Course Project: Quality Analysis II

FOR katetutor

For the company and product or service that you chose 2 weeks ago in Quality Analysis I (Nike Company) respond to the following in a 3-page Microsoft Word document:

  • Imagining yourself to be the customer, construct a House of Quality to provide the organization with your perspectives on what the important dimensions of quality are and how well the organization is currently meeting your needs.
  • Develop a SPC checklist for each dimension of the product that you believe would be subject to statistical control.
  • Evaluate the product using the five-step plan that is associated with the Kaizen philosophy.
  • Determine what elements of the production and delivery of the product or service would be subject to benchmarking and describe how you would identify those organizations to which comparisons could be made in a benchmarking process.

Support your responses with examples.

Cite any sources in APA format.

In Part 1(2.1) of your Justification Report assignment, you built up the following sections: Problem Statement,

Overview of Alternatives, Criteria, and Methods. In Part 2, you will revise Part 1 based on your instructor’s

suggestions and add to it the following sections:  Evaluation of Alternatives, Findings and Analysis, and

References.

Use the basic outline below to draft your paper. Organize your responses to each question under the

following section headings:

ï‚·  Evaluation of Alternatives (for Questions 1-3)

ï‚·  Findings and Analysis (for Questions 4-5)

ï‚·  References (for Question 6)

Write a two (2) page, single-spaced report in which you:

1.  Research the two (2) alternatives (i.e. possible solutions) that you’ve identified in your  Part 1

Evaluation of Alternatives section. Record bibliographic information during research.

a.  Example: You might research other organizations that have attempted similar solutions to

the problem you have identified and explore the results of those experiments.

2.  Use what you discover in your research to evaluate each alternative by each of your five (5)

criteria.

a.  Example: If your research revealed that four companies similar to yours increased

productivity after allowing their workers to telework from home three days per week, you

might conclude that one of your suggested alternatives – in this case, the option to

telework from home three days per week – satisfies one of your criterion of “Productivity”

as a high-potential solution to a problem you’ve identified (of decreased worker morale

and productivity at Doe’s Electronics). However, additional research might frustrate a

recommendation of this alternative if it is found to fall short of other criteria while a

second alternative fares better. For instance, a telework alternative might be found to be

too costly to implement; too frustrating for consumers who prefer daily, in-person

customer service; or too divergent from the company’s brand, “Always there for you!”

3.  Organize the assignment by your criteria. Explain in narrative form how each of your two (2)

alternatives stacks up against your first criterion. Next, explain how each alternative stacks up

against your second criterion, etc.

a.  Example: An abbreviated outline of what this longer section might look like based on the

above example is below (Note: Only the first two [2] of five [5] required criteria are

included to give you a feel for the structure). Your researched findings , represented as

circled bullets below, should be explained in two to five (2-5) sentences. Include in-text

citations and follow up with References in APA style):

Evaluation of Alternatives

o  Productivity

  Alternative A: Telework from home 3 days per week

ï‚·  {narrate findings based on research article 1 here}

  Alternative B: Offer two extra Floating Holidays to each employee per

year

ï‚·  {narrate findings based on research article 2 here}

Cost

  Alternative A: Telework from home 3 days per week

ï‚·  {narrate findings based on research article 1 here}

  Alternative B: Offer two extra Floating Holidays to each employee per

year

ï‚·  {narrate findings based on research article 2 here}

4.  Briefly summarize in narrative form the major discoveries that emerged from the Evaluation of

Alternatives section.

5.  Include a chart like the ones below to illustrate at a glance:

Figure 1: Alternatives Analyzed by Criteria

Criteria  Telework Option  Floating Holiday Option

Productivity  Very high  Negligible increase

Cost  Very high   Moderate

Company Image  Increased  Negligible increase

Worker Morale  Increased  Negligible increase

Practicality  Moderate  Low

TOTAL Feasibility* of

Alternatives based on

Criteria?

