely sees his son due to the demands of his job. While he stayed on the job and still grateful to have a job that others wanted, it is still not for everybody as we can see on the rate of turnovers with this kind of jobs. Other’s would prefer a less satisfying professional job for as long as they can fulfill their need for love and belongingness which their family provides.

The nature of the job which provides professional satisfaction to the individual increases the level of job satisfaction. More especially if the work pays well and able to meet the individuals’ other needs such as the need for self-esteem provided by a job, belongingness that is provided by the organization and the self-actualization of work. Every company strives for its employees to be satisfied with their job to avoid turnovers that could be costly for the company.

When employees are satisfied with their jobs, they will naturally tend to do a good job which will translate to positive job performance. They will also identify with the organization which could affect the behavior of their corporate citizenship. As such, they will put on long hours of work with their own initiative knowing that it is required of the job. Employees also who identify with their organization will tend to do other functions that are beyond their job description for as long as it is good for the overall well-being of the company. In short, they will do the extra mile with the company when they feel belonging to the organization. Above all, a happy and satisfied customer will stick with the company thus avoiding turnovers.

People are motivated differently when they do a particular job. While others are motivated with positive reinforcements as motivation, there are other employees whose best instinct comes out when they know things are going bad. This is the case of David Clark, the Vice President for Global Marketing for MTV who quipped that he is motivated knowing the fact that there are others who would like to have his job. This instinct is especially heightened during a crisis when people are losing their jobs and their homes that others would just be too eager to do his job. It may be a negative motivation but it prompts him to do a good job and be satisfied with what he is doing knowing that the alternative would be far from the ideal.

Write 5 pages with APA style on The Volunteerism and Community Service

When I witnessed the American Red Cross activities as a volunteer, my aim in mind was to make a difference by helping fellow Americans. When I completed the ten-hour volunteer work, little, did I know that it was just a glimpse of a wonderful life of volunteerism? I wanted to transform the ten hours into days, or months, or years. My life was transformed by the short time I experienced in the Red Cross.

Journal for the ten-volunteer hours with the American Red Cross

The first day in my new “job” began with a short orientation. First, I reported to the local office and asked for the person in charge of volunteers. I introduced myself to the designated volunteer supervisor, who was too accommodating to provide me with valuable information about volunteerism in the Red Cross. Ms. Claire, the supervisor, asked me to fill up a volunteer form. After that, she briefed me about the jobs of a volunteer.

The orientation took place at around nine o’clock in the morning on that peaceful and clear Monday. My request for ten volunteer hours was a short period, but she said that my time could be distributed into a week where I would be able to acquire knowledge and information about volunteerism and the various activities in the organization. We were ten new volunteers, whom Ms. Claire welcomed individually with a hug. She said that we would be given orientation and ‘tour’ and other special training for volunteers.

My first day of the week provided me a glimpse of what we would do as volunteers and what the Red Cross has done as an organization. My job was mostly on knowing what the Red Cross has done and can do in times of calamities and disasters. We could not do much as volunteers due to the short time allotted for us, but we could assist in the work being done in the office and orient ourselves in the staff’s various training.

On my second day, I was given a task that I believed was very fruitful in that short time of volunteer work. Ms. Claire asked me if I would like to assist with the babysitting activity, one of the training programs provided by the American Red Cross. My job was to assist the instructor in the training program, Ms. Smith, a retired nurse who has dedicated her life to volunteer work. Ms. Smith gave me a short orientation about babysitting. The training was a fruitful experience. I was allotted one-and-half hours for the training, but I extended it for another half an hour because I felt that the time was not enough. Babysitting is a very honorable and humane job. It trains us to become parents.

Write 2 pages with APA style on The ghosts of Rwanda.

