Proactive planning

You have just attended a manager’s meeting about establishing self-directed, high-performing teams. The company is concerned because some of the managers are having success building self-directed, high-performing teams while others are not. A discussion occurred that identified the characteristics of the successful team building elements and compared them to those managers that have not been successful. This is a situation where those who are struggling need to learn from those who are doing well. The discussions included identifying what could be going wrong and what steps might be taken for success.

You have been asked to write a research report that summarizes the meeting and offers some recommendations that might be helpful to those managers who are struggling. Specifically, your report must include:

  • Identification of the difficulties the managers may be having in establishing self-directed, high-performing teams
  • Identification of the successful characteristic of establishing self-directed, high-performing teams
  • Recommendations for success
  • A designed plan that might help guide the struggling managers and improve negotiation and conflict resolution skills

1.    Watch the video demonstrating the use of the Proquest database at http://www.nvcc.edu/depts/library_projects/examples/proquestsearchingr_demo.htm.
NOTE: The ProQuest link on the document is no longer active. There are ProQuest demos all over the internet, and you may search for you own.  ProQuest runs their own channel on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/user/proquestvideo
2.    Using Proquest and at least two other library databases at http://www.nvcc.edu/library/databases.htm, begin researching your topic. Use the search ideas from your group members and your own ideas.  Take notes about the content of useful articles (including their citations).

3.    Note the features of each database that you use. Think about what is the same as Proquest and what is different, such as the tabs for different ways of searching, the options you have once you choose a way of searching,  the ability to obtain specific types of sources, information on sidebars, search tips, etc.

4.    Identify at least one feature each for the two databases, other than the use of the simple search box, which would help you be more successful in your research.

5.    In the Using Databases class discussion, find the threads for the databases you reviewed and post a reply in each describing a useful feature you found.  Please be detailed as you describe the feature by using specific information such as where the feature is located in the database, if there are particular tabs to click or links to use. In this way others will be able to follow your directions.  Do not duplicate anyone else’s feature; if someone has already described the feature you were going to describe, describe another useful feature.

6.    Read the features described by your classmates.  They will help you do your research more effectively and efficiently.

How is Technology Changing the Face of Business Today?

Assignment 3: How is Technology Changing the Face of Business Today?

The traditional retail model has focused on finding high-margin, high-volume products or services because limited space means reduced space inventory. For example, organizations such as Walmart select the biggest hits from the broadest genres, called the “short head.” The short head means Walmart will only carry a select mix of country, pop, and rock that is calculated to provide the greatest cost/benefit. The business model of Amazon is different. Amazon provides the short head but also provides the “long tail” of more than 100,000 different audio selections. The competition for customers between the Walmart and Amazon marketplace is profoundly changing the face of retail business today.

Using the assigned reading and the Argosy University online library resources, find at least three scholarly articles that address similar current trends related to e-business and how e-business is changing the face of businesses today.

Using your company or a real-world example from your research, respond to the following:

  • Describe how technology is changing the face of businesses today.
  • Describe the most critical business processes that utilize information systems in your selected company.
  • Explain how IT makes the company’s business processes faster, cheaper, more accurate, and customer-savvy than that of competitors.
  • Cite at least three sources found in your online library research.

Give reasons and examples from your research to support your responses.

Write 3–5-page paper in Word format. Be sure to use and cite the module readings. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

In Unit 3 of the course, you completed your first draft of your essay. This week, you will work on revising your essay based on this peer-review Discussion Board and on your own, using feedback you received from your instructor.

Primary Discussion Response

Choose 1 of your body paragraphs from the first draft you completed in Unit 3 that needs additional development, organizational help, or other revisions.
In the discussion area, post the following:

  • Revise the paragraph you selected using a critical eye and what you have learned in intellipath.

  • List any questions you have about the paragraph or any areas you feel still need to be strengthened.

Peer Responses

In your responses to 2 classmates, remember to be constructive and polite when you offer feedback. It is best to be specific. Consider the following:

  1. Is there a clear topic sentence? Does it make a claim? In what way is this topic sentence effective? If the topic sentence is not as effective as it could be, what suggestions do you have to make it more clear or better focused?

  3. As you read the paragraph, identify any areas where the details seem out of order or illogical.