Moderate to High  Low to Moderate

*Feasibility = Capability of an alternative being carried out with success

6.  Includes an APA style (6th edition) References page that documents the two  (2) sources

(minimum) that you used and cited in-text in your Evaluation of Alternatives section. Note that

both resources may be secondary resources, or you may include one primary source and one

secondary source. Remember that both in-text citations and References must be included (to

avoid plagiarism) whenever you are directly quoting, summarizing, or paraphrasing researched

material.

Your assignment must:

ï‚·  Be typed, single spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all

sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your

professor for any additional instructions.

ï‚·  Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, the professor’s name, the

course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required

assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

ï‚·  Support ideas or claims in body paragraphs with clear details, examples, and explanations.

ï‚·  Organize ideas logically by using transitional words, phrases, and sentences.

ï‚·  Use sentence variety and effective word choice in written communication.

ï‚·  Apply writing process strategies to develop formal business reports and / or proposals.

ï‚·  Use technology and information resources to research issues related to selected topics.

ï‚·  Write clearly and concisely using proper writing mechanics.

BUS508 Week 2 Scenario

Microeconomics: The Forces of Demand and Supply; Macroeconomics: Issues for the Entire Economy; Evaluating Economic Performance; and Going Global

Slide #

Narration

Slide 1

Tammy:  Welcome to Contemporary Business.

This week I will be meeting with Vicky Simpson, Corporate Vice President of Walters Aeroworks, regarding the organization’s current corporate strategic position in the marketplace, and the need to make decisions regarding the company’s future.

Let’s go visit Vicky and see how we can help!

Slide 2

Tammy:  Good morning, Vicky!  Thank you for taking the time to speak with me this afternoon regarding the strategic position of the company.  I know this is a crucial time in the company’s history, and I appreciate that you will share with us your perspective on the company’s future.

Vicky: Tammy, I am glad that you have stopped by so that I can give you the information you are seeking about our company.

Tammy:  Vicky, can you give me an idea of what you envision Walters Aeroworks to be in the future?

Vicky:  I certainly can!  Let’s look at it from two different perspectives, the microeconomic view and the macroeconomic view.

Slide 3

Vicky: From the microeconomic view, we are concerned about small economic units, such as individual consumers, families and businesses, and how and what we do as a company impacts those units. In other words, we are concerned about consumer behavior!

The forces of supply and demand determine what each economic unit needs.

Vicky:  Supply is concerned with the willingness and ability of sellers to provide goods and services, while demand is the willingness and ability of buyers to purchase goods and services.  The interaction of these two factors is shown on the sample supply and demand curve shown here.

The demand curve is the part of graph that shows the amount of a product that buyers will purchase at different prices, while the supply curve shows the relationship between different prices and the quantities that sellers will offer for sale, regardless of the demand.

When we have the interaction between the two curves, we have effects on prices and the availability of products. The intersection of the two curves is called the equilibrium price, which is the prevailing market price at which you can buy an item.  If the actual market price differs from the equilibrium price, buyers and sellers tend to make economic choices that restore the equilibrium level.

Slide 4

Tammy: So, how does this whole concept of supply and demand impact what Walters Aeroworks decides to manufacture and sell to its customers?

Vicky:  Great question, Tammy!  As you know, part of what we do is produce specialty parts of replica World War I and World War II airplanes.  These builders cannot just open up a parts catalog from a company like Cessna or Piper and find the part that they need to complete the build of their planes. Instead, they need custom parts that are expensive to produce in a quantity of one or two at a time. These parts are also required to meet very exacting standards so that they can receive the airworthiness certificates required for their planes to fly. That is where we can assist them in what they need.

Tammy:  Is that why Cliff Walters started this company in the first place?

Vicky: Exactly!

Since we can help many different builders of the same type of aircraft, we can use our state of the art technology to manufacture the parts of the highest quality at an affordable price that these builders would not be able to build themselves.