. Teacher The ghosts of Rwanda The film The ghosts of Rwanda is a gut wrenching documentary about the Rwandan genocide in 1995 particularly in the opening scene where dead bodies were shown to illustrate the magnitude of the conflict. The documentary was able to catch the human misery and drama during the Rwandan genocide in the mise-en-scene introduction of the film that told the extent of the violence waged by the Hutus and Tutsis against each other. It was so revolting that the Rwandan genocide is recorded in history as one of the most brutal genocide and also cited the indifference of the world as it just stood by and let the whole atrocity happen.

The story was told both by the victims and the perpetrators as well as the third parties who were supposed to stop the genocide but did not do enough. The details of the horror of the genocide was encapsulated in the scene when a Tutsi woman who appealed to the Belgian journalists to take her and her companion with them to escape the attack of the Hutus. The shame of not doing enough when something could have been done was also encapsulated by an American diplomat who said that it was America’s bad taste not to do enough when people were being massacred. General Romeo Dallaire Commander of the UN Peacekeeping Mission also regretted that 800,000 people died in the genocide that he cannot find solace with the statement that he tried his best. Kofi Anan, the UN Secretary General during that time was also one of the resource person for the interview but his reaction portrayed the indecisiveness of the UN as he advised General Dallaire not to engage when it was already apparent that the Hutus are bent on sabotaging the peace process. He even advised to share intelligence with the Hutu dominated government who was bent on ending the peace process.

The information and probably the lasting impact that the film left to its audience is how ugly and atrocious genocide and extremism is. The killing spree used not only guns but also machetes that spared no one including the Prime Minister. It was so barbaric that the Rwandan genocide in 1995 will probably go down in history as one of the most revolting civil war in mankind’s history. The films that ethnic hatred, when go unchecked can go on a killing spree killing even the highest official in the land (Rwandan President’s plane was shot by a missile and the Prime Minister attacked in her home despite UN security forces). And probably, one of the information given by the film that is as revolting as genocide is the racism exercised by the Belgian forces during the height of the genocide. When the Hutu militia broke loose in killing everyone, it was only western people who are white skinned that was evacuated by the Belgian military. They were under orders not to evacuate ordinary Rwandans no matter how they pleaded for their life that an American diplomat had to say that this left a bad taste in their policy because thousands were killed.

Until now, the Rwanda Genocide in 1995 is always cited when the brutality of genocide is discussed. It goes down in infamy for its brutality, particularly in making machetes famous in hacking people to death and the sickening thought that the whole world just watched and did not do enough to stop the genocide.

write an article on learning as a lifetime experience Paper must be at least 1250 words.

Throughout my life, I continue to encounter numerous experiences, which significantly affect my perception and understanding of the occurrences in life. Through these experiences, I have learned numerous things that have enriched my life immensely. Though some occurred subconsciously, others were instigated discussions held between myself and friends.

While discussing various lifetime experiences with my friends, something I had always ignored occurred. My friend informed me of the inherent discrepancies present between environments where people grow up. The friend informed me of how he grew in a Muslim dominated society, and the difficult experiences he underwent as a Christian. With a majority of the people being Muslims, the childhood friends failed to understand the faith professed by my friend. The discrepancies in the fundamental teachings of the faiths caused numerous difficulties between the children professing different faiths. The children viewed each other as enemies creating immense tension and difficulty in creating friendships among children professing different faiths. After growing up, my friend’s understanding of the Islamic faith enabled him to appreciate individuals professing the faith.

My friend explained the various elements of the Islamic faith which caused the perception change. The discovery that a majority of the doctrines contained in the religions remain common across the religions was surprising. Through the explanation offered, I also gained an immense understanding of the Islamic religion. Although numerous accusations continue regarding the association of the Islamic faith with terrorism, stereotyping could be explained as the causing element for these accusations. The fact that there are quite many terrorists associated with the Islamic faith should not be a benchmark for all Muslims, terrorists. Stereotypical thinking with a limited understanding of Islamic faith leads to fallacious conclusions regarding religion.

