The (y) coordinates will rise on the graph as the distance the person walks increases, while the (x) coordinates on the graph will stretch further horizontally to indicate the amount of time that it took the person to walk the distance, therefore showing the relationship between the two. This graph is useful because it makes a clear indication to how long it takes a person to walk a certain distance as well as allows future predictions to be made should the person have kept walking, as long as it is at a set interval. Another example of this would be. Imaging a line on a graph is approximately the amount of rain fall (y) that has fallen in a certain amount of minutes (x). The slope of the line represents how far a person has traveled and how long it has taken them to travel a certain distance. An example would be an athlete who is a distance runner and he wants to record his time and how long it has taken him to run a certain amount of miles. The slope would be the time it takes him to complete his run which would be the x intercept or the slope. The y intercept would be how far he has traveled and the miles he has run on that particular day. The slope would represent where the line intersects on the graph. This is a constant rate of change because the runner could run fast on one mile and slower on another miles. This would be useful in determining what times and how far he must run the next time to achieve his goals.

  1. GAAP rules are clear about when a company needs to consolidate or not, but companies tend to find loopholes to circumvent this rule. GAAP clearly indicates that consolidated financial statements are “usually necessary for a fair presentation when one of the companies in the group directly or indirectly has a controlling financial interest in other companies: the usual condition for a controlling financial interest is ownership of a majority voting interest.”

Controlling financial interest means to own more/greater than 50% of the voting stock of another company.

Because of this “greater than 50% of the voting stock,” some of the companies have taken advantage of the criterion, causing serious problems in the business world. Companies were destroyed and with it, employees lost their jobs, their pensions, and 401Ks. So FASB had to make changes to GAAP for consolidations and issued new guidelines.

Creative Colors (a fictitious company) sells art supplies through three retail stores in the State of Washington as well as online. In addition, the company offers classes in painting, sculpting, graphic design, and ceramics at its flagship store in Seattle. Over the past two years, the company has suffered from shrinking sales and declining revenues in retail stores; at the same time, inventory costs have been growing. Enrollment in arts classes has remained steady and strong. However, the classes are operated on a break-even basis, so their profitability depends in large part on the volume of supplies that students purchase from the retail or online operation after participating in a class. Online sales continue to grow 2% to 3% each year. 

The owner of Creative Colors must implement cost savings measures. She has decided to cut 25% of the company’s managerial positions and reorganize the remaining positions so that the organization still exercises adequate supervision and control over its employees. This will allow Creative Colors to refocus its efforts on expanding online sales while rebuilding its retail sales operation. The owner has hired you to give her advice about how to proceed. 

In a paper of at least 6 – 8 pages (excluding title and references pages), describe how you would go about analyzing the organizational hierarchy to make recommendations about which managerial positions should be cut.