Tammy: That makes perfect sense. That’s a solution that really sets a company apart from anybody else.

Vicky: Very true! We, however, do not have a large stockpiles of these parts, because there are a limited number of builders of these replica aircraft. Due to this, we have to produce the parts on a “just in time” basis, so that we can keep a stockpiles of raw materials, but only make the finished products when they are actually ordered.  Our prices do not change drastically over time, unless our suppliers decide to change their prices, but we buy enough of the raw materials to get bulk quantity discounts to allow us to keep our prices reasonable.

Look at the process for filling a job vacancy varies greatly, but there is the requirement for information that must be gathered and used to define the position and match the right candidate to that requirement, which is essentially the same.

As the human resources professional, you are expected to work with the supervisor of the position being created to provide the technical competencies in candidate selection.

Research and address the following:

·         Discuss the sequence of activities that are involved in hiring an accounts payable clerk.

·         Explain the data that should be included in a job analysis of that position.

·         Describe how job analysis becomes a position description.

·         Describe how the human resources professional guides the selecting supervisor in applying good selection criteria to choose the best candidate.

Part 1 of the feasibility study requires you to identify the NAICS code of your proposed business concept. As mentioned in this week’s learning unit, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) provides not only a system to classify your business but also provides valuable industry information and data, which is an invaluable tool to a startup or existing business. In this discussion thread, you will practice using the NAICS site and discuss your findings with your classmates as presented in Skill Module 7.2 (Katz & Green, p. 190).

What is your NAICS code?  See Katz, p.190.  Please go to the updated site:

http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/naicsrch?chart=2012. In the text box that says “enter keyword” enter the name of the industry that best describes the industry in which your proposed business idea is located.  You should end up with a 6 digit code for the industry in which your business will be located.  If you are not sure of your industry, it may take some experimentation.  See examples in Skill module 7.2.

Once you locate your NAICS code, go to www.census.gov and click on “economic census.”  Once you are in “economic census” enter your NAICS code and look for data related to your industry.

Find and share at least three pieces of information about your industry that are available at this cite such as number of establishments, annual revenue, trends, etc.  Also refer to Table 7.1 on page 200 for additional information and ideas.

For your convenience, I am also attaching a table with the NAICS structure and numbers.

And respond to these two posts, can say anything/feedback:

1.

My instudusty falls under catagory “All Other Miscellaneous Store Retailers (except Tobacco Stores)” with the NAICS code 453998. The type of business that I will writing about its actaully the same instudusty that my own shop is in. I will be writing about a religous goods/ candle store. Something interesting that I learned is that many business may fall under more than one catagory but the one that you will be listed under by the U.S. Census Bureau assigns and maintains only one NAICS code for each establishment based on its primary activity (generally the activity that generates the most revenue for the establishment). I found this information interesting becaus I know many business that may fall under more than one code my store is a prime example!

Some pieces of importanion that I found was there are 17,270 establishments listed under this cataorgy in the United States in 2007. This number is actaully down 6.8% from 2002. The average number of employees per establisment is 5.1 and this number is up 5.0% from 2002. Also sales per establishment per $1000 is at 824 in 2007 and this number is up 28.0% from 2002.

2.

All,

The NAICS Code for my industry is 812111 which is barber shops. According to the U.S. Census Bureau. ” This U.S. Industry comprises establishments known as barber shops or men’s hair stylish shops primarily engaged in cutting, trimming, and styling boys’ and mens hair; and/or shaving and trimming men’s beards” (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012).

The first piece of information about my industry will be the number of establishments, which is 4,242 (Census Bureau, 1997). This piece of information lets me know that I have a lot of competition. The second piece of information, is that there are 13,341 paid employees (U.S. Census Bureau, 1997). This information lets me know that there is a high demand for employees. The third piece of information is the annual payroll, which is 194,254 (U.S. Census Bureau, 1997). This piece of information lets me know that not only will my employees make a significant amount of money, but I will as well.