As a child, I had also held this populist belief as true. My understanding of the Islamic religious doctrines displayed the religion as modeling terrorist.

Compose a 2750 words assignment on measuring tensile properties of metal specimens

The outcome of the tensile tests confirmed that the Steel 1018 was stronger than the Aluminum 6061-T6, Aluminum 2024-T4, and also Steel A36. Steel 1018 had the average maximum ultimate tensile strength and Steel had the average maximum ultimate tensile strength, they both had a greater modulus of toughness, had larger true fracture strength, and had a higher yield than the Aluminum 2024-T4 and also Aluminum 6061-T6. This proves that Steel 1018 and Steel 36 are more ductile because of their percent reduction in the area ranging to 50.50% and a percent elongation ranging to 17.6% compared to Aluminum2024-T4 and Aluminum 6061-T6.

Steel is stiffer meaning it deforms less for a given load but it is also more ductile because it deforms more than aluminum prior to final rupture. Therefore, it is an ideal choice for engineers. However, aluminum is lighter and less susceptible to corrosion.

For the selection of engineering materials, standard tensile testing parameters are useful. It helps in the choice of the majority of suitable materials for many projects and to develop new techniques to alter the material’s properties so that it can be customized and the material can be used for the particular application.

The purpose of this experiment is to determine the tensile strength of Steel 1018, A36 Steel, 2024-T4 Aluminum, and Aluminum 6061-T6 using the Tinius-Olsen machine and data acquisition software. Also, the strength and several elastic and inelastic properties of the stated metal specimens are measured and compared.&nbsp.Finally, a comparison of the recorded values of each property of the metal specimens with the values reported in the literature and observing and comparing the variations in the performance of materials in load.

To achieve the objectives, 16 metal specimens – 4 specimens each of A36 steel, 1018 steel, 6061-T6 aluminum, and 2024-T4 aluminum were tested in uniaxial tension to failure.&nbsp. Load and strain data from the tests were used to determine the material properties of the specimen and results were compared among specimens and to reference values.

Final Paper Case Study

Knarles and Barkley are father and son respectively. Barkley is 17 years old. They operate a facilities maintenance company that regularly does business in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The company is based in Maryland. They have a number of contracts with building owners where they have agreed to provide building maintenance to both residential and commercial buildings within the three jurisdictions already mentioned. They receive a monthly payment of $2,000 to $4,000 depending upon the size of the building. They bill the owners for any equipment of a substantial nature that has to be replaced. Because of Knarles’s long-term relationships with building owners, these contracts that were once in writing are generally renewed without a new written agreement. Often Knarles and Barkley will replace outdated and broken equipment such as water heaters and boilers that are part of a building’s heating system. Further, as part of maintenance, they regularly wash windows, remove snow, and do touch-up painting as required.
Knarles and Barkley have four full-time employees. One of the employees is a licensed plumber in the District of Columbia. His yearly license renewal is paid by the firm as part of an employment agreement that was negotiated four years ago. That agreement was in writing and was for a period of two years. It was the second such agreement entered into between said employee and Knarles and Barkley. The license, through inadvertence on the part of Barkley, was not renewed this year. In the past Knarles had taken care of this, but he had assigned this duty to his son so he might gain experience in what was involved in the license renewal process.

While Knarles is away in Hawaii at a “green facilities maintenance trade show,” Barkley is approached by a building owner, Ian Chetum, in northern Virginia who has heard of their excellent reputation. Barkley sends Chetum a standard agreement signed by Barkley. Chetum signs it and returns it to Barkley with a check for the first month.

Chetum has an immediate need for the services of Knarles and Barkley as it is the middle of February and his building is without heat. Barkley sends the plumber and another worker to Chetum’s building. While inspecting the nonoperating boiler at Chetum’s building, the plumber notices that the boiler is one that has been recalled by the manufacturer, Housewarm, because of a defect that does not allow all the carbon monoxide produced by the boiler to vent properly. This boiler was purchased by Chetum at a salvage yard and replaced another nonoperating boiler. Further, the boiler has been improperly installed, according to the plumber. The plumber notifies Barkley of the problems with the boiler and Barkley immediately notifies Chetum. Chetum tells Barkley that he does not want to purchase a new boiler. He asks if the existing boiler can be fixed to get through the winter months. Barkley calls his plumber who is still at the Chetum site and asks the plumber about a quick fix for the winter. The plumber tells Barkley he would not recommend the quick fix for the winter as this boiler is defective and has been recalled. He also tells Barkley, “You’re the boss and I can get it to work if you really want me to.” Barkley replies, “I don’t want you to fix it, the client does. He is the customer and this business has been built on customer service.” Barkley calls Chetum again and relays what his man on the site has said. Chetum replies, “Fix it.”

Knarles returns from his conference shortly after the fix on the boiler has taken place. He reads in the Washington Post on the first morning after his return that a number of residents in a building in northern Virginia had become sickened and admitted to the hospital for observation. It appeared that they were suffering from the effects of exposure to carbon monoxide. These people all lived in the Chetum building. While at lunch that day in a restaurant with his son and other members of the building maintenance community, he tells them about what he read in the Washington Post and says, “Thank God we don’t deal with that jerk Chetum. He is the shadiest operator in this region and would shoot his mother for a buck. What a crook!” One of the people at lunch, Joe Stucko, says, “I agree with you. Chetum stole my plans for converting old HVAC systems to new ones. I should sue him for stealing my ideas.”

Knarles later learns from his son of the agreement that he entered into with Chetum on behalf of the firm. Knarles calls Chetum and tells him he wants no part of the agreement and tells him he will messenger a check over to his office minus the charge for the work already completed by the plumber. Chetum sues for breach of contract.

What legal issues are raised by this case? Please be creative in your thinking. Remember that the issues that can be addressed deal with jurisdiction, torts and crimes, contract formation, remedies, sales. Address these issues in paragraph form, calling on what you have studied in the textbook and any outside sources. Be sure to cite your sources.

Describe how you think the research in the article is useful (e.g., what population is it helping? What problem is it solving?). Using Y=f(X) +E notation, identify the independent and dependent variables.

All models are wrong. Some models are useful.
—George E. P. Box (1919–2013)
Statistician

Describing and explaining social phenomena is a complex task. Box’s quote speaks to the point that it is a near impossible undertaking to fully explain such systems—physical or social—using a set of models. Yet even though these models contain some error, the models nevertheless assist with illuminating how the world works and advancing social change.

The competent quantitative researcher understands the balance between making statements related to theoretical understanding of relationships and recognizing that our social systems are of such complexity that we will always have some error. The key, for the rigorous researcher, is recognizing and mitigating the error as much as possible.

As a graduate student and consumer of research, you must recognize the error that might be present within your research and the research of others.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Use the Walden Library Course Guide and Assignment Help found in this week’s Learning Resources to search for and select a quantitative article that interests you and that has social change implications.
  • As you read the article, reflect on George Box’s quote in the introduction for this Discussion.
  • For additional support, review the Skill Builder: Independent and Dependent Variables, which you can find by navigating back to your Blackboard Course Home Page. From there, locate the Skill Builder link in the left navigation pane.

By Day 3

Post a very brief description (1–3 sentences) of the article you found and address the following:

  1. Describe how you think the research in the article is useful (e.g., what population is it helping? What problem is it solving?).
  2. Using Y=f(X) +E notation, identify the independent and dependent variables.
  3. How might the research models presented be wrong? What types of error might be present in the reported research?

Be sure to support your Main Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

By Day 5

Remembering that all research has some error, respond to at least one colleague’s post and comment on how we as social change agents and critical consumers of research can balance the usefulness with the error in the research. Do we throw the research out because of too much error, or is there something useful that it can tell us?
